SATA DVD Burner / AHCI / CentOS 4.7 (kernel: 2.6.9-78.0.22.EL)
OK, it seems that the kernel I have (stock CentOS 4.7: 2.6.9-78.0.22.EL i686) seems to gronk the nVideo SATA controller in AHCI mode. It is NOT able to deal with the SATA DVD Burner I have. It is a "Sony Optiarc DVD Burner with LightScribe Black SATA Model AD-7241S-0B LightScribe Support". Is there some special magic I need to do? Here is the relevant bit from the boot up (SATA ports

RocketRAID cards (actually, solved)
If anyone's got old RocketRAID cards, I just had to deal with one. They are years behind in updating their drivers - googling, I find the last time some were supported was CentOS 5.2. At any rate, I have just managed to build 1.8 of rr232x successfully, and am building filesystems on the drive as I type. I d/l the compressed tarballs from HighPoint's site. The changes to make it compile

Xen 4.1.1 HVM guest cdrom trouble, lost interrupts, ata failed commands (frozen)
Hello, I was testing Fedora 16 (rc2) Xen host, with included Xen 4.1.1 rpms and Linux 3.1.0 dom0 kernel. Fedora 16 PV domUs seem to work nicely. I noticed a problem with Fedora 16 Xen HVM guests though. The F16 guest kernel (Linux 3.1.0) fails with the qemu-dm emulated DVD-ROM drive.. Full HVM guest kernel dmesg attached to this email. See the end of this email for Xen cfgfile for the

Compiling kernel/drivers for hw RocketRaid 1640
I picked up a RocketRaid 1640 card b/c it had support for "RedHat". Apparently, their version of "RedHat" is "stable"(9), which I pointed out was "dead" for all security purposes... (at least, that was what I understood from someone in one of the RH/clone IRC channels.) It turns out that I need to build a new driver from their open source code. This

Third-party SATA-RAID cards suggestions
Hi all, Would anybody care to suggest a third party SATA-RAID card that works out of the box with CentOS 6, without having to jump through hoops to make it work? The card should preferably be able to connect ten harddrives, but I guess three four-port cards should work as well. There's no need for anything fancy really, as long as I can create a single big software-raid on it at CentOS

Kernel Upgrade and RAID Card
Ok, I've got a RocketRAID 2300 and when i do the update of the kernel it breaks the raid card since the OS is on the raid card itself, i need to install the driver into the new kernel.. Whats the best way to do this? I am reading the manual from the manufacter, but i dont see anything as to a new kernel upgrade. Thanks, Ryan Nichols

PXElinux question - not in FAQ
Peter, we have met in Cyber space looong time ago, when I was requesting 10:minor numbers for the Netwinder project.... Now I am trying to build a network boot for Xandros distribution. I have it working, however I need to do 2 DHCP cycles - 1 happens in PXE, and then it repeats in my network boot code (based on BusyBox). All I need in the second stage is the NFS image address, passed by DHCP

smb_trans2: invalid data
Hello everyone, I have tried to solve out the 'smb_trans2: invalid data' by 'unix extensions = no' as it was written in one of the previous mails. Still I have a bad problem: when I mount like this: mount.smbfs //server/service /local_dir -o username=my_remote_login,uid=my_local_login,gid=users,rw and then I try to copy a file to /local_dir as the user my_local_login, the

feature request: winbind use cached credentials more agressively
Hi! Winbind is rather suboptimally reacts to networking changes. I use my notebook in at least 3 different network settings, in one of them I have very probabilistic access to DCs (cisco vpn client is a crap). An nss lookup sometimes takes very looong, sometimes even returns failure. Sometimes I have to login as root and restart winbind to get to my X session past the screensaver. This is far

Samba and NFS locking on Netapp filers ?
Hello I have troubles with some shares that are NFS mounted to a Netapp filer, if I enable locking on that share, the file cannot be opened by the windows client in write mode ( read only after a looong time ) Anyone has the same problem , it seems to be a Netapp bug but they do not support samba at all :-) so I don't expect any answer from them. thanks

Recommendation for a Good Vulnerability Scanning Service?
Hi, Can someone recommend a good vulnerability scanning service? I just need the minimum for PCI compliance (it's a sort of credit card processing certification). I got a free scan from https://www.hackerguardian.com/ and their scan reported a number of "Fail" results. I haven't checked them all yet but most seem to be things for which fixes were backported looong ago by The

Some loglog density plot
Dear all, A looong time ago, Witold Eryk Wolski asked here why there wasn't a log="xy" parameter to the hist() function <URL:http://www.R-project.org/nocvs/mail/r-help/2001/0267.html>, and Prof. Ripley responded that a loglog histogram does not make much sense, and that one should use a better density estimate if one seeks to plot log density. I understand the point and I
