My Development Environment is WAY too slow (blame Vista)
I''ve broken away -- partially at least -- from the dark side. I''m a long-time MS dev. I heard about Ruby and RR from Scott Hanselman (http://www.hanselman.com/blog/). He''s a great blogger on things in the MS world but he''s always provided a broader perspective. And he found great beauty in Ruby and RR and said as much. I had the opportunity to try out

Hello List, Label me a newb, but how do you install Rails 3 on your Mac? New release RubyStack for Windows / includes git
Hi, Just thought I would let the list know of a new release of RubyStack for Windows, since there is a lot of overlap in functionality and may be of interest to some of you also using OS X and Linux. Please let me know if it is inappropriate. Like InstantRails, RubyStack is an open source, self-contained distribution of Ruby on Rails that is easy to install and use. It runs on Windows, Linux and

I downloaded rails-2.3.2.zip. How do I install it?
I''ve installed Ruby using the one-click installer for Windows. As said, I downloaded the zip package for RoR and unzipped it to my local hard disk. There is no main install.rb for RoR, but there is one install.rb for Actionmailer, Actionpack, Activerecord, ActiveResource, Activesupport. How to I install RoR then? Should I install each module separately by running ''ruby

re-installing a package without removing it?
Hello, I've just noticed that the file /etc/ha.d/resource.d/drbddisk, which belongs to package drbd-8.0.6-1.el5.centos, is missing from one of my test machines: # rpm --verify drbd S.5....T c /etc/drbd.conf missing /etc/ha.d/resource.d/drbddisk I'm looking at this as an opporunity to learn something about RPM which bugged me for a while - in Debian, aptitude and apt-get provide

Unable open raw socket in CentOS 5 - SE Linux and kernelcapability interaction?
The raw socket option in the kernel only allows privileged processes to open them. Selinux controls which privileged processes have the right to. To allow an unprivileged process to access a raw socket you will need to write a proxy daemon that runs privileged and is allowed in selinux to create a raw socket. This daemon can then provide a unix socket to unprivileged processes whose access can

Improving RPM packaging for R; ideas gathered from the Debian folks
Hi, everybody. I've got some Centos Linux systems and some Ubuntu Linux systems. R's basically the same in either place, but the packaging of R for Debian systems seems better to me than it is on Fedora/Redhat/Centos. I joined R-sig-debian and we talk about package management issues there sometimes. One of the really handy R packaging ideas they have is to customize R environment so

Running without anvil?
Hi, I'm using dovecot as a local mail store on my laptop using preauth tunneling. It turns out I almost don't even need to start dovecot at all; the only reason it needs to be running is so that FTS indexing can be invoked. And because I don't want it to run any services, I can run it as an unprivileged user, so long as I turn them all off: # We don't want to serve any

mac_portacl and automatic port allocation
Hello, I really like the idea behind mac_portacl but I find it difficult to use it because of one issue. When an unprivileged program binds to high automatic port with a call to bind(2) and port number set to 0 the system chooses the port to bind to itself. This mechanismus is used by number of programs, most commonly by ftp clients in active mode. Unfortunately this 0 is checked by the

Installing on CentOS
Hi, I''m trying to install RedCloth on CentOS. It came with ruby 1.8.5 pre-installed so I installed rubygems-1.2.0 since that seemed compatible (later versions require ruby 1.8.6). All looks good but when I try: [root at dev4 rubygems-1.2.0]# gem install RedCloth ERROR: could not find gem RedCloth locally or in a repository Can anyone tell me what I''m missing? Do I need to

Aptitude vs. apt
Hi all, I need to write an aptitude provider for Debian. How should it differ from apt? Can I just s/apt/aptitude/g, or do I need to do something else? Any other weird behaviours I should look for or whatever? I''ll make it a subclass of apt (and since Deb seems to specify aptitude as the default now, maybe apt should subclass aptitude), so any dpkg answerfile work should work on
