Optimistic locking and update_attributes: not working?
Hi all,
I''ve searched the forumns, but I can''t seem to find an answer to this
one. I''m having trouble getting optimistic locking (OL) to work in my
app, even though all of the pieces are there:
* table has lock_version column, with default of 0 (zero)
* lock_version column is being incremented by the first update (but the
second doesn''t catch it)

Stale object errors
I''m running into a couple of stale object problems with methods that
at first glance appear fairly atomic - eg Message.update(params[:id],
{:body => params[:value]})
Of course, Rails has to instantiate the object & validate it before
it updates the database, so it''s not actually atomic, hence the
occasional staleobject error.
So I''ve been wondering about

[PATCH server] Fixed db-omatic so it doesn't die due to an unhandled ActiveRecord::StaleObjectError exception.
The error is caused by the save! method updating an object that another
thread (most likely in taskomatic) already updated.
In the case of this race condition, we retry saving. However, a proper fix
would involve fixing the locking.

When to use optimistic locking?
Hi All,
I''m having some trouble deciding when and how to implement optimistic
locking.
Let''s say I have a multiuser Rails app, and let''s say it stores,
among other things "vital" customer information.
The standard methods created by the Rails generate scaffold script
look like this:
def edit
@customer = Customer.find(params[:id])
end

ActiveRecord: Attribute Setter for belongs_to relation attribute
Hi,
I m trying to link into the process of setting an belongs_to attribute
in my model. Unfortunetly, it does not seem to be as easy as for
"normal" attributes.
I ve tried the following:
class Treatment < ActiveRecord::Base
belongs_to :drug
def drug=(new_value)
''my stuff
super new_value
end
However, that does not work. Ive also tried self[:drug] =

Session Based Record Locking - Solutions?
All,
I''ve written a simple job/opportunity tracking database app via RoR.
I have about 10 internal users.
Sometimes 2 people will want to update the same record at more or less
the same time and they collide.
In particular user 1 may edit a record, then get distracted, and
finally an hour later they click save.
During that hour user 2 may have pulled up the record, edited it, and

Samba v3.0.23c + FreeBSD 6.1 - Failed to set servicePrincipalNames
Hello,
We recently upgraded to the latest Samba3 version v3.0.23c. If the Samba
system and the AD belong to the same domain, I am able to perform a 'net

credential.
However if the Samba system and the AD belong to different domain, I can

The MYDOMAIN PDC has the unix identity mapping feature installed, so I

So far, the field status can have values like valid, invalid, locked

[PATCH 0/2] libxl/xl: two more coverity related fixes
The first patch is a leftover from the switch to
libxl__create_qemu_logfile, and while there it also handles possible
errors when opening /dev/null.
The second one is a fix for the issues present in do_daemonize.
Thanks, Roger.

Implementing trees in R
Hi all,
I am rather new to R. Recently I have been trying to implement some
tree algorithms in R. I used lists to model tree nodes. I thought
something like this would work:
parent <- list();
child <- list();
parent$child1 <- child;
child$parent <- parent;
When I tried to check whether a node is its parent's first child
using "if

how to add a child to a child in XML
Big thanks. newXMLNode works great. Wonder why it is not included in the documentation.
There is newXMLDoc and newXMLNamespace, but no mention of newXMLNode.

how to add a child to a child in XML
Hi,
XML doesn't use the `$` to access child nodes. Instead use either `[name]` to get a list of children of that name or `[[name]]` to get the just the first child of that name encountered in the genealogy. Thus for your example...
> root$child1
NULL
> root[['child1']]
<child1 name1="A" name2="B" name3="C"/>
On the other hand, you might

how to add a child to a child in XML
Hi,
It's a reasonable question. The answer is that it actually is included, but there are many instances across packages where multiple functions are documented on a single help page. The following brings up such a page... (for XML_3.98-1.9)
> library(XML)
> ?newXMLNode
You can see the same on line...

how to add a child to a child in XML
Just to clarify and hopefully catch the attention of the maintainer:
The newXMLNode function is not mentioned in:
https://cran.r-project.org/web/packages/XML/XML.pdf
which supposedly describes all functions in the package.

How can I take/revert snapshot of a VHD image
Hi there,
I''m running several VMs within Xen, and now I''m trying to create/revert
snapshots of my VMs.
Along with Xen and blktap2, another utility, vhd-util is also delivered,
and according to its description, i guess I can use it to create/revert
VM snapshots.
To create a snapshot is actually easy, I just call
|vhd-util snapshot -n aSnapShot.vhd -p theVMtoBackup.vhd

proper way to ensure atomic model changes
Hi!
Say we have a rails active-record-based model called "instance" which
can have different states - STOPPED, RUNNING, STARTING_UP,
SHUTTING_DOWN, etc...
There is a method #start which changes the instance state to
STARTING_UP only if it is STOPPED.
def start
if self.state == STOPPED
self.state = STARTING_UP
self.save
...
end
end
As you understand if we have multiple
