top 10/most popular lists
What''s the best way to handle views that show the top 10/most popular/ Recently updated/most commented type listing? Should I have a separate model that is populated with records from other models by a background job or should I need to use some sort of caching? Perhaps both? Tricky model situatione
I have two models Club and users. users are regular authenticated users and some of them might create a club. A club can also have members (essentially users) and there are attributes and models that apply to member but not to users. Here is what I have right now. Club => belongs_to :user User => has_many clubs (since a user can host multiple clubs). Now how do I fit this member model

max-age/header problems with nginx
0 down vote favorite I notice that in my production enviornment (where I have memcached implemented) in see a cache-control - max-age header in firebug, anytime I am looking at an index page (posts for example). Cache-Control max-age=315360000 In my dev environment that header looks like following. Cache-Contro private, max-age=0, must-revalidate As far as I know I have not done anything

Apache 2.2.3 ETag weirdness.
I'm looking to clarify this entry I found in a changelog(line 2062ish) on a CentOS 5 box for Apache 2.2.3 *) mod_include no longer allows an ETag header on 304 responses. PR 19355. [Geoffrey Young <geoff apache.org>, Andr? Malo] Loading the mod_include module prevents any ETags headers from being sent from the box. If I comment out mod_include, ETags are sent as expected.

Rails Default ETag Generation
How does Rails generate ETags by default? I''ve got config.action_controller. perform_caching set to true in production so that I can use page-level caching in a few specific places, but it seems that Rails is automatically setting ETags on *all* responses even though I''m not using fresh_when or the stale? helpers in any of my actions. How is Rails deciding to do this and how

memcache in prod vs dev
I am using memcache for caching in my rails app and currently I have a dev and a production environment. I would like to run the dev environment without caching so that I can debug more easily but I wanna enable the caching in production obviously. I am using github and capistrano for deployment. Without doing a check at every statement where I can potentially dig into the cache, is there any

[PATCH] Report last-modified time of hive root and nodes
The infrastructure for modified-time reporting has been essentially unused. These changes report the registry time by treating the time fields as Windows filetime fields stored in little-Endian (which means they can be treated as a single 64-bit little-Endian integer). Some of the code changes necessary include: * Exposing the hive_h structure in the hivex header file (via generator.ml) *

Help accessing http headers?
Hi, I''m using Mechanize, and I''ve developed a lot of code around it. I''d like to be able to check the Etag header during a get to see if the page has changed, as well as some other http header information. Can I do that without hacking Mechanize myself? Does anyone have any examples of how to do this? William

[LLVMdev] version 1.0, compiling under cygwin
Hello llvmdev, (just for fun) I've tried to compile LLVM under cygwin. With "make -k" I got only: ----------------- DynamicLinker.cpp: In function `void* GetAddressOfSymbol(const char*)': DynamicLinker.cpp:40: error: `RTLD_DEFAULT' undeclared (first use this function) DynamicLinker.cpp:40: error: (Each undeclared identifier is reported only once for each

MySQL index question
I am trying to speed up some DB operations and perhaps have gone overboard with indexes. Does MySQL usually use only one index per query and simply match keys on the results of the indexed first part? For example: DELETE FROM tokens WHERE 6813946236211560448 <= fnv AND fnv < 6818449835838930944 AND updated_at<''2010-06-20 14:08:55'' AND occurrences=0; If I understand

Mongrel and MemcacheSessionStore
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hey, I''ve been using Mongrel for quite some time now but I ran into an issue that threw me back to lighttpd + fastcgi. The application in question was running fine in the production environment with SQLSessionStore and using a mongrel cluster behind a load balancer. However, by switching to a MemcacheSessionStore (using either

memcache, sessions, fragments, oh my!
Hi all - I am trying to get rails to use memcache for sessions and fragment caching. I''d also like to use the same connection for general caching of this and that. I''m following the instructions here: http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowtoChangeSessionStore and hitting a brick wall. I''m using the new memcache-client since from what I''ve read

Rails 2.3 memcache performance drop
After much effort I upgraded our fairly large Rails app from 2.1 to 2.3. After deployment yesterday I noticed an across the board increase in response times. It seems that every call to memcache now takes 10x longer than before. Here are some example numbers from my development log (below), with memcache running locally. We see similar scale of performance drop in production as well - average
