[Linux] Samba as Wins Server and Domain Controller
As much as I love Samba, OpenSores, Linux and apple pie, setting Samba as an NT domain controller used to be a bit of a hack that required a lot of shoe horning, and a lot of reading, and experimentation. Get the books, sign up for the support email list and be prepared for a bumpy ride. The problem is that certain things *should* work a certain way, but such is not always the case and you

Oracle on NetApp
Hello, Anyone using or tested Oracle (OLTP load) on NetApp? Connected via Fibre Channel not NFS. Performance is good or should we better stay with "classic" SAN storage like HP EVA or similar boxes from EMC or Hitachi? In EMC test papers NetApp does not look good. In NetApp papers - vice versa. :) So I'm somewhat confused. I remember someone in this list saying that

Problems when linking to R shared library
Folks, I'm fairly sure that I'm doing something stupid, but I'm getting a few really strange results from *some* of the distributions, but by no means all, when I link directly to the R shared library. I've tried this on both Windows with the precompiled Mingw binary of R-2.5.0 (compiling my code with MinGW-3.4.2), and by building R-2.5.0 on Mandriva Linux with gcc-3.4.4 and

How to extract partial predictions, package mgcv
Dear package mgcv users, I am using package mgcv to describe presence of a migratory bird species as a function of several variables, including year, day number (i.e. day-of-the-year), duration of survey, latitude and longitude. Thus, the "global model" is: global_model<-gam(present ~ as.factor(year) + s(dayno, k=5) + s(duration, k=5) + s(x, k=5) + s(y, k=5), family =

LPRng question
<It seems that the print command is trying to find the printer at location 'localhost'. Since this is a network printer it is not at localhost is it?> Yeah, the error messages made no sense to me either! Well, like I said earlier: < The IP address of this printer is 10.1.1.192. I call this printer nero, and have it listed in my /etc/hosts file> Here is a copy of part of my

openssh 2.1.1p4-1: port number data in known_hosts: suggestion
Before I went to the trouble of implementing this feature and sending in a patch, I want to see what the general reaction would be... I allow ssh through my firewall under certain circumstances. My firewall is a Linux box running ipchains, but it could just as easily be any firewall that can forward external ports to internal ports. My internal network uses non-published addresses, so I forward

R-beta: pictex() under Windows 95
Got an error trying to run the PicTeX graphics driver in Version 0.50 Beta (Sept 29, 1997) of R under Windows 95. When I executed pictex() I got the following error message: Error in device("pictex", as.character(c(file, bg, fg)), c(width, height, : unable to start device pictex > It looks like the command exists but not the code to implement it. corrupted .RData
Hello All, I'm suffering from a corrupted .RData which I believe arose from a shutdown while the session was in the process of saving the image. I wonder if theres something I can do to recover the data? (the fatal error message is contained below) Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of new code prior to my latest backup, which I would hate to rewrite. kind regards andy

Re: follow-up
.RData files are *not* machine-independent! Thus, it doesn't mean the file is corrupted if it won't load on another machine. If the work in the file is quite valuable, you may wish to send email to r-devel at stat.math.ethz.ch where the R hackers hang out. [I used to hang out there, but have been trying to work on my dissertation instead! The patch I gave was one I needed to load my

Re: ocfs performance question
Well, you are the second person who has complained about the performance of OCFS with the PERC controller. Best option would be to contact DELL. We are in contact with them... as in, they inform us of any issues they have with linux/ocfs on their hardware. As we do not have this particular hardware inhouse, all we can only speculate as to what the issue is. Things to look for ==> output
