Specify and validate requirements on an ActiveRecord association
Looking for some guidance/support on what feels like might not be an uncommon use-case. `User.has_many accounts` `User.has_many payment_methods` `Account.belongs_to :user` `Account.belongs_to :payment_method` `PaymentMethod.has_many :accounts` There are lots of `Accounts`. When I (a `User`) want to assign accounts to a `PaymentMethod`, I really don''t want to scope against all of them,

validates_associated bug?
i seem to be experiencing a bug where rails tells me that my organization object''s associated credit card is invalid (activerecord validation-wise invalid), when i know it to be valid. this happens only if i tell the organization to validate_associated :credit_card. i know the associated credit card is valid, because a) that credit_card object itself throws no validation errors, and b)

Rails 3 / ActiveModel for Credit Card information?
When submitting billing information in the past I''ve always used attr_accessor for credit card details as they should not be saved in the database. In addition I always end up storing the card expiration date so that the date form helper works correctly. With Active Model it seems logical to create a CreditCard class to hold this data instead. **1st issue.** It seems there still

Problem w/ActionWebService and Inheritance in Service Params
I have a service method that takes a PaymentMethod which can either be a CreditCard or a PayPal account. When I request the service and pass one or the other it always comes over as a PaymentMethod; the service doesn''t seem to know that the parameter is really a CreditCard or PayPal. Here''s some sample code that illustrates what I''m talking about more concretely:

Documentation for generate controller
I can find the API documentation, but where is the documentation for the standard generators. The wiki has 3rd party generators- but I want to know specifically what generate controller does, and how it differs from generate scaffold, and what other generators there are. Where is this succinctly documented? -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

reading VERY large binary files
Hello, I am trying to read in elements out of a very large binary file ... the total file is 4 gigs. I want to select rows out of the file, and the current procedure I run works but is prohibitively slow (takes more than a day to run and still won't complete). Is there any faster way to accomplish this? My current procedure looks like this: readHH <- function(file_name,

random exception driving me crazy: SecurityError (Insecure: can't modify array)
Hi all, I''m running into a very strange but incredibly annoying problem that I just can''t seem to solve. The exception is occurring from a seemingly innocuous line in my code, a simple ''logger.warn("some debug information")''. The backtrace follows: SecurityError (Insecure: can''t modify array)

Stubbing Model.new w/ block?
Ok, I followed the advice of the list and moved more code into my model from my controller. When developing tests for this new code, I ran into a problem... My model code creates a receipt object and sets some values on it: @receipt = Receipt.new do |r| r.x = 1 r.y = 2 # etc end I wanted to be able to stub out Receipt.new so that I could set expectations on the methods called on the

rsync output -vv differs with dry-run option
I'm trying to figure out if a file has changed since the last rsync call. I use the following command line: rsync -cvv /mnt/xxx/vol1/dbase/100/kunden.dbf /mnt/label | grep "^total: " | sed -e 's/.* data=//' This gives a 0 if the file is unchanged and the file size if the file has changed. Adding the "dry-run" option "n" to the command line always

ecdf with lots of ties is inefficient (PR#7292)
Full_Name: Martin Frith Version: R-2.0.0 OS: linux-gnu Submission from: (NULL) (134.160.83.73) I have large vectors containing 100,000 to 20,000,000 numbers. However, they only contain a few hundred *distinct* numbers (e.g. positive integers < 200). When I do ecdf(v), it either runs out of memory, or it succeeds, but when I plot the ecdf with postscript, the output is unnecessarily bloated

Cannot create auth-master file
Hi all, I'm trying to get postfix and dovecot working nicely together to process and store mail for both local (system) on one domain and virtual users and a few different domains. I've got postfix up and running quite nicely, but am having a few problems with Dovecot. Every time postfix tried to delivery a message to a virtual user using dovecot I get an error like the following in

autosave no longer a valid option for belongs_to?
The Rails API doc (api.rubyonrails.org) says that :autosave is still a valid option for belongs_to in the latest version of Rails. However, a look at the activerecord/lib/active_record/associations.rb (line 1590) reveals that it is not in the @@valid_keys_for_belongs_to_association array. I also noticed that it''s not in the ActiveRecord API doc (ar.rubyonrails.org). Does anyone have any

Anova's in R
Hello. I am looking for some help using anova's in RGui. My experiment ie data, has a fixed burning treatment (Factor A) 2 levels, unburnt/burnt. Nested within each level of Factor A are 2 random sites (Factor B). output validations errors form causing type error?

Compounding global and individual settings in ssh-config files?
Hello everyone, my workplace has gotten the idea of centrally maintaining a file in ssh_config syntax so that employees do not need to discover every new machine and configure it on their own. Since it's a case of "let's get started now, and properly think it through later", right now, a typical entry might look like > Host [product]-[Customer] > Hostname

OT: Displaying errors on credit-card processing
Hi, This question isn''t Rails-specific, but since Basecamp (& the family of premium 37signals apps) have the best implementation of credit-card processing I''ve seen, I''m hoping maybe DHH could lend an answer. Of course, anyone is welcome to chime in! # Some background Our nonprofit is building a Rails-driven store and donation center and our developer is
