Spacewalk or Puppet?
I am a little new to managing large numbers of CentOS/RHEL servers and was wondering what you experienced sysadmins prefer, Spacewalk or Puppet? Changing default nic and storage types
Hi, Simple question that I can't track down any notable discussion about, let alone an answer... Is it possible to define what the "default" nic and storage types are? I am deploying images out of cobbler using koan and all of them are running virtio wherever applicable, but this is not the default, and at present there is no way within koan or cobbler to define what type of

CentOS roadmap/EPEL
There are lots of exciting things happening in the CentOS ecosystem at the moment, by which I mean "upstream" or "across stream" in Fedora and RHEL. I'm thinking of projects that equip RH-like EL in general for serious entry into the enterprise, things like the Fedora Directory Server, and RedHat's Emerging Technologies projects such as Cobbler, FreeIPA and Ovirt.

kexec for CentOS 4?
I have a remote CentOS 4 machine on a network where I can't put a DHCP or PXE server, and I want to do a complete reinstall. So what I want to do is, from the currently-running system, to invoke an installation kernel and initrd in just the same way that GRUB would, giving it a boot command line that specifies a remote kickstart file, installation tree, and other required info. It looks like

Ctrl-Alt-Fn
Hi, I''ve been posting this question to lots of lists and not getting good answers. I have a Ubuntu Hardy laptop. With a ssh connection to a RHEL5 xen dom0. Running cobbler/koan on the dom0 Koan --virt --nogfx ... starts a new domU on the xen box and starts up the RHEL5 installer the installer attempts to configure its network interface using DHCP and gets stuck If this was an install

undefined method `[]' for nil:NilClass
I upgrade our infrastructure (mostly RHEL5, some RHEL6) from 3.1 to puppet-3.2.1-1.el5. Ruby sits at ruby-1.8.7.370-1.el5. I ran some tests and everything seemed good so I pushed it out. Since then, all my puppet clients are failing with this: Error: Could not retrieve catalog from remote server: Error 400 on SERVER: undefined method `[]'' for nil:NilClass at

best practice: how to setup a central "network installation server"?
Hi, I want to setup a central installation server, but haven't done this before, so I want to find out what would be best practices for this? The server I have already runs as a central repo, which is updated from one or our local centos mirrors, and the other CentOS servers (both i386 & x64), as well as CentOS VPS's get their updates from this server. But, now I want to allow a

openoffice
Since rpm from openoffice.org was not nicely integrate with Centos, what is the best way to make OO uptodate, can i use (or depend on) package from fedora (it slightly outdate but not too far from OO release). Having see the huge spec file (around 3700 lines), building it ourself is really not fun :( --beast

disk partitioning: 6.0 install to harddrive using liveCD
Greetings: I'm planning to set up a test Centos 6.0 box (has CDROM, but no DVD) with these partions: / 10GB ( no separate mount for /usr ) /tmp 1GB /var 10GB /boot 500MB The centos mirrors I have seen do not provide the full distro on CD (this box has no DVD). I'm used to having about 6 CD isos to work with. The livecd install to hard

how to install standard software on systems with heterogeneous hardware?
I've been thinking about ways to proceed if I need to set up 5 machines with basically identical software but somewhat variable hardware. A simple approach would be to just set up my golden system and clone the disk, but the hardware differences would probably cause problems. One approach that appeals to me is to install minimal centos on the first system, add a few rpms after installation,

Openoffice 2.3 on centos 5 issue
I have just install OOo 2.3 on new centos 5 box. However OO keep open registration wizard everytime launched, even though i already select "i do not want to register". I've been playing with "$HOME/.openoffice.org2/" but still no luck. This problem did not happen on FC6, so i guess its not OOo bug. --beast

how to change distro live?
hi, we've got many mandrake 8,9 and 10 system remotely. we'd like to remotely replace these systems to centos 5. we've 4 disk in them. one is the system drive (no need for raid) and there is free space on the remaining 3 disk. so what we think about: - download the new system to the data disks - install grub (mandrake has lilo) to boot the old system and reboot - create the old system

Install/configure on FC4 with maildir and mysql
Hello, I have a FC4 x64 server that I am configuring/testing. It had dovecot 0.99 loaded after I did a yum update. That worked great with mbox, the passwd file, and test users in /home/users/username. I would like to be able to authenticate virtual users by 'username at domain.com' and have them be able to use squirrelmail or Outlook/Outlook Express to access their email. Users have

[LLVMdev] [Patch] Let MC/ELF generate Thumb/Thumb-2 are properly
Hi, We are trying to use clang as a drop-in replacement for the gcc come with Android NDK. I found that MC/ELF doesn't not handle Thumb functions properly, e.g., bit 0 of the function name in the .symtab is not set to 1, and some thumb instructions are not generated correctly, e.g., the addresses for tBL/tBLX are not calculated right. With that attached patch, we can compile and run some

Mass installs of desktop systems on identical machines
Hi, I'm running a small Linux consulting business here in a group of small villages in the South of France (http://www.microlinux.fr). I'm using CentOS for everything, servers as well as desktops. The desktop installs are usually highly customized. My approach is to list the client's needs, find the corresponding applications and then install these, to avoid the bloat and

Hi Koan, Have you tried to run Intel and other platform tests? I feel uncomfortable with so many changes in generic MC/ELF regarding specific ARM support... not to mention the magic variables on shifts... ;)
