Securing SSH
So I setup ssh on a server so I could do some work from home and I think the second I opened it every sorry monkey from around the world has been trying every account name imaginable to get into the system. What's a good way to deal with this?

Shell script to list group members
I have several shell scripts to manage user accounts on a server. I've been using a file with the usernames of peoples accounts that any script needs to process. I had a thought that I can and should be setting up groups and adding user accounts to those groups so I don't have to maintain a set of files with the user accounts. So essentially, I am looking for a (simple) shell

Fedora user moving to CentOS
Greetings, I'm a Fedora user likely going to switch to CentOS in the next few days. I'm wondering if anyone has some heads up advice for me? I am very familiar with FC6 and before so I anticipate few problems I haven't already seen (and know were fixed). The main reason for the move is so I don't have to re-install so frequently and hopefully not have to deal with so many

Redirecting print output
I see a rich set of graphic device functions to redirect that output. Are there commands to redirect text as well. I have a set of functions that execute many linear regression tests serially and I want to capture this in a file for printing. Thanks, Stan Hopkins [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

A little iptables help
Wondering if anyone is willing to give me a little assistance with some firewall rules. I think what I'm looking for is fairly simple, and I've been trying to use webmin's firewall module without success. I have a web server that I'd like to open up port 80 and forward a specific port for a select number of allowed ips. That's it. Everything else is dropped. allow: port 80

Speed issue with one directory only
I am having a speed issue with Samba and only one folder (/var/www/html) I'm not sure what to try next. I have problems browsing to this folder from WINXP, it seems to hang for about 30 seconds before accessing it. This doesn't happen with any other directories on the box. This directory has a Samba share setup for it, but the speed issue comes up if I use another share and browse to this

Centos 5 and milter rpm's
As I mentioned on this list before, I'm switching from Fedora 6 to Centos 5. I'm setting up the mail server and on Fedora I used the milter rpms for greylisting, spamassassin, mimedefant etc. However I don't see that those are included with Centos? Is this true, or do my yum repositories need to be changed to look in an 'extras' location? Or is there some other source

IMAP - multi-simultaneous-user mail store
I'm finishing converting from POP to IMAP and I'm seeing some potentially powerful uses, but I wonder if my ideas aren't more abuses. I want to create 'multi-user' accounts that allow groups of users to archive and share emails with each other. For example, in the case of a sales department, emails from customers may have requests for new product features. I could create

Job in Atlanta.
Hello list! I'm looking for someone who is local to Atlanta and is proficient in coding (PHP, MySQL, TCP/IP) and has knowledge of Asterisk. Knowledge in any CRM technologies, screen-pops integration, large call volume is also helpful and puts you right in my face. I do not mean to disrespect the list by posting here, but I don't know where to post so this is essentially asking for help on

Running R from SAS
Hello All, I am interested in running an R program with several random seeds. One approach is to launch the program from SAS. The recommended approach is to use the X command as shown below: OPTIONS XWAIT XSYNC; X "r.exe --no-save --quiet <""c:\temp\r\program.r"" >""c:\temp\r\program.log"""; However, this does not seem to work for me.

Firebug 1.2.0b4 for FF3
The current beta version of Firebug doesn't appear to install on Firefox 3 on CentOS 5.2, apparently because it's reporting itself as 3.0b5 rather 3.0. I tweaked the minVersion requirement in the xpi to 3.0b5 and it seems to be working fine for me now. In case anyone else is interested in testing it, my tweaked version is available here:

best repo for perl-IO-Zlib perl-Archive-Tar
With all due respect to the various people, their hard work and associated repos, where is the best place to do a yum install for these two packages below in regards to an internet facing production Centos 4.4 server perl-IO-Zlib perl-Archive-Tar I noticed dag and karan repos appear to have it and my experience and research tells me that using CPAN is not an option for possible problems at

Dovecot .99 Bug - LF not found where expected
After about three years of this, it seems I have finally gotten somewhere near to the bottom of this. The symptom: Suddenly a user cannot download their email. Checking again through SquirrelMail, I get an error which says a log was written. Going to the logs I see "imap(username): Error indexing mbox file /var/mail/username: LF not found where expected" Using Webmin's read
