Color cells of a matrix as in Excel
All,
I frequently make spreadsheets in Excel in which I rank values in columns
by stop-light colors (red is bad, yellow is OK, green is good).
Image and heatmap expect a matrix in which all the data are in the same
scale, but I frequently have different scales in different columns. ie.
Column one runs from 1-10 while column 2 runs from 1-100. I thus need to
define a separate color ramp for each

new function: twotailed.colors {base}
I suggest to add a new function to create a vector of
n ``contiguous'' colors with tails in two colors.
This function is similar to `cm.colors' but the colors
can be choosen by hsv values.
This function could be used e.g. as alternative to
the default ``col.regions'' in `levelplot'.
Perhaps the arguments in the following code could be
simplified.

3-dimensional table
Hi,
Last week my class conducted an experiment by putting out clay
caterpillars to look at the effects of urbanization, color, and location
on caterpillar predation. There were two sites (urban, rural), three
colors (green, yellow, red) and two locations at each site (edge,
interior). The entire data set is below. I've checked out the MASS
book, Dalgaard's book, and the R-help archives

Color schemes that work for people with color-deficient vision
A recent article in the earth science literature cited below and available at
http://geography.uoregon.edu/datagraphics/EOS/
points out that rainbow color schemes and mixtures of green and yellow
can be troublesome for people with color-deficient vision.
The authors propose alternative schemes that can be viewed and downloaded
in RGB, HSV, CMYK, and RGB256 formats from

mapping of colornames into hsv: half way done
Ok,
now we have the mapping of color names to color codes (see below) and
conversion to rgb (something like Ben Bolker's function), but how to convert
rgb to hsv?
Thanks to Brian Ripley, Peter Dalgaard and Ben Bolker
Details below

Setting a Red->Yellow->Green Color Transition in Image(...) with yellow corresponding with the Mean Value...
In the following example I would like to have the color transition from
Red->yellow->green in the image(...) function, and if possible have the yellow
be set to correspond with the mean value (for the below 75).
?
I was able to figure something like out when using filled.contour(...), e.g.
filled.contour(ak.fan, levels = c(70, 73, 76,?80, 90), color = terrain.colors)

color specific(!) lines in different color with in parcoord plots
Dear Madame or Sir,
in my current project, I have so far used a lot of very different plots. I am now trying to gain informatin with the help of parallel coordinate plots. Therefore, I use the function "parcoord" of the MASS package. What I would like to do, is to color let's say the points according to the first half of rows of a specific matrix/dataframe in a color different from

Specifying data type when creating a dataframe using RODBC
H R-helpers,
I am using the following code to make a dataframe from an Excel spreadsheet:
library(RODBC)
channel <- odbcConnectExcel("Spreadsheet.xls")
Data <- sqlFetch(channel, "Tab1")
odbcClose(channel)
One column (several, actually) in the spreadsheet contains integers in
its first few rows but later values in these columns contain a mixture

cond.col <- c("green", "yellow", "red")
to represent a quantitative variable, where green means 'OK', yellow
represents 'warning'
and red represents 'danger'. Using these particular color names, in B/W,
red is darkest
and yellow is lightest. I'd like to find color designations to replace

filled.contour colorbar without black color separators?
Dear list members,
I have been using filled.contour in order to plot EEG data. For the colors, I used a conventional ramp from blue to red (blue - green - yellow - red), and 100 color levels to make the plot looking smooth:
(...) color.palette = colorRampPalette(c('blue','green', 'yellow','red'), space='rgb'), nlevels = 100 (...)
My problem ist that

Help with levelplot color assignment in lattice
Dear R users,
I'm currently trying to make level plots of a longitudinal study of the
spatio-temporal spread of a plant disease in a field, but the results of the
color key assignment isn't what I expect.
Here's more info. I recorded the level of a disease on an ordinal scale from
0 (no disease) to 9 (dead plant) on a grid that has 9 rows and 14 columns.
The disease level on each
