SOLVED: Re: KStars on CentOS 4.4?
I was able to install the kdeedu RPM, from the Fedora Core 3 Install DVD, without any problem, on my CentOS 4.4 box and KStars is up and running and has been updated. :-) The bad news is that I didn't learn anything, by doing it this quick and simple way, so now I'm going to begin reading about creating my own RPMs. When I get the CentOS 5.0 install DVD, that will be another issue for

DVD reader: Hardware problem or OS glitch?
Hello: The box is dual boot (Win XP & CentOS 5). A Dell Dimension 4300 Celeron. There was an intermittent problem with this last year and last Thanksgiving, I wiped the HD and installed Win XP and CentOS 5 clean. My daughter asked me to install KStars which is in the kdeedu RPM on the Fedora Core 6 Install DVD. I did that, without any problems, on my box and on my wife's box. On the

kdewebdev aka Quanta or repository kde-redhat.sourceforge.net
does this exist for CentOS 4 ? OK - next level of question then... taking a wild swing, I set up /etc/yum.repos/kde-redhat.repo and for S&G's, I ran the obligatory 'yum update' to see what would happen. It's an aggressive update to be sure. KDE 3.5.0 (and all the dependent stuff such as qt) but also samba and openoffice. Is anyone reporting happiness / contentment with

Automount configuration problem
I have a simple automount configuration problem. I've done two similar, clean, Custom installations of CentOS 5.0, on two similar, but not identical boxes. On my box, automount is working perfectly. On my daughter's box, it's not working. If I put the FC6 DVD into the drive in my box, I can see the contents of the DVD, without any problem. If I cat /etc/mtab in my box, I see this line:

Jumping from FC2
Some time ago I installed FC2 at the request of an employer. That contract ended over a year ago, and FC2 is an orphan. I am gradually feeling more pressure to jump from FC2, and do not wish to remain with the Fedora Core Project, as I don't want to make installing and upgrading my machine into a hobby. I already maintain a Debian machine for my girlfriend, but I'm not sure I wish make

CentOS for non-tech user
I'm thinking of giving CentOS to a non-tech user for her new desktop. He needs are small. She has been used to Mozilla for both mail and browsing, so equivalents there are not a problem. She needs grip and lame, for her mp3s - again no problem. In fact the only problem I can see is that gwenview doesn't appear to have the kipi-plugins. I can see libkipi listed, but no plugins,

Dual boot box: WinXP & CentOS 5: Impossible to restore WinXP?
We rarely use M$ Windows, but I let my daughter surf pbskids.org while using Windows and a Trojan Horse modified or deleted the user32.dll file. I found the instructions on the Microsoft Support web site, and it would be very easy for me to expand a new copy of user32.dll if I could get the MS WinXP CD to work. It boots OK, I press a key so it will search hardware and it then has hard drive

atrpms nvidia cannot load
Hi guys - brand new 5.1 install here and quite happy - but... The nv driver did not work at all for me, fritzy stripes and dots. This is a GeForce 7300 LE which was working happily dual-head under FC6 with the livna nvidia RPMs So I looked around and it seemed like the ATRpms repo via yum was the best option for CentOS. This is what I installed, it worked great with the xorg.conf from the

Fedora 11 i386 Evolution address book --> CentOS 5.4 x86_64
Finally moved my home desktop from Fedora to CentOS. My spouse was unhappy with me upgrading from F9-->F10-->f11 etc and wanted something more stable. I built a second machine which is now running in parallel to the old F11 desktop. I moved my data (mail and files) from the F11 box to the CentOS 5.4 box. I used tar to move everything. Mail and files transferred A-OK...but the Evolution

"yum update" did not update kernel on one box
This morning, I did "yum update" on my wife's box. It did not update the kernel. I ran the command again, and there is a response that no updates are available. Her box is a Compaq Evo D300v Celeron. During the past couple of days, when I did "yum update", on my daughters box and mine (Dell Dimensions), the kernel was updated and in the GRUB menus now, there are two (2)

Problems reading a backup data DVD
I wrote a bunch of files to a backup DVD about two months ago and now neither of my drives will read it. I get mount errors from "not a directory" to something like "unrecognized file system type" and so on, usually after a really long wait and a notice about how the drive is write-protected (duh). Here's what happened most recently: # mount /dev/hdc /mnt mount: block

Wiki updates needed for rpmrepo.org when it's up & running
When rpmrepo.org is up and running properly, there are 2 or 3 Wiki pages that need to be updated. I wiped the HD on my daughter's box and am trying to install multimedia on it again. The change from RPMForge to rpmrepo.org requires some minor updates to several Wiki pages. http://wiki.centos.org/TipsAndTricks/MultimediaOnCentOS http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/Repositories/RPMForge

Triple- or Quad-display single-card graphics solutions
So, after some discussion of our new control workstations, we are iterating in on a solution; we are looking at a 1U short-depth SuperMicro SuperServer 5017R-MF with a graphics card in the PCI-Ex16 expansion slot. However, the display requirements have increased to 3 or more monitors for future expansion, so I was wondering whether anyone had any experience with triple- or quad-display single card
