AWDwR typography question
So, I''ve been listing to stuff folks have been saying about the Bookman font we use. Most people like the font, but some feel there aren''t enough words/line, so your eyes move too much. So, I spent the weekend playing with typography, and I''ve come up with a compromise. The thing is: it looks good to me, but I don''t want to mess up the read for others

weird behaviour of summary.default
Hi all. I may missing something here, but if I do summary.default(1:9999), I get: Min. 1st Qu. Median Mean 3rd Qu. Max. 1 2500 5000 5000 7500 9999 but if I do summary.default(1:10001) I get: Min. 1st Qu. Median Mean 3rd Qu. Max. 1 2501 5001 5001 7501 10000 i.e. Max is rounded to 10000. What's wrong? My system:

Splitting a dataframe at the results of tapply
I have got a dataframe containing measurement of aircraft noise like this: > Id <- c(1,4,5,2,3,6,4,1,2,5,6,3) > Noise <- c(88,94,97,98,92,56,103,102,87,95,92,97) > Height <- c(190, 150, 120, 115, 188, 104, 101, 189, 146, 111, 124, 126) > > df <- data.frame(Id, Noise, Height) Now I would like to split this in two new dataframes. The first one containing the rows

Maximum number of patterns and speed in grep
Hi, I am using R's grep function to find patterns in vectors of strings. The number of patterns I would like to match is 7,700 (of different sizes). I noticed that I get an error message when I do the following: data <- array() for (j in 1:length(x)) { array[j] <- length(grep(paste(patterns[1:7700], collapse = "|"), x[j], value = T)) } When I break this up into 4 chunks of

VMs won't power on
Hello - I have installed the VMware-server-1.0.5-80187.i386.rpm package on a CentOS 5.1 system. I then ran the vmware-config.pl program. I chose mostly default answer, except that I did not choose the NAT option; I saw no errors. I used the VMware Server Console to create a Red Hat Linux VM. I also copied an externally created VM into the '/var/lib/vmware/Virtual Machines/'

bug in aac driver (revisited?)
I am posting this as I was researching an issue with my Adaptec 2200s controller, where I would get command timeouts on the controller under heavy constant load (either using rsync or ncftp to mirror folders). I noticed some interesting information that Scott Long posted about issues with 4GB RAM and the firmware. Well, I have 4GB of RAM, and a SuperMicro X5DPL-iGM mobo (intel 7501 chipset), and

OpenSSH upgrade 4.1p to 5.1p brings ssh_exchange_identification trouble
I hurt myself in an upgrade. All was working well until a new requirement made sshd.config's MATCH ADDRESS clause essential. I'm hoping someone will recognize how these facts correlate with changes made in the openssh software. Facts: * SUSE Linux ES 10 SP2 x64 * Old openssh was 4.1p (from 2005)] * New openssh is 5.1p, installed using SLES's software management tools * No other

Failing SIP registration brings * down
Hi there, this is now the second time I've seen an issue like this with 1.2.7.1, the first time it was a DNS hickup, today its some Internet congestion: When one (!) or more register statements in sip.conf fail the entire Asterisk becomes very unresponsive and does not accept registrations from local phones. This is bad because I could live with being temporarily unreachable thru my

Hard-to-find bug brings down whole kernel
I have an older Lenovo machine, a T61, with the Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M. There is this random bug that would hang the whole machine, and then cause a panic and reboot it (the caps lock light is flashing). I can't get any kernel messages of this issue except the one in this YouTube video I had luck to film and catch the error: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y1X6s7_laGw The bug can be

Making Knitr work
Might not be the best place to ask, but i could get lucky.. I have setup an eclipse environment to write sweave files lately and wanted to switch to knitr. I could get it to work on easy files, but my earlier written sweave file fails to be knit properly. Here is the error message: Quitting from lines 273-276: Error in setwd(base.dir) : kann Arbeitsverzeichnis nicht wechseln (it says: cannot
