Need advice on controller / view
Need some advice. I''ve got two modules: artists and paintings.
In my home page, I''ve got a 2nd page that says "Browse paintings",
which displays ALL paintings of ALL artists. This is being rendered by
paintings#index.
In another page, I should show all paintings of a specific artist
ONLY. Meaning, paintings from ONE artist. I cant use paintings#index
for this anymore

STI and :through, not working?
Artist.first.medias returns all medias. Media is an STI. Media can be
video or painting.
How do I return all paintings of an artist? Only paintings, not
videos?
In my Artist model, I tried putting:
has_many :paintings, :through => :medias
In console, I do:
Artist.first.paintings.all
And I get:

2.3 Nested Model Forms; build new without updating existing
I''m trying to build something similar to a Facebook messaging app, in
which the view displays all the messages for a particular thread, with
a form box for replying at the bottom of the thread.
The problem is that using fields_for generates form fields for each
existing record, and for one new record. In this case, there is no
need to edit existing messages - just a need to add new

How to access virtual attributes in the model
I''ve got an artist form. In this form I''ve got attributes that do not
exist in the model that the form belongs to. However, I would like to
submit these values for later processing.
My virtual attributes in the form are:
<%= f.label :foobar %>
<%= f.text_field :foobar %>
In the artist model, I created a getter:
def foobar

Getting the object in fields_for
I''m using the fields_for helper with accepts_nested_attributes_for
The System model has_many children.
If I do this in my haml template:
-form_for @system do |s|
=s.text_field :name
-s.fields_for :children do |child_fields|
=child_fields.text_field :name
all is fine. The fields_for iterates over all children and puts the
correct data in the fields.
But...what I

Rails 3 / ActiveModel for Credit Card information?
When submitting billing information in the past I''ve always used
attr_accessor for credit card details as they should not be saved in
the database. In addition I always end up storing the card
expiration date so that the date form helper works correctly.
With Active Model it seems logical to create a CreditCard class to
hold this data instead.
**1st issue.**
It seems there still

fields_for weirdness
I just did a large upgrade to to Rails 2.3.4 and I am trying to make
use of the more modern view features.
I have a Newsletter object. Newsletter has many Sections.
I also have:
accepts_nested_attributes_for :sections
on the Newsletter object.
I have the typical scaffolded new.html.erb with:
<% form_for(@newsletter) do |f| %>
in there, I am trying to populate the first Section

How to manage the form of a model that has two foreign keys
Hi,
Basically I have two models: User and Godfather. The godfather table
has three columns:
- user_id (FK --> User)
- user_godfather_id (FK --> User)
- description (text)
Inside each model class, I am adding the following associations:
class User < ActiveRecord::Base

Nested forms validation problem
Hi All,
I''m trying to learn Ruby on Rails and have got an issue with the
validation of a nested form. I think I have got it setup correctly as it
appears to be saving the data as expected, but it is not wrapping the
CSS class (field_with_errors) to the fields, and if data is entered into
the nested fields it disappears on form submit (if there are validation
errors). The validation

Pre-populating association
Hello,
I think this is an easy one for the average Rails developer but I''m a bit stuck.
I''m creating a simple voting app: any user can create a survey, with any number of questions, and other users can then vote by creating a ballot for that survey.
Here''s the modeling:
class Survey < ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :questions
has_many :eligibilities

OpenSSL
Hello anyone used OpenSSL before?
Why do we need to pay for expensive SSL certs when there is OpenSSL
which is provided free? Is there a difference?
I''ve got an ecommerce website, and wondering if OpenSSL is enough?
Your thoughts will be appreciated

Nested objects not propagating from view
I thought I had this fixed, but apparently not. It works okay from the
console, but not from the view. I have the following:
# partial schema
create_table "users", :force => true do |t|
t.string "login", :null => false
t.string "first_name"
t.string "last_name"
t.string "email", :null => false
