Problem with ONE of the Special German Characters
Dear List,
I have data which contain the special German characters "ä", "ö", "ü" etc. After reading the
text files into R those characters are displayed strangely, e. g. "ä" is "ä". The first step is to
replace those with their typical transcription, e. g. "ä" becomes "ae" by using the gsub
command.
Until I upgraded to

Using UTF8 under mysql in Centos6
Hi all,
I am trying to configure utf8 in mysql under centos6 to display
special characters, like accents. I use this mysql instance to store
plain syslog logs. I have configured this under my.cnf:
[mysqld]
init_connect = 'SET collation_connection = utf8_general_ci'
init_connect = 'SET NAMES utf8'
character-set-server = utf8
collation-server = utf8_general_ci

R-alpha: ISO-latin-1 characters in strings -- print.default & PARSE(?) problems
There seems to be a problem in print.default with some
ISO-latin1 characters (the chars AFTER ASCII in western Europe...)
if they appear in strings.
(no problem if they are part of a function comment, see below).
Some of the characters lead to 4 character Hex-codes being printed instead:
"û" ## ^u prints as "0xFB"
If you use the funny characters in comments of functions,

Update to website not printing special Characters
I thought you might be interested in how far I have got with solving
my problem with MySql(via phpMyAdmin) to website character_set
problems.
I thought I had solved the problem when my characters on my website
started showing the special characters.
This was a partial success though.
When I went back to phpMyAdmin and entered new text the problem was
the same, but reversed. What now happens is

Filenames with "special" characters (äöü€¶) on SMB share of Linkstation HD-HLAN250
Hello!
I've got a Buffalo Linkstation HD-HLAN250. This is a consumer
NAS device, which makes the built-in HD accessible via SMB
and FTP. On that system, some sort of Linux with some sort
of Samba is running.
I'm now trying to create filenames with special characters (ie.
non-ASCII chars) in it. For example "bl?der name" (means
"stupid name").

activerecord utf8 special characters odd behavior
Since upgrading to Rails 1.2.* my ActiveRecord has not been acting
properly:
When I perform a .find and give a UTF8 string as a conditional, the
select statement gives me the following:
SELECT * FROM albums WHERE (name = ''Medúlla'')
When I perform a .save on a model UTF8 and other characters ( . ! )
get stripped out of the query:
INSERT INTO albums (`name`)

MySQL connection collation
Hi!
I have ran on problem with collations. In database.yml I have set:
encoding: utf8, but when in console run:
>> ActiveRecord::Base.connection.collation
=> "latin1_swedish_ci"
It is Rails 2.1, mysql gem 2.7, mysql 5.1.22. This leads to errors like:
Mysql::Error: Illegal mix of collations (latin1_swedish_ci,IMPLICIT) and
(utf8_general_ci,COERCIBLE) for operation

sql codificación R
Estimados

dump and import MySQL table w/ accents
I am switching to a composite primary key (string and user ID) from the Rails
conventional auto-incrementing integer primary ID. The table is large (2.5
million records) and I''d rather not discard the contents. The
composite_primary_key gem doesn''t appear to support altering the table with a
migration to do its magic, only creating a table from scratch. So I dumped
the table
