How to work on Timing and Scheduling for a game?
Hi all,
I''m working on a sport game that needs a timing system with the following
needs:
- The game works on a Season basis. So players will be able to see which day
of the season today is.
- Games will be scheduled according to this Season''s time.
- Length of day can be customized. Not necessarily 24h as a normal day.
- Administrator can start and restart seasons by specifying

validate_uniqueness_of builds queries with IS NULL when value is nil (since RC 5)
Hi people,
Ever since RC 5 (including 1.0) my unit tests that test for inserting
duplicate entries fail and throw errors. Each of them implements
validate_uniqueness_of to prevent duplicates. While I also put in a
ticket for this, I''m wondering if this is actually a defect or maybe
intended behaviour afterall. If so, I won''t apply the patch again and
look for another

Case sensitive validate_uniqueness_of isn't working
Hi,
validate_uniqueness_of has the option :case_sensitive, this option is
true by default, there are tests to check that :case_sensitive =>
false is working, but there isn''t any test to check that, when set to
true (the default!), is working, in fact it doesn''t work at.
There isn''t a database agnostic way to do a case sensitive search,
there is in myql (binary like)

Orphaned rsync process on remote machine?
All,
Sometimes when I do an rsync, it times out and leaves on orphaned
process on the remote machine. I am running rsync over ssh using
public key authentication. I synchronize about twenty-five machines,
and this problem only appears on one of them. It worked until
recently on this machine. I don't know what changed or what is
different.
I run rsync with a command line like this

validate_uniqueness_of {combination of fields} ???
I''ve looked at the validates documentation and it appears that validates_uniqueness_of works on only one field at a time. So I can, for example, validate that "sam" is unique to the record set, and that "smith" is unique to the record set.
My problem is that each record includes two fields, the _combination_ of which must be unique to the record set, but each of

Heterogeneous negative binomial
I have seen several queries about parameterizing the negative binomial scale
parameter. This is called
the heterogeneous negative binomial. I have written a function called
"nbinomial" which is in the
msme package on CRAN. Type ?nbinomial to see the help file. The default
model is a negative binomial
for which the dispersion parameter is directly related to mu, which is how

Win95 won't work with Samba 2.0.2
Hmmm... I've sent a couple of questions to the list recently, with
no responses. Are my messages getting out?
Since upgrading to 2.0.2, our Win95 boxes are having problems
accessing shares. WinNT works perfectly. Win95 worked fine
with 1.whatever, but now it can only see files that are actually in
the share directory. It can see subdirectories of the share, but
they appear as empty

validates_uniqueness_of - how to use multiple values for scope
Hi
I''m trying to create a basic test management tool to organise the manual
testing I have to do. I''m working on the results recording module and have a
problem.
Basically, I want each test result to belong to a test case, a test
environment and a build.
I want to make sure there''s no duplication of results with these 3
properties. If someone tries to enter a new test

how to construct bivariate joint cumulative pdf from bivariate joint pdf
Hello,
I am using sm.density() to find the bivariate joint PDFof events:
For eg,
x<-cbind(rnorm(30),rnorm(30))
den<-sm.density(x)
Then I get the joint pdf from den$estimate in order to constructthe
joint cumulative PDF.
However, summing up all the values from den$estimateisnot equal to
1(have multipliedby the grid size).
Anyone could help?
Thanks.

calculating joint entropy of many variables
Hello list.
I need help (e.g., a reference, code, package, etc.) in calculating the
joint entropy of many variables (some sure highly mutually-informative and
some not).
Is there anyone here who knows a computationally-efficient solution (such
as an R package)? I appreciate you help ...
Best, Reza

SOLVED Can't joint domain per LDAP slave servers
Strange.
Both systems are Linux.
I compiled the LDAP slave Samba with CFLAGS="-O2 -march=i686" and SuSE's GCC
3.3.1.
The fine working master got the same CFLAGS but SuSE's GCC 2.95.3.
Without CFLAGS the GCC 3.3.1 works fine too.
Didn't know that optimization (and GCC>3) is that dangerous....
Thanks anyway

SMACOF joint configuration plot with bread data?
Dear R-helpers,
I have dist class objects for 10 individuals rating the
dissimilarities (on a 100-point scale) of the same 10 faces (analogous
to the bread data). I would like to get an individual differences
scaling jointly for the individual judges and the faces, and plot them
on the same axes.
This is the example:

optimize a joint lieklihood with mle2
Hi
I'm trying to maximize a joint likelihood of 2 likelihoods (Likelihood 1 and
Likelihood 2) in mle2, where the parameters I estimate in Likelihood 2 go
into the likelihood 1. In Likelihood 1 I estimate the vector logN with
length 37, and for the Likelihood 2 I measure a vector s of length 8.
The values of s in Lieklihood 2 are used in the Likelihood 1.
I have 2 questions:

Joint maximum likelihood estimation for ordinal data
Dear R users
>From what I understand, the joint maximum likelihood procedure for Rasch
(availabe in the package MiscPsycho) in R can only be used on binary data.
I was wondering if the code is currently being adapted for application to
ordinal data? I'm trying to replicate results obtained from Winsteps in R.
Best wishes
