using trace() on S4 coerce method
I'm trying to use trace() on an S4 coerce method, but get the error Error in bindingIsLocked(what, whereM) : no binding for "coerce" What am I doing wrong? Example code follows. (I've googled the R mailing lists for "trace coerce" and "trace bindingisLocked" without finding anything relevant. Perhaps I should re-define the method in terms of an

retain class after merge
Dear All, is there a simple way to retain the class attribute of a column, if merging two data.frames? When merging the example data.frames form help(merge) I am unable to keep the class attribute as set before merging (see below). Two columns are assigned new classes before merge (myclass1, myclass2), but after merge the resulting column has class "character". best regards, Heinz

acts_as_ferret rebuilding issue with ferret 0.11.0
Hi, There is a problem with the way that acts_as_ferret verifies the index is valid. In ensure_index_exists it looks for a file named ''segments''. With the 0.11.0 release of ferret there is no file with this name. On my dummy application I have a ''segments.gen'' and ''segments_2y''. Changing the test to segments.gen fixes the problem that the

"tried to use a closed index"
Sorry in advance for the newbie question. Can''t get aaf going and can''t find similarly stuck folks on this forum. I''m running Rails on my local machine in development mode. I installed ferret 0.11.0 gem, and the most recent stable aaf plugin (as of today). I''m having trouble getting the most basic functionality working. In my model Recipe, I have:

Partial Class Definition if Ferret Server Not Running
When using a remote ferret server, if the ferret server is not running the acts_as_ferret class method will raise an exception. This causes the model class to only be partially defined, and therefore all use of that class in the rails application will explode until the rails process is restarted. This stems from the fact that ensure_index_exists is called on the server just before the

Is aaf multi_search broken?
Hi all, I want to use acts_as_ferret''s multi_search to search two model classes (Reviewable and Blog) at a time like @results = Reviewable.multi_search("jemen", [Blog]) and I''m always getting the error You have a nil object when you didn''t expect it! You might have expected an instance of Array. The error occurred while evaluating nil.map

Reducing dependency on remote ferret process
Hi. We use FerretDrb for search. If the ferret process is down, our entire application comes down the moment we try to save a model which is indexed. Is there a way to decouple this relationship such that we can somehow resume normal operations despite ferret being down and not index the model? Thanks. Morten

Fuzzy searching using act_as_ferret
Hello, My Ferret integration has gone quite well. I''m now returning all the results I need from two models using "id_multi_search" and combining the results in the view using a couple of partials. Is there any way that I can turn on fuzzy searching? Would fuzzy searching pick up basic spelling mistakes such as "Bnadit" instead of "Bandit" my experience

multi_search problems, Never go away!
Hello, I am trying to use the multi_search method, but I keep getting type error on nil objects, I send it [Model1,Model2] and it seems as though the class names keep getting clobbered and turn to nil, somewhere along the multi_index area. I tried to trace what was going on, but I got nothing, also, this only happens when there are actually hits(thank god, most of the time). Perhaps some insight?

Acts_as_ferret, DRb, 4 monrels and complete site lockups
Hi, I am having some serious problems with site that''s already live. It is using RoR 1.2, ferret 0.11.6 and most recent acts_as_ferret plugin. Most of the day, site is doing pretty well, is quick and search is reliable. But, at some point, it just "locks" and stops responding, one instance of mongrel after another. At the same time ferret DRb server starts eating lots of CPU.

Ferret returning too many results
Hi, I just upgraded from acts_as_ferret 0.2/Ferret 0.9.x to acts_as_ferret 0.3/ferret .10.9, and i''m getting a strange behavior: searches are returning far too many results, most of them superflous. i''ll paste in my code below, it''s pretty simple. i''m googling like mad, and going through both the source and the forums, and having trouble finding what could

Setting flash notice via javascript?
I am using a javascript to redirect to another action. Is there a way to set the flash [:notice] in the javascript? So when the javascript redirects, the new action/view picks up the flash[:notice]? (I suspect I may have to do something like url?notice=.....) ideas? thanks.

The ferret logs
Hi. We''ve had some problems with ferret not being able to load our classes (stack trace below for the curious). I nailed it down to a deployment issue, where an old instance of ferret drb was running. I don''t understand the details quite yet, but the result was the the old ferret was never shutdown during redeployment, and attempts were made to start up a new one. Anywho,

problems after gem update
Hi, I had ferret working wonderfully but i am regretting doing a gem update today. I had alot of trouble first installing it and was really happy to have it working. The upgrade was from 0.3.1 to 0.4.0. The problem is; in the rails console, >> @results = Book.find_by_contents("peter pan") => #<ActsAsFerret::SearchResults:0x487040c @total_hits=0, @results=[]> Its indexing

$$ is slooooow in IE
While $$ and getElementsByClassName are ridiculously speedy in Firefox (thanks to XPath), I''m finding both functions to be intolerably slow in IE. The page I''m working with has fewer than 1000 elements -- doesn''t seem THAT big -- and it''s still taking upwards of 4 seconds (!) to pick out the right ones. Are there documented problems with particular

Search Multiple Models
Hello folks, I have four models, each with their own separate index. Models = Articles, Blogs, MusicTracks, and MediaFiles I have individual searches within each section of the site working just fine, but I want to have a gloabl search that searches across all of them at the same time and returns the results ordered by score. Here''s how far I am now... def search query =
