Overview of Ruby 1.9 encoding problem tickets
SUMMARY: -------- I tried to identify the general and root causes for these problems with 1.9, by taking into account non-utf encoding, current patches, comments and ideas. I used ticket #2188 as base for explanations. This is a long read. I wanted to include all the relevant information in one place. I also included information about related tickets in LH and their status. I decided that adding

WWW::Mechanize::Link.inspect needs some TLC
The problem: users trying to debug Mechanize apps with Komodo are finding the debugger times out once it''s loaded a web page. They don''t run into this in the ruby-debug debugger, or running in normal mode. The reason: Komodo''s debugger is graphical, which means that whenever it hits a breakpoint it automatically shows the contents of each local variable. It has a

Reading JPEG file, converting to HEX
Colleagues, I am using R to assemble RTF documents (which are plain text). I need to embed a JPEG graphic that was created with R. I presume that the steps need to be: a. read the file into R b. convert the object to HEX format c. write the converted object to a textfile. If I read the file into R using readLines, I get the following (only the first 5 lines shown): > >

Can not create model instance via params on specific model but can on others....
Anyone have an idea on this? Got a weird situation where on a specific model I can not create an instance using params, yet it works fine on other models. The model which does not work is a stock model, there is no logic in it. Ruby 1.8.7/Rails 3.0.5. Does not work: (rdb:1) PaymentTransaction.create(:purchase_id => 3) #<PaymentTransaction id: 2, purchase_id: nil, action: nil, amount: nil,

win32-security, 1.9.x, encoding issue?
Hi, Windows Vista Home Premium ruby 1.9.2dev (2009-07-18 trunk 24186) [i386-mswin32_90] I noticed there was an ordinal bug in win32-security and Ruby 1.9.x. I fixed those easily enough, but now we''re left with this: 1) Error: test_string_to_sid(TC_Win32_Security_Sid): ArgumentError: invalid byte sequence in US-ASCII

Computing very large exponents
Greetings all. Does anyone have a clue how to use Ruby to do modular exponentiation using the binary left-to-right method? I looked through the documentation and searched the forums and found the String.each_byte method. However I had no luck finding anything showing how one might manipulate bits of bytes. Below is an example of what I am talking about. The calculation a = b^e mod n (or

Problem compiling R-Patched
I downloaded R-Patched today (to see if another problem I want to ask about is still present or if its just me - as per the posting guide). I ran "tools/rsync-recommended" successfully. I then ran "configure --enable-R-shlib" successfully. Then make stops with the following error. gcc -shared -L/usr/local/lib -o tools.so text.o init.o Rmd5.o md5.o -L../../../../lib -lR

attaching the debugger to functional test.
People, I''m trying to run the ruby debugger against a Test::Unit::TestCase class which is a parent of a Rails class. I started my study with a simple script: # # bikle_test.rb # require ''test/unit'' class BikleTest < Test::Unit::TestCase def setup @string10 = "hello" end def test10 assert_equal @string10, "hello" end end The

removing Mocha; 'spec spec' fails but the specific model file passes
I happened to mix ryan bates'' authentication scaffold with rspec_scaffold on a demo project. and ran into the problem of mixing mock frameworks...ryan uses mocha. So, as a learning experience, I choose to redo ryan''s tests without mocha but ran into a strange problem with tests of the User model. With debugging you can see.... If you run just the user_spec.rb file, everything

Design library installation problem
Dear Listers I have tried to install Frank Harrell's two libaries: Hmisc and Design. I found that Hmisc was listed in the list of packages from the Install Packages command on the Packages menu, but Design was not. I installed Hmisc from this list, and when I issued the library(Hmisc) command, it loaded into memory correctly. I then copied the Design 1.1-1.zip file from the

executing from .R source file in the src package
Can I run R code straight from R src (.R) file instead of .rdb/.rdx? I of course tried simply unzipping tar.gz in the R_LIBS directory but R complains with "not a valid installed package". Real issue: I am very new to R and all, so this could be something basic. I'm trying to use ess-tracebug (Emacs front-end to trace/browser et al). It works great when I trace functions in .R

opening RDB files
Hi all, I've recently upgraded to R version 2.1.1 and when trying to inspect the contents of many packages in the library (for instance library\MASS\R) I've realized wordpad, or the notepad, won't open them since they have *.RDB and *.RDX extensions which these editors cannot recognize. However, libraries in previous versions of R did not have these extensions and I could inspect

Convert "RDX" and "RDB" to ASCII format?
Dear R users and experts, I need to modify an exisiting R function from a package. The function/ variable is inside a namespace and I have problems accessing it. I only need to get access to to corresponding sourcecode. I localised the "RDX" and "RDB" files. But it seems to be a binary format. How can I convert it to an ASCII format to open and extract the code from a text
