10+ TB RAID experiences?
I'm looking for RAID options for at least 10 TB to attach to a Dell PowerEdge 2950 running RHEL 5 64-bit Server. The system will act as a single sign-on server for XP and Linux, thus storing user's data from mounted home directories exported from the server to various workstations. It may also house a database. I'll need a storage solution starting at least 10 TB. Most of the

Data recovery with superblocks?
It recently occurred to me, as I was partitioning a RAID with fdisk, that when I built the system, I was presented with a graphical utility that "magically" created the partitions. Now, using fdisk, I was reminded of being given superblocks. Although I haven't used data recovery techniques using superblocks, is there a way to retrieve the superblock numbers the OS has assigned

Single sign-on help requested
I have a RHEL5 Server and some dual-boot XP/CentOS 5 systems (Linux systems all 64-bit). All Linux is out-of-box, with all packages, minus international languages, installed. No patching has been done. On the server, I selected system-config-authentication and enabled LDAP for User Information, Kerberos, LDAP, and SMB for Authentication, and Shadow and MD5 Passwords, along with

PE2950, RAID 0, failed disk
I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with PERC 5/i, and 6 disks. Two disks have one logical volume via a hardware RAID 1 and consist of CentOS 5 64-bit; the remaining four comprise a logical volume via a hardware RAID 0, and is all user data. One drive on the RAID 0 went bad. I removed it while the system was on, tried a reboot, and the system hangs at RedHat Linux... Starting I tried to boot

diagnosing noise
Though quiet at the moment, my desktop sometimes sometimes makes a noise that I attribute to either a disk or a fan on its last legs. I'm looking for suggestions for distinguishing. For the disk, I expect I should use either hdparm of fsck. Even after reading the man page, I'm not sure how I would use hdparm. If I use fsck, what should I take as evidence of a bad drive? A good drive? Is

C5 64-bit and software RAID 6?
I have a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with 6 SAS disks and a PERC 5/i controller what won't do RAID 6. I plan to have 2 drives as RAID 1 for the OS, and the remaining 4 as RAID 6. Granted the PERC can do RAID 1, I'm tempted to do everything via software RAID. Thus, if anything goes wrong with the controller, I just need to obtain a new SAS controller and I'm back up. I learned my lesson

drive to standby after idle timeout?
I'd like to to put the hard drives in standby mode during periods of no activity. I'm just running a file server plus a couple small things on a Qube 3 from home, although the web stuff will increase it's still minimal. On my NetBSD systems I can use atactl to do this via: mount -u -o async, noatime, nodevmtime / mount -u -o async, noatime /usr atactl wd0 setidle 5 [wait a time]

One disk speed problem [SOLVED], and a question on hdparm
I believe I've posted before about one of the speed issues we were having, of backups taking many, many hours that should *not* take that long. My manager and I finally nailed it down to the h/d itself. Identical boxes, and he tried a backup of one system which took under two hours, while the same regular one rand nearly six. I'd been googling on and off for weeks, and this morning, ran

how to get the source for installed RPM (CUPS)
I would like to change a few things in CUPS, but I would prefer to use the source for the version of CUPS that I already have installed using yum. Mostly because I'm quite happy with the way it works except a few details. Is there a way to get the source using yum or should I go to http://www.cups.org/software.php and get it from there ? The version I installed with yum is 1.1.22 and on
