Custom Validations
Does anyone how to create a validation that:
validates_presence_of :a OR :b
I.e. :a OR :b must be present.
I thought this would probably be possible with some kind of validation
callback, e.g.:
def check_a_or_b_is_set
return (a or b)
end
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Rob

Provide missing image
Hi
I have an application where people can upload avatar-like images to
the site. When I show the images I want to show a placeholder image if
no image has been uploaded for that user.
I was thinking of overloading the image_tag helper to check for
existance and provide :default => "path/to/default/image" for the
image to show in case the primary one does not exist.
So my questions

Validations continued
I simply can''t figure this out. I have been reading and re-reading Agile
book and wiki.rubyonrails.org - all sorts of validation methods and
still, it doesn''t work.
Controller code
def create
@client = Client.new(params[:client])
if @client.save!
flash[:notice] = ''Client was successfully created.''

how to do validations in non-AR classes and I cant find it any more.
Anyone have a link?
Thanks,
Trevor

Validating Existing Models
I''ve got a user object which has quite a few attributes mapped to the
database. As of right now I''ve got some validations in the model like:
validates_presence_of :password, :message => "You must specify a valid
password."
validates_confirmation_of :password, :message => "Password doesn''t match
the confirmation."
validates_presence_of

I have a form that submits data to multiple models.
I have

validates_associated :contacts, :notes
validates_presence_of :first_name
validates_presence_of :last_name
class Contact < ActiveRecord::Base

Validation that works in the controller
Hi,
Is there a way of validating input inside the controller? or an equivalent to
ActiveRecord::Validations::ClassMethods.validates_presence_of ?
Cheers,

Rails validations app specific problems
Hi all,
I have a unique workflow where it''s making the use of validations
difficult.
My app is for internal use in my company and I have a funky
implementation (inspired by the e-commerce Railscasts episodes) of a
cart. I have products which when I "add to cart" creates an order with a
state of "incomplete". The product is a line item of my order. Hope that

ActiveRecord validations and FormBuilder
Hi,
I''m writing my own FormBuilder and I wanted to put an asterisk or
something next to any required fields. The Builder has access to the
AR object, is there any method I can call on the AR object that will
tell me whether or not a particular field is required? Failing that,
can I access the complete list of validations so I can look through
it for instances of

How To Validate Boolean Form Field
Hello all.
I''ve got the following in my model:
class Individual < ActiveRecord::Base
validates_presence_of :first_name, :last_name, :street, :city,
:state, :zip
validates_acceptance_of :AZ_resident, :message => "You must be an
Arizona resident."
end
The AZ_resident field is present and defined as boolean (PostgreSQL
8.1), but validation will not occur.

How do you display validation errors when validating child models?
I can''t seem to figure out how to get child validation error messages
to display. I''m going through the simple blog example DHH uses in his
video. In the example, a comment belongs_to a post. Validating posts
works fine and the errors are displayed as they should be. When I try
to validate a comment using:
validates_presence_of :summary
It does the proper validation by not

Ignoring Validations In An Admin Tool?
I have the following validation on and ''Order'' model:
validates_presence_of :order_lines, :message => ''missing one or more
products.'', :on => :save
Ok, great. An order has to have products. Ok.
Problem is, there are some old orders that don''t have lines (don''t ask) and
in the admin tool we need to be able to work on these orders.

prevent orphan records
If I have
belongs_to :user
Do I need to have
validates_presence_of :user_id
?
Does Rails validate the presence of :user_id automatically if I have
belongs_to :user?
In other words, does Rails prevent against creating orphan records that
belong to non-existent users?
Thanks.

Validate some fields only on object creation, not update
I''m having a problem with my User model. Originally I had alot of
validation, including this:
validates_presence_of :password_confirmation, :password
validates_length_of :password, :within => 4..50
validates_confirmation_of :password
However, this made it impossible to edit a user without setting his
password, which I don''t want. So I tried to isolate the above
validations

Problems with multiple ActiveRecords and Validations
Hi all,
I am a RoR newbie and have the following scenario set up:
There are 2 ActiveRecords involved, the first one being "User", the
second one being "Visibility".
The corresponding users table holds address informations regarding a
User. The visibilities table holds visibility settings for the
individual columns of the users table (i.e. firstname, lastname, country

validating both sides of a has_one relationship breaks pickle/machinist tests
A lot has been posted about validation issues with associations,
however, I don''t see this issue addressed specifically.
ex:
class Foo
has_one :schedule, :dependent => :destroy
validates_presence_of :schedule
class Schedule
belongs_to :foo
validates_presence_of :foo_id
this creates a circular dependency that breaks test frameworks like
pickle and machinist.

Split Validations?
I have a single table that two people enter data into. Person A creates
the record and I need to specify certain required fields in his form.
Person B has a separate form and she fills in additional fields and I
need to specify that some of these are required.
Since the data is all in one table and since the validations are in the
model, won''t Rails complain when person A tries to

validates_format_of :email,
