MySQL and charsets: latin1 vs. utf8
Hi, Our public library management software (PMB) is currently running on a Slackware Linux 12.0 server, with Apache, PHP, MySQL and a few PHP modules. I'm considering migrating it to CentOS 5.1, because it would be easier to maintain for updates, and for various other reasons. Slackware is one of the rare distros that does not default to an utf8 system locale. The default is en_US, and

Correctly displaying different charsets in Gnome-Terminal
Hi, I'm using CentOS 5.0 with GNOME on almost all my desktops. My system is in french, so the default charset ($LANG) is fr_FR.UTF-8. I'm in charge of our public library database server, running Debian Sarge. It's mainly running a LAMP server with a few extra PHP modules, and it's hosting our library management software. Since the app refuses to work correctly with UTF-8, I

CentOS 7 + KDE - default keyboard layout?
Hi, I'm currently fiddling with CentOS 7 and KDE 4.14, and I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised. This is one of the cleanest implementations of KDE I've ever seen, and with some tweaking (a lot, in fact) this can be turned into a highly functional desktop with all the bling and bells and whistles. But right now, I have some minor problems to solve. First things first. My system is

Reading in a table with ISO-latin1 encoding in MacOS-X (Intel)
Dear colleages in R, I have earlier been working with R in Linux, where reading in a table containing Scandinavian letters ("?", "?", and "?") in the header as part of variable names has not caused any problem whatsoever. However, when trying to do the same in R running on new MacOS-X (with an Intel processor) with the same original text table does not seem to

I am having difficult using konsole with the same scripts that I have used on FC4, FC5, and FC6 with success. I am executing this command from a Desktop link konsole --vt_sz 80x25 --profile smile with smile being

special latin1 do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows
Upon further inspection, I think these are at least two problems. First the issue with printing latin1/cp1252 characters in the "80" to "9F" code range. x <- c("?", "?", "?") Encoding(x) print(x) I assume that these are Unicode escapes!? (Given that Encoding(x) shows "latin1" I'd rather expect latin1/cp1252 escapes here, but

special latin1 do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows
Thank you!. My apologies again for not including the console output in my message before. I sent another e-mail with the output in the meantime, so it should be a bit clearer now, what I am seeing. In case I missed something, please let me know. Yes, I am using latin1 and cp1252 interchangebly here, mostly because Encoding() is reporting the encoding as "latin1". You presumed correctly

latin1,utf-8...encoding and data
Hello, I have some questions concerning encoding and package distribution. We develop the ade4 package. For some data sets included in the package, there are accentued character (e.g. ?,?...). The data sets have been saved using latin1 encoding, but some of us use utf-8 and can not see some data sets which contains accented chracters. e.g: librarry(ade4) data(rankrock) rankrock in this case,

GF114 [GeForce GTX 560 Ti] (rev a1) slow and flickering display
I recently replaced a 8600 GT with the above card on openSUSE Tumbleweed x86_64. The screen now flickers and when I change desktops it takes a some 10 to 15 seconds to display the new windows. e.g if I change from desktop 1 (konsole) to desktop 8 (thunderbird) it switches but konsole is displayed for 10 to 15 seconds before thunderbird appears. Occasionally the screen flickers wildly before

xfce in CentOS 5.1 "extras" repository
Hi, I am using CentOS 5.1 x86 (upgraded from 5.0), and am still using XFCE 4.4.1 from 5.0 "extras" repository. Just saw in XFCE site that they released 4.4.2. Any chance to see it in 5.1 "extras" repository?

Back to Xfce
Now that the basic server is up and running.? With Gnome via VNC (yuck), it is time to go back and figure out howto install Xfce without an Xfce group script.? So I am asking those with X64 Centos for some pointers.? Like where are the group scripts so maybe I can modify them for armhfp. I was reading: https://www.rootusers.com/how-to-install-xfce-gui-in-centos-7-linux/ Where the author

C7 Xfce group
I am working with Centos-arm which right now only has the gnome and kde desktops. I am spoiled with using Xfce on all my Fedora systems (MUCH longer battery life on my notebook, for example).? I like its simplicity. I see from messages here that mainline C7 does have the Xfce desktop. Can someone give me a list of rpms that make up the group, so I can try starting with the minimal image and

special latin1 do not print as glyphs in current devel on windows
This is a follow-up on my initial posts regarding character encodings on Windows (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2017-August/074728.html) and Patrick Perry's reply (https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-devel/2017-August/074830.html) in particular (thank you for the links and the bug report!). My initial posts were quite chaotic (and partly wrong), so I am trying to clear things up a

Installing xfce on CentOS 5.3?
I would like to install xfce from the "extras" repo - but when I run: yum groupinstall XFCE-4.4 I get: Warning: Group XFCE-4.4 does not exist. Also 'yum grouplist' appears to only show the base groups ... Is there anything else I have to do to install xfce? Thanks James Pearson
