distance_of_time_in_words_to_now
Hi There,
As I have learned the hard way, let me discuss my question, idea or feature
here before doing actual work on it...
distance_of_time_in_words_to_now() seems to be unable to tell if this
distance is in the future or in the past.
I''d really like to see ''in 5 days'' or ''5 days ago'' depending on, well, if
it was 5 days ago or will be in 5

comments on HAML ?
I have been asked a couple of times at job interviews if I am
familiar with HAML or Liquid so I was wondering if maybe I should
start using them and perhaps it would make the views easier to work
with.
If I install HAML on a machine where my app is that has alot of
regular HTML in the .erb views already, will it still work with those
or do I need to convert everything to HAML ? Can I have some

Newbie question about using helpers in controllers
I''m trying to display a list of pages in xml. I want to change
page.update_at to distance_of_time_in_words_to_now. However whenever I
run it I get an error saying:
undefined method `distance_of_time_in_words_to_now''
I know I can just go the rails api and copy the source, but there must
be another way.
def list
@page = Page.find(:all, :order => "updated_at desc")

haml to erb - does it work with new html5 tags?
Hi,
I wanted to covert all my erb over to haml, but I use HTML5 tags like
nav, section, article, etc. Any idea if this is supported by haml?
Checked out their site, nothing mentioned there or did I miss
something. Sorry noob here.

Haml & Sass
I would like to use Haml for pages (and possibly templates) and Sass
for CSS. But I am a webgen newbie and can''t figure out the
configuration. Is such a configuration possible? Could someone help me
set it up?

HAML question - conditional multiple classes on a div
I am looking into HAML and am trying to convert one of my ERB templates to
see what I think of it. Everything was going pretty well until I got to the
following snippet:
<div class="<%= t.done ? "task done": "task" %>">
<p class="title"><%= h(t.description)%></p>
</div>
How would you do this in HAML? (I know how to

created_on & updated_on - helper to display date only
All,
My initial list is rather busy. I would like to shorten the
created_on and updated_on fields to just display the date, not the
time. Best wold be a simple 12/28/05 type of presentation.
I''ve found the format helpers in rdoc. (ie.
distance_of_time_in_words_to_now ), but none seem to be what I''m
looking for.
How do I control the date format of a timestamp field?
Thanks

haml says yes, rails says no
I''m using the haml gem and it''s great, been using it for a while and I
love it.
I''ve got a problem trying to display the flash messages, if I do the
following:
- if flash[:notice]
#flashNotice
=flash[:notice]
- else if flash[:error]
#flashError
=flash[:error]
- end
I get
You don''t need to use "- end"

formatted date down-counter - help!
I''d like to have a count down to a certain date, but display it in
words, such as "123 days away" or something. I''m aware of the function
"distance_of_time_in_words_to_now()", which will display "about 6 hours"
or "12 days" or something like that, but how can I get it to reverse?
Pass it a date for future reference, then it will error

HAML makes me love and hate Python
I''m just a rails newbie, but I thought I would point out a small
observation.
About a year ago, I was having real trouble making the decision about
whether I should learn Ruby or Python. I finally settled on Ruby, one
of the reasons being that I didn''t want my language to tell me how
whitespace should work. (Although the main reason was how object
oriented Ruby is)

Rails, Ruby, haml, metaprogramming problem
In HAML I have hundreds of lines like the following:
- xyz = someFuncThatReturnsString(''xyz'')
and elsewhere
%div{''id'' => xyz}
The above lines work fine.

Attempting to keep things DRY (Don''t repeat yourself) I want to do
something like
- eval(otherFuncThatReturnsString(''xyz''))

distance_of_time_in_words_to_now with "ago" suffix
I wanted the distance_of_time_in_words_to_now method to have '' ago''
suffixed to it when the date is in the past, I assumed this would be the
default behaviour but apparently not. I know of a REALLY messy way that
i could solve this with, but it''s so ugly I can''t be bothered
Does anybody have an easy, elegant solution?

DEPRECATION WARNING: Passing a template handler in the template name is deprecated. (rspec + haml)
I upgraded a small project that I had created on 3.1.3 to 3.2.0.rc2.
Running rspec on it brings about a large amount of these messages:
DEPRECATION WARNING: Passing a template handler in the template name is
deprecated. You can simply remove the handler name or pass render :handlers
=> [:haml] instead. (called from block (2 levels) in <top (required)> at

Create haml files with rspec_controller command?
It is a nuisance to have to rename all of your files from .erb to .haml.
Is there a quick way around this?

Haml ... ending a line with a | (vertical bar)
I don''t know if HAML questions are appropriate here ... but here goes.
How does on end line to be rendered with a vertical bar (|) ?
The vertical bar is a line continuation, aparently.
Doing \| cause the vertical bar to be emitted ... as well as the
backslash.

distance_of_time_in_german_words
Hiall,
This could be useful for those of you producing websites in the german
language. Basically I copied the definition of the rails builtin
distance_of_time_in_words and extracted another method
german_words_for_distance_in_seconds. Just put these e.g. into module
ApplicationHelper and you can use it in all views.
def distance_of_time_in_german_words(from_time, to_time = 0,
include_seconds
