Newbie question about periodically_call_remote
Hi,
I''m new to Ruby on Rails (and Ruby itself). So far, I''ve been able to
find answers to most of my questions in the docs or mailing lists. One
thing I haven''t been able to find the answer to is how to stop a
periodically_call_remote call. My first Rails app is going to be a
front-end for our Ant-based build system at work. While the build is
running,

Initial load time when periodically_call_remote
When I do periodically_call_remote with e.g. :frequency => 30
after initial page load I have to wait 30 seconds until this partial
renders first time. Does anybody know how to make ROR to render partial
on web page load, and then start periodic calls every 30 seconds? I
tried to put
<div id=''mydiv''><%= render(:partial, :action=>''myaction'')

Call action & display nothing?
Can you do a periodically_call_remote to an action but then not display
any new view? say the new action was called ADD. I don''t want to do an
rhtml file for add, and I don''t want to render anything in the
controller... I want to leave the page as it is. How is this done?
Thanks,

strange bugs while using mongrel, while running in development (and also sometimes in production mode)
Following errors are taken from monrgrel running in development mode. It
complained routes.rb, no such file or directory and then sometimes i get
application.rb, no such file or directory.Doesn''t seem correct to me.
Though not so often, but even production servers throw these errors
sometimes, and i have no special routes setup or something. Its pretty much
default one, except few changes

Can I send a redirect_to() call to a periodically_call_remote() function?...
Hi,
I''m using Rails 1.1 and the periodically_call_remote() helper to
query the server for the progress of a long running action.
I''m using the excellent new RJS partials to send a page.replace_html()
to update the status information on the page--which works very
well.
When the action completes I''m also trying to send a redirect_to()
by the same approach--which

pass text_field to controller when using periodically_call_r
Hi. Can anyone help with this? In a view, I have a text_field_tag(
:mytextfield ). I would like to pass the current value of that
text_field_tag to a periodically_call_remote - something like
periodically_call_remote( :url => { :action => :do_it, :thetextval =>
:mytextfield.value } ) - Any idea how can I pass and/or access the value
of the text_field_tag in my do_it controller?

Pass parameters in periodically_call_remote?
Hi,
I am still new to RoR, so please bear with this newbie question. I
would like to have the application in view to press result back to the
controller when the periodically_call_remote is called. Right now,
this is the code in the view:
<div id="get_result"></div>
<%= periodically_call_remote(:update => ''get_result'',

that are open all the time.

OK I know whats happening. Your while loop completes and calls kill
on the worker before your task_progress controller method ever gets
called> So the worker is deleted and when you try to access it from
rails you get an error because there is no longer a worker at that
job key. The kill method is meant to be used within a worker that you
fire and forget. If you want to get the

Is there a huge performance difference between using multiple periodically_call_remote functions or one?
My application has multiple things on the interface that need to be
updated periodically. Some things every second, others not so much.
Some of these things are global, meaning they are on the interface at
all times, and some of these things are view specific. So what I
figured I would do is add the periodically_call_remote function for
the global elements and another one for the view

Q: periodically_call_remote ( how to make it execute just once? )
I posted this ealier on the web forums but noticed a similar question
about this function and one user responded to try this list instead. If
anyone can help I would greatly appreciate your suggestions.
Q:
Is there a way to use periodically_call_remote to run just one time
instead of every '':frequency'' seconds?
I tried putting the call inside the div container thinking it

realtime updates
hi all,
i''d like to updates some values on my site in realtime as other users
change them. So when one visitor moves a slider the others will see a
value updated in realtime. How should i go about this? One thing i
can do is use periodically_call_remote to check if values have
changed. But i think this will be a bit inefficient as i need to
update about 10 times a second. I i

Trouble using backgroundrb
Hi all,
I''m a newbie to backgroundrb and am having trouble integrating it into
my rails-app. I''m using namespaces to differentiate between the parts of
my app.
When I want to create a new worker, it seems that it cannot find the
worker object. Here''s my code:

for those with experience of Gruff module: suppose I want to send
image from server straight to the browser (as example on gruff web
site):

dynamic searchable fields, best practice?
I have a Lexicon model, and I want user to be able to create dynamic
feature to every lexicon.
And I have a complicate search interface that let user search on every
single feature (including the dynamic ones) belonged to Lexicon model.
I could have used a serialized text field to save all the dynamic
information if they are not for searching.
In case I want to let user search on all fields, I
