Not much code to talk about here, quite simply I have an attribute
that is serialzied and when I update it, irb shows the object and my
methods run on it as it were indeed so. Though when I reload it

design recommendations for authenticating users with lots of different attributes..?
I''ve been struggling a bit trying to figure out the best way to
design/implement a system with authentication/authorization, and was
hoping some of you may be able to offer some advice..
At the moment, I have a system with 4 different types of users -
clients, administrators, sales_reps, and public_users. I''m using
"Authorizing Users with Roles" from the Rails Recipes

Site Navigation With Polymorphic Has Many Through
Hi, seem to keep running into a wall here. I can''t find any resources on
site navigation that can deal with any model being in the nav, allow
nesting, and can dynamically update.
So I thought about it for a while, and decided on a MenuItems class, which
contained the position of the child in relation to it''s siblings, where the
parent and the child were polymorphic. Then a given

ActiveRecord::AssociationTypeMismatch
I have the requirement to empty the association records and add the
association records as new (as below).
@task = Task.find(params[:task_id])
@task.task_users = []
params[:ids].split(", ").each do |court_user_id|
task_user = TaskUser.new(:court_user_id => court_user_id)
@task.task_users << task_user
end
@task.save
This is not working. Following error is thrown.

acts_as_whatever
Hi there,
I love the acts_as_* family that rails uses. I''ve also found I can
create something similar by dropping the following code into my
activerecord classes:
class MyClass < ActiveRecord::Base
class << self
alias_method :count_with_unapproved, :count
end
def self.find(*args)
options = extract_options_from_args!(args)
if options[:conditions].nil?
options[:conditions] =

Having a problem adding a foreign key
I keep getting this exception "SQLite3::SQLException: no such
column: books.user_id: SELECT "books".* FROM "books" WHERE
("books".user_id = 4)" ,which sounds like there is no user_id in books
table.So i just installed foreigner plugin and added "
t.integer :user_id, :null => false" and
"add_foreign_key(:books, :users)" in book

Did rails or shoulda go insane on the inflection of 'taxes'?
I have a model ''xp_jurisdiction_taxes'' which rails (3) created correctly.
Another model ''xp_jurisdiction_states'' has many :xp_jurisdiction_taxes.
In my spec I am using a shoulda helper to test the association but get the
following error. BTW, greped the whole project just in case and the string
''taxi'' exists nowhere.

The M in ORM
Hi everyone,
I am attempting to connect an already existing mysql database with
Rails. For This I can''t use the traditional "generate scaffold" and
"rake db:migrate" because (I think), I''ll loose the data already
existing in that database table. So what I did was, I generated a
scaffold for my table, and instead of running db:migrate, I added a

migrations :timestamp becomes :datetime in mySql
For some reason whenever I try and create a timestamp column with
migrations and mysql I get a datetime column instead. That''s kind of
annoying because I want the column to update every time the row gets
changed. Is this a bug, or is there something I can do about it?
(Obviously I can manually change my mysql table, but that kind of
defeats the point of migrations!)
In my migration

belongs_to :users

Problem with schema_db_import on Site5?
Hello,

this is to first do
rake db_schema_dump and then copy it to the host and do
rake db_schema_import.
I use mySQL Ver 14.7 Distrib 4.1.14, for pc-linux-gnu (i686) using readline
