unit test question
In development and production, I''ve got postgresql constraints that
prevent deleting a CaseManager if there is a Client that belongs to that
CaseManager.
In unit tests...and obviously in my testing db, those restrictions don''t
get added.
Is it wrong to test for deleting dependent records in unit tests?

foreign keys and referential integrity
Sans rails my normal approach to handling this would be to enforce it in
the database and when a database operation failed I''d try to validate
the model to produce an error message. It''s always served me pretty
well.
Rails expects you to validate before commiting but of course this does
nothing to guarantee referential integrity. It''s perfectly possible for

Migrations & Unit Testing: Possible Bug in Rails?
I recently started using migrations to create the schema of a Rails
project I am working on. The database I am using for this project is
MySQL. The initial migration creates the table and also includes a
number of execute statements (to do some things like setting primary
keys, autoincrement on some columns and other messy voodoo).
Running "rake migrate" creates the database with no

Validating that a foreign key is present and ok
How do I validate that a model object''s attribute is a valid foreign
key? The problem is, I can''t check if the attribute is a valid foreign
key if the attribute doesn''t even exist.
For example, every employee must be in a department. In the following
code, if an employee''s department_id is not present then
Department.find_by_id(department_id) might cause

save new model with child model
Hi,
I am having a problem saving a new model that has an associated child
model. If a new ticket is being created and will have one comment to
go with it then I tried this in my action
@ticket = Ticket.new(params[:ticket])
@comment = Comment.new(params[:comment])
@ticket.comments << @comment
if @ticket.save
@notice = "Ticket added. Thanks for

Unit tests hitting development database, not testing...
I''ve been working through the AWDWR book (both hard copy first edition
and "beta book" pdf of second and I''m running into some problems when
running unit tests.
Integration tests and functional tests are behaving correctly and are
operating against the test database. However unit tests try to operate
against the development database and fail.

problems testing on 1.1 and postgresql
Hi,
I get errors doing this:
1) createdb myapp_test
2) rake db:test:clone_structure
3) rake test:units
rake aborted!
PGError: ERROR: relation "matches" already exists
I''m using the :sql schema format because there are some problems with
postgres and the :ruby schema format
config.active_record.schema_format = :sql
It seems rake test:units is trying to create the tables

validates_numericality_of positive integer
Hi,
What is the simplest way to validate a positive integer?
validates_numericality_of :foo, :integer_only => true
how do I add the positive part? Do I need another validation statement
for pattern matching or do I have to write a validate() funciton for
my model?
Thanks,
Peter

SQLite primary key schema
So after successfully getting the test SQLite db to run from memory, I
tried running some tests but found that somewhere in the schema
translation from Postgres (my devel database) and SQLite Rails fails
to properly set the ''id'' column, which breaks all kinds of things.
Take as an example my ''users'' table. In Postgres the schema is

Foreign key constraints, fixtures, and rake task
I''ve got a spec that loads a fixture in the "before" block. This works
fine running scripts/spec, but when I run rake spec instead, I get:
ActiveRecord::StatementInvalid in ''User in fixture :quentin with an IM
service but no IM name should be invalid''
Mysql::Error: Cannot delete or update a parent row: a foreign key
constraint fails

Weird ActiveRecord Foreign Key Problem
Hello to all,
I ran into a weird problem with an ActivRecord. I have a table named
"build_order" with a column named "type" that is a foreign key to a
table called "building_type". In a controller I try to read all the
build_orders with "BuildOrder.find :all" and get the following error and
stack trace:
(eval):1:in `instance_eval'': compile

Database Foreign Key - Basic question
Hi all
I''m still waiting on my Agile Rails book to arrive - in the meantime ...
As an exercise I''m making a Help Desk application.
If I have a Problems table with two foreign keys to a People table,
how do I set up my models, problems_controller list method, and then
simply display say my problem submitter person? Here is what I have so
far:

currency conversion webservice in a rails app?
Hi,
I''m interested in using a currency conversion web service in my rails
app. Does anyone have a free service that they use and like? I found
this one
http://www.webservicex.net/WS/WSDetails.aspx?CATID=2&WSID=10
I''ve tried to make a simple, plain Ruby script to connect to this and
get a conversion rate without success.
How do I integrate a webservice into my rails app? I

Testing with foreign keys
I''m looking for a plugin/whatever for preloading fixtures, to run
tests with FKs defined.
Specifying load order just doesn''t work for me, I need to purge the
test db, load all fixtures, and only then create the FK constraints.
Any suggestions?

Can a route require POST or GET? / REST problem with routing
Hi,
A store front a customer wants to GET /product/5/show. But for the
application this is really GET /cart_item/new/5 or even better
/cart_item/new?cart_item[product_id]=5
When the customer clicks add_to_cart they POST /product/5/show so that
the url doesn''t confuse the user when any validation errors occur. But
for the applicaiton this should be POST

mariadb: How to delete foreign key constraint from non-existing table?
Hi,
somehow phpmyadmin messed things up when I was trying to modify a table.
The table disappeared, and now it's impossible to re-create it:
MariaDB [time]> create table etikettend_metainfo (userID integer(6)
unsigned, stationsnummer integer(4) unsigned, primary key (userID));
ERROR 1005 (HY000): Can't create table `time`.`etikettend_metainfo`

switching to edge rails
Hi,
I want to start using has_many :through. I think that eventually I''ll
be removing all uses has_and_belongs_to_many from my project.
Here is my situation
I''m using SVN
I want to use edge rails
Reading the wiki about switching to edge rails[1], I can''t figure out
which combination of subsections I must perform.

problems getting ActionMailer working (on server)
Hi,
I''ve read the Agile Rails book''s chapter on ActionMailer a few times.
Seems pretty straight forward. Unfortunately I can''t get my
application to actually send mail.
I uploaded my application to the web server and tried to get a mail
message sent. Nothing happened. I looked in the log file and it says

Assigning to the foreign key on a belongs_to association
I''ve encountered what seems like an odd omission in the behaviour of
belongs_to associations: if you assign to the foreign key attribute,
it doesn''t update the associated object (or mark a previously loaded
one as stale) until you explicitly save or reload it.
Let''s say we have a Company model, which belongs_to :city :
