lapply where each list object has multiple parts

very fast OLS regression?

calculating memory usage
I am comparing two different algorithms in terms of speed and memory usage. I can calculate the processing time with proc.time() as follows but am not sure how to calculate the memory usage. ptm <- proc.time() x <- rnorm(1000000) proc.time() - ptm I would like to be within R itself since I will test the algorithm several hundred times and in batch mode. reshape is re-ordering my variables
Is it an undocumented (at least I missed it if it's documented) feature of the reshape function to do numeric variables followed by character? choose() function returning anomalous results (zero instead of one)

kernel memory and zfs
We have a 32 GB RAM server running about 14 zones. There are multiple databases, application servers, web servers, and ftp servers running in the various zones. Building a what list for scan to use
Using read.table now on large files. Scan should be faster reading and parsing the files if a 'what' list is provided. How would I generate a what list that repeats the the last 4 elements n (n=14 or 10 or 8) times? whatlist=list(Tstamp="",Condition=0,A1=0,B1=0,C1=0,D1=0) All are numeric, either decimal or hexadecimal.
