Invoice and invoice_lines
Hello People, I have a possibly very lame question. I am fairly new to RoR, and I want to make sure I do it "right". I have a model called Invoice, and one called InvoiceLines. Usual story: the table "invoice" has a 1:n relationship with "invoice_lines", which includes invoice_id. Now... the application will have a "new order" button, which will allow

useful bit of code (hopefully)
Hi, I often find myself using bits of code like this inside ActiveRecord, perhaps it''s useful for others, or others can improve on it: ########### # fix user input before validating it before_validation :sanitize_input # santize input before actual validation is called # this uses the little methods defined below def sanitize_input trim %w(adres postcode woonplaats email naam

Storing Array in Database
Hey all, I''m storing an array of timestamps in a field in my database as an array. When the items get saved, however, some minus signs are appended to the text: sample output: --- - 1151971200 - 1152576000 - 1153180800 - 1153785600 - 1154390400 Is this normal behavior? When I retrive the value out of the database and .to_a, the three minus signs (---) are counted as the first

Bug in rails ?
Hi ! I just have a simple question. I am writing an app using rails to familiarize myself with the framework (which is pretty cool, by the way). I just wanted to know why these two work differently (since "find" should be a synonym for "detect" according to the Pick Axe) : current_item = @invoice.line_items.detect {|i| i.product.id == key} current_item =

Suggestion for improving value_to_boolean column conversion
Hi fantastic rails core developers. Speaking of version 2.3.5: I find it rather error_prone that values such that "some text" is silently converted to false when stored in a boolean DB field. Among other things it means that assign "some text" to boolean fields on a model will not generate any validation messages (it will silently be converted to false). I think it is like

Storing a Selected Option in DB
OK, thanks to Kelly I got my options_for_select in a select_tag helper method to use a Ruby range as a value. Now when the user makes a selection from that list, I can''t figure out why the result doesn''t get stored in the database. The line in the _form looks like this: <%= select_tag(:month, options_for_select((0..12).to_a)) %> Pops up an option menu.

Rails 4.1 activerecord_relation conversion to array problem
After I upgraded from rails 3.2 to 4.1 I am getting this error below. I researched that Rails 4.1 requires a conversion of an activerecord_relation to an array using to_a. I did use to_a but looks like rails is doing a select count behind the scenes. Do you know how to fix this? def index order_type = params[:order_type] @oh = OrderHeader.select("orders_header.*, users.username,

Serverside AjaxRequest or AjaxUpdater detections
Hi all, This question might be a long shot, but I''m going to ask it anyway. In my application, I''ve created a before_filter that does some magic. It looks like this: if request.xhr? then render :update do |page| page.redirect_to url_for_thingy end else redirect_to redirect_to url_for_thingy end This works perfectly, however, I have one annoyance. On the server side,

Specifying that code is called in a block
Not sure if this is possible currently. I have a section of code like this: ActiveRecord::Base.transaction do cow.save! duck.save! dog.save! end (Names changed to protect the innocent.) I''d like to specify that the saves run in a transaction. I can do ActiveRecord::Base.should_receive(:transaction).and_yield But is there any way to specify that the code is
