Question on failing hard drives
In my Cent OS machine, I have 3 hard drives, an 80, and two 200gig hard drives. One of the drives is obviously starting to fail, but I'm not sure which one. Is there a command line command in Linux that will check the drive integrity on all the hard drives and tell me which one is going bad? Thanks Jim

Prolonged transfers turn hard drive into read-only.
Good day, I'm hoping someone can provide me with some direction to get a samba (possibly) issue fixed. After large/long transfers, usually couple hundred megs +, the disc I'm transferring the files turns into a read-only drive. I have to unmount and remount the drive for it to be writable again. I'm not a linux expert so I'm sure I didn't setup everything optimally.

Duplicating Hard Drive Problem
Hello All: My research group recently invested in a 17 node Linux rackmounted cluster. It was delivered recently and, being the lowly graduate student that I am, I was told to 'make sure that it works.' After investigating it, I noticed a problem with two of the hard drives one nodes 14 and 16. On most of the nodes, a 'df -hT' will give you the following: Filesystem Type Size

Replacing a hard drive
I have a CentOS 4.4 system where all of the main filesystems are on a single hard drive. This drive is starting to give some errors, so I got a new (larger) drive to replace it with. What is the easiest way to copy my filesystems over to the new drive? I considered using dd, but I lose the extra capacity of the new drive that way. I tried using SystemImager, but it is giving me some errors. I

Syslinux / Hard drive booting
Hello, We have been using syslinux to boot machines successfully for quite a while. However, we now have a model of machine that just doesnt seem to work. We are currently using syslinux/pxelinux 2.05 but have tried 2.03 as well Here is the procedure we normally use. This is typically fully unattended. We boot a small linux distro using pxelinux. Then we copy in mbr.bin from the syslinux

Un Installing a hard drive in a Centos 5.1 box
Hi Guys, I'm fairly new to Linux and I'm trying to un install a hard drive from my Centos 5.1 box running KDE. When I built the PC, I installed two 500 gig maxtors in the tower, then I installed Centos. Now I've decided that I want to remove the slave drive and use it as an external backup drive - I am mounting it into one of those external drive cases with a built in fan. When I

hard drive failing in linux raid

Now primary master hard drive is displaying a lot of SMART errors so I would like to remove it and replace with another drive....different brand but same size. Partitions are /dev/md0 till /dev/md5. flac metadata
So I've just ripped my entire 600 CD collection to flac format (200gigs worth) with vorbis comments in the flac metadata. But my gripe is that neither Winamp nor XMMS's flac plug-ins seem to have the ability to read the vorbis comment from the metadata. Are there any flac players for windoze or linux that can access the metadata? Or do i have to add redundant ID3 tags to all my flac

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives

If you tried to *move* it it's an archive, not a backup. If you tried to *copy* it, with the intent of keeping the original on the original hard disk and using it

Adding Nested Partitions To A Mount Point
I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it is possible to mount a drive (single partition) to a nested directory on an existing Samba mount point and have the entire structure considered one drive? The situation is this. I have a large drive mounted to a share called "/pub". This has been identified as my Samba mount point and all works as it should. What I would like to do is

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Dear Steve, Very valuable info. Appreciate it and will be careful when using terms. Actually I think I should just use rsync without compressing. The reason why I started compressing was because the GUI gave some errors when I was trying to copy then files. I'll just rsync the data from my laptop HDD to my external drive(without compressing) Thanks Kevin On Sunday, August 9, 2015, Steve

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Hi, talking of rsync and compression is may be also a bit misleading. On the destination there will be no compressed files if you transfer with rsync! The transfere on the network by rsync might be compressed! /G?tz Am 09.08.15 um 18:33 schrieb Kevin Laurie: > Dear Steve, > Very valuable info. How to upgrade hard drive in a single drive (with LVM2) computer
This one has me stumped and I'm sure I must be missing something trivial. What is is eludes me. I have a 20G drive that will be replaced with a 160G drive. The /boot partition is just a standard type 83, and the swap is an 82. The system root partition is in a LV, as is the /home partition. I've upgraded hard drives dozens of times without incident, but never ona system with LVM.

backing up email / saving maildir on external hard drives
Hello, Yesterday I tried to back up a 40GB maildir . I tried to move the maildir from home to external HDD but failed. Decided then to compress it(which took several hours). Now changing the disk format from FAT to exFAT to allow the transfer for the large compressed file. How does one back up emails on a external drive? Some advice would be greatly appreciated.

Audio File Conversion: Extract CDDA from Music CD and Save as MP3 on Hard Drive
I'm using CentOS 4.4. It looks like I can use Sound Juicer (I normally use GNOME) or KAudio Creator in KDE to do this. I've been looking for gstreamer-plugins-mp3 with the Lame MP3 codec, but the files I find quickly are for early versions of Fedora Core. If someone can give me a URL for a version that will work on CentOS 4.4, that will be greatly appreciated. Or, another Application that

acessing hard drive continuously
My hard drive on a Dell Latitude keeps being accessed every 5 seconds for a couple tenths of a second. Is there a way yo shut this off. I suspect it might be related to journaling? Thanks in advance. -- David I. Sommers, Ph.D. Kensington, MD
