scientific notation problem
We''re developing a system that''s used for tracking company IPO data
and we''re running into a few number storage issues. For large numbers,
i.e. numbers greater than 100 million, MySQL insists on storing these
as scientific notation. I don''t really have a problem with that but
when we want to edit these fields using something like:

Ruby/rails on Mac OSX not working
I have been using Locomotive for rails development and recently decided
to fix up the ruby/rails install that is on my mac.
As we all know, Ruby 1.8.2 came on the mac and has problems, so I
followed the instructions at Hivelogic for installing the latest
versions of Ruby, Rails, Lighttpd and so forth.
I have this set in my path within bash_login: export

Restoring backup?
I have understood correctly when thinking that all I need to do in order to restore mails, is to just copy the old maildir folder to the location
where mail_location is pointing to and dovecot will find all the mails and display the old mails?

Ruby and Flash?
Hi there,
I have an idea for a game I want to build, but it requires Flash as the presentation layer (I''d want to do the back end in Ruby running on Rails.) I have not been able to find any info on the integration of the two, and someone suggested asking here. Any info would be appreciated. Any links to examples would be great too.
Thanks - please make sure you respond to me directly

Migration and Mysql row ID
Apologies if this has been discussed before, but with the search
function down its hard to find out if it has
The first Agile book recommended using the automatically assigned row id
of an object as a foreign key reference, as rails would automatically
interpret the attribute (for example) product_id as the table ''product''
and row ''id''.

multiple destinations in duration (survival) analysis
Hi,
I'm trying to estimate a (parametric) competing risks model in the context
of duration (or survival, if you wish) analysis. That is, instead of
studying the transition of subjects to "death", I wish to study the
transitions to multiple *destinations* (which is different from studying
multiple *durations*, or recurrent events). I am more interested in the
hazard function rather

Passenger problem
I''ve used the Slicehost Intrepid instructions (http://
articles.slicehost.com/ubuntu-intrepid) to install a new Ubuntu server
with Ruby, Rails and passenger.
Everything seems to be working OK, save for one thing: my application
only service up the files that are in its public folder.
The Passenger gem is installed. I''ve done this whole process before
without any problem. Any

256MB of RAM enough for ruby on rails and mysql?
Hi, I was wondering if 256MB of RAM is enough to run a ruby on rails
server and mysql server. My application does not do any complex
queries, but it does deal with quite a lot of data (potentially tables
as large as 100MB). The number of concurrent users should be low,
never more than 10. Currently I''m serving RoR using Lighttpd via
fastcgi. The only thing I''ve changed from the

Best Linux Distro for Rails App?
After a bad experience trying to get even the simplest Rails
application running at Lunarpages, I''m moving to Slicehost. Does
anyone have an opinion as to which of their Linux distros to use for a
fairly high-traffic Rails site? They offer CentOS, Debian 5, Fedora
(10 to 12), Gentoo, Red Hat EL 5, and Ubuntu (8 and 9).
While we''re on the subject, does anyone have any opinions as

Are there any HTML+CSS to PDF converters in ruby
Hi,
I tried PDF writer , but it doesn''t have HTML to PDF Converter.
Infact it is a PDF writer itself not a converter..
I''ve HTML pages with rich css or Strings with html+css such that
they are converted to PDF.
The idea is that web is all about RGB color model and when it comes
to Digital
Printing its all CMYK color model. My html page with rich css in

Online banking with Ruby on Rails?
I am wondering if it would be possible (and safe) to develop online
banking or other security-related applications with Ruby on Rails,
instead of using J2EE frameworks or .NET?
Are there any particular implications needed to write e-banking apps
with Rails? Security problems?
So... is anyone developing these types of applications with RoR?
Any advantage or disadvantage? Personal experiences are

Same CID on multiple users(friends9 in SIP.conf
Hi there.
Is it possible to have different sip users have the same CallerId number
in sip.conf.
I need this because we got multiple companies on this Asterisk box.
Company A's internal numbers:
CID: User:
1000 - User 1
2000 - User 2
3000 - User 3
4000 - User 4
Company B's internal numbers:
CID: User:
1000 - User 5
2000 - User 6
3000 - User 7
4000 - User 8
Is this allowed?

Ruby IO on brand new xserve with Leopard Server

grants for ZFS. Since all of the ZFS core contributors grants are set
to expire on 02-24-2009 we need to renew the members that are still

S+Finmetrics cointegration functions
Dear all,
S+Finmetrics has a number of very specilised functions. I am
particularly interested in the estimation of cointegrated VARs (chapter
12 of Zivot and Wang). In this context the functions coint() and
VECM() stand out. I looked at package "dse1", but found no comparable
functionality. Are there any other packages you could point me to? In
general, are there efforts for

image_tag keeping add ???? after the url it generates
hi, all,
I have a problem with image_tag, the url it generates keeps adding ???? at
the tail.
e.g.
src="/images/gicon.jpg?1153577588??????????"
src="/images/gicon.jpg?1153577588?????????????????"
I''ve checked the source code of image_tag, and couldn''t find any solution.
The ????
is appended to the "source" parameter before it goes to the real
