Tricky model situatione
I have two models Club and users. users are regular authenticated users and some of them might create a club. A club can also have members (essentially users) and there are attributes and models that apply to member but not to users. Here is what I have right now. Club => belongs_to :user User => has_many clubs (since a user can host multiple clubs). Now how do I fit this member model

http caching a dynamic page
Is it possible to take advantage of http caching/proxy caching with dynamic pages? i.e. pages with section/part that can change over time but certain part of the page remain the same. I would rather not keep re-rendering the static part but insure the dynamic part are rendered with fresh data. I am using memcached mostly as an object store that I can minimize db hits but I still am rendering a

max-age/header problems with nginx
0 down vote favorite I notice that in my production enviornment (where I have memcached implemented) in see a cache-control - max-age header in firebug, anytime I am looking at an index page (posts for example). Cache-Control max-age=315360000 In my dev environment that header looks like following. Cache-Contro private, max-age=0, must-revalidate As far as I know I have not done anything

paperclip, authlogic and callback issue
I use authlogic for authentication and paperclip for handling user''s profile picture attachments. I use the following method to get the current_user def current_user_session return @current_user_session if defined? (@current_user_session) @current_user_session = UserSession.find end def current_user return @current_user if defined?(@current_user)

Intended behaviour of "add user" and smbpasswd
Hi, I'd like to upgrade my 2.2 samba to the latest 3.x stable, so I'm experimenting with the new features of 3.x on a RHEL 3 clone. I've run into some difficulty when using usrmgr.exe for administrating users. I've filled out the 'add user script' define with: add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd -g sambausers -c "Samba User" -d /dev/null -s

Restart after crash
Hi, Is it possible do have fsck to run automatically [without operator intervention], if it was not a clean shutdown. Right now, somebody has to bring a monitor & keyboard and say Y, if not it will not run and verify the drive. This is for remote headless servers. -- Thanks http://www.911networks.com

Hosed by 4.2
Hi, I have been using Centos since 3.0. I have been upgrading regularly without any major problem. 4.1 to 4.2 has been a total disaster. I ran yum update, it went through and a couple of hours later I rebooted and X froze with the screen just being just fuzz [regular rectangles, orange, green...] and the keyboard froze. Could not do a alt-ctrl-backspace, nor a Alt-F1-6 nor Alt-Ctrl-Del. I

counter_cache, has_many and belongs_to
I am a bit confused about counter_cache here. The API docs http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActiveRecord/Associations/ClassMethods.html say that only the belongs_to association can take the :counter_cache option. When I try to use it on a has_many I get an "unknown key(s): counter_cache" error. Why would this be the case? belongs_to means that this model has a field with an id

counter_cache is not looking for children_count with acts_as_tree
Hi there, the acts_as_tree API says that I can set a counter cache and that it will automatically increment the "children_count" column. I did that but when I create a new page it asks for a "pages_count" column instead. Here is the relevant part of page.rb model: class Page < ActiveRecord::Base acts_as_tree :order => :position, :counter_cache => true

conditional updated_on update
Hi list, I''ve got some counter_caches in a model. When these get incremented - say on a page view - my updated_on column also gets updated. How can I conditionally not update updated_on if just these counter_cache columns change? The problem with that is that I am using acts_as_versioned which clones the record each time updated_on changes. I am successfully ignoring the counter_cache

Ferret FileNotFound error after adding counter_cache to mode
I have a model that I''ve been indexing and searching with ferret with no problems. I just added a counter_cache for some voting functionality to the same model and now when I perform the voting fxn on an object from that model, I get the FileNotFound error as it looks for a file named "_1c_1.del" ...which breaks my voting function. I tried killing the server and my index

Pointer ownership with GECreateDevDesc/GEDestroyDevDesc
According to the "R Internals" document, for a custom device, I should create a pDevDesc structure that gets passed to GECreateDevDesc. ..elided... pDevDesc dev; /* Allocate and initialize the device driver data */ if (!(dev = (pDevDesc) calloc(1, sizeof(DevDesc)))) return 0; /* or error() */ /* set up device driver or free ?dev? and error() */ gdd = GEcreateDevDesc(dev);

Java Swing App
I'm rather new to Wine, and I'm trying to run a Java Swing application. I'm having trouble with it. Has anyone else gotten Swing-based apps to run? I have a test case, basically a swing "hello world" app, and I haven't been able to get it to work either. Here's what happens when I try to compile it: [dritch@twitch wine]$ wine -- c:/jdk1.3/bin/javac -g -d

acts_as_tree counter_cache behavior is different than API docs
Before I file a ticket, I''ll query ya''ll about this: The API docs for acts_as_tree''s counter_cache is to create a database column called "children_count" to hold the counter_cache. I have enabled this option in my model. While writing tests I wrote a test for creating children from the a parent: message = @forum_message["parent"].find child =

counter_cache is making a redundant SELECT before UPDATE
Hi, I have the following code: Message, belongs_to :topic, :counter_cache => true topic = Topic.find_from_permalink(params[:id]) topic.messages.create(params[:message]) When the message gets created, then AR issues a supplemental SELECT to retrieve the message''s topic and then updates its messages_count. Why is that happening? If I do it manually: if

counter_cache reference/tutorial
I''m trying to use counter_cache, but I''m not doing something right. It is unreliable and I keep having to correct it manually. Is there a good tutorial or reference on how to use it on-line? I have the AWDR book, but I need something more complete. TIA, Jeffrey

Should counter_cache fields be saved in the database?
As far as I can tell, the counter_cache option on a belongs_to model doesn''t actually save anything in the database. For example, I have the following models: class Parent < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :children, :conditions => "deleted_at IS NULL" end class Child < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :parent, :counter_cache => true end With the following

STI, HABTM & counter_cache
Hello world... I have an interesting issue that the online docs aren''t helping me with. In my app I have 4 models Item < ActiveRecord Deal < Item Product < Item Category < ActiveRecord Item has_and_belongs_to_many :categories... On each category record I''d like to maintain a product_count and deal_count to increase performance. This doesn''t appear
