hvm performance
Hi I''ve been running xen with linux guests for a while now and thought I''d try windows as I have a new server. All seemed to go fine except performance is *horrible* - I''m currently installing Win2003 SP2 and it''s been running over 12 hours (thank god for vnc) - each individual file is taking between 3 and 4 seconds each. Server is an intel E6600 with

Whine in dual core Windows PC if R uses full CPU capacity
Dear R-developers, the following may seem a weird question for R-devel – I try anyway, because it does seem to be related to usage of R and R's way of interacting with the hardware. When running R (2.4.0) on my new dual core Windows XP system (Intel Core 2 Duo E6600, Mainboard ASUS P5B, BeQuiet Power Unit), I observe various types of sounds (not related to fans) when running at full

OT: a very big problem with ipsec-tools on CentOS5 (SOLVED)
Buf ... Solved. Problem was that /etc/pam.d/racoon doesn't exists (I found this tip on NetBSD ipsec pages). Simply I have copied /etc/pam.d/passwd to /etc/pam.d/racoon and now all works as expected. Many thanks for your help Ross. Ross S. W. Walker wrote: > > I think it might just use another one like /etc/pam.d/remote > cause I audited the package and it wasn't there.

Will this work? server+centOS5+100users?
I am an experienced MS administrator of W2003 servers & Exchange systems. I have 5+ years UNIX mid-level experience but not in centOS. Grounded in SCO UNIX (the real SCO UNIX). We want to use CentOS on a recently grave yarded Dell poweredge 400SC server. This is a P4 3.0 Ghz, w/4GB memory, 2 SATA 250 GB disks. We want to use this server w/CentOS5, to provide file and print resources to 100

CentOS5 pam_mkhomedir
I have a problem creating homedirs on the fly. Since RHEL5 / CentOS5 you have to use pam_oddjob_mkhomedir instead of pam_mkhomedir. Everything is working (the homedir is created) but two things. First on every logon I get the following error message, and I don't know how to fix it: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown: The name com.redhat.oddjob was not provided by any .service files

Centos5 Webcam/Video input/output
We have been exploring the possibilities using Centos5 for video. Video and Audio Streaming sounds like great fun. Subject is pretty new to us here and well there was nothing else to do but take the dive. After much time beating our heads against the wall and covering the planet google'ing and hitting the books trying to get a webcam to work. I am wondering if it wouldn't be better just

Equivalent to Solaris Zones?

Benchmarking
I wasted too much time today doing this, but they do show a few interesting things: 1) mmap_disable=yes is faster than mmap_disable=no. I didn't expect this. I'm not yet sure why this is, but possibly because then it updates the mail index by reading the changes from dovecot.index.log, instead of reopening and re-mmaping dovecot.index. At least that's the biggest difference between

Speed up R
Dear R Users, I hope that there is someone who has an experience with a problem that I describe below and will help me. I must buy new desktop computer and I'm wondering which processor to choose if my only aim is to speed up R. I would like to reduce a simulation time - sometimes it takes days. I consider buying one of them (I'm working under Win XP 32 bit): 1. Intel Core2 Duo E6700

rolling your own kernel - guidelines?
Let's say I want to use a much newer kernel - even one from the future, such as the upcoming 2.6.24. :-) What would y'all smart folks do in this case, in order to avoid any possible nasty consequences? Would you import the config file from the original CentOS5 kernel into the new kernel, and let the kernel deal with the differences? I.e. have the old configuration as some sort of
