First hit on app takes a long time
So, I''ve deployed my first rails app, however I''m the only one hitting it for now. I''ve noticed that the first time I hit the app after some long period, it takes a really long time to respond (2-3 seconds). After that, it''s very fast. At first, I thought it might be my VPS "waking up" from some sleep state, but Rails does log the long load time

Public folder simple question
Hi to all, I''ve a simple question: does it possible to change the public folder address based on database value into application controller ? This because I must handle a multidomain rails application and I must separate the public folders for each different domain... Thanks in advance... -- Gianluca Tessarolo TreNetMediaMaster S.r.l. Issues creating tables in mysql tests
Hello, I''m a beginner, so any hints are appreciated; I''m still trying to find my way around Rails code. For a bug I''ve found I need to create a table called "values" so I added this: create_table :values do |t| t.integer :value end among the other table creations in activerecord/test/cases/migration_test.rb. Is that ok? But then, when I run the tests

SAS-like method of recoding variables?
Dear R-helpers, I am helping a SAS user run some analyses in R that she cannot do in SAS and she is complaining about R's peculiar (to her!) way of recoding variables. In particular, she is wondering if there is an R package that allows this kind of SAS recoding: IF TYPE='TRUCK' and count=12 THEN VEHICLES=TRUCK+((CAR+BIKE)/2.2); Thanks for any help or suggestions you might be able

Capture IP Address to Sessions
What I''d like to do: Capture the IP addresses of the folks visiting a web site in the Sessions table. What needs to be in place (code, model, controller, etc.), where does it need to go (application controller?), how best to set up the Sessions table? Appreciate a noob-friendly outline of what needs to be done. Thanks. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You

DRY validates_format_of?
In a model I have following validates_format_of. Is there an easy way to DRY this up? It seems to be rather repetitive. validates_format_of :expiration_date, :with => /^[0-9]{4}[-][0-9]{2}[-][0-9]{2}$/ validates_format_of :activation_date, :with => /^[0-9]{4}[-][0-9]{2}[-][0-9]{2}$/ validates_format_of :some_other_date, :with =>

dynamic drop downs for product search
Hey Everyone, I''m about to embark on having a search function for the products on my app via dynamic dropdowns. I assume you want the 'v' variable in panel.abline() to be interpreted in the context of your x-axis, which here represents a factor variable. Unless two factor variables have the same

Multiple databases + switching databases
Hello, I have an application that access two different DBMS - Firebird and Postgres. So far, that''s ok. The problem is, depending on the customer logged, a different database (Firebird) must be selected. To make the things clearer: Postgres: 1 database shared by all customers with these tables: - user - vehicle - driver Firebird: several databases with different names and identical

a few add_index questions..
on previous apps i hadn''t really worried much about adding foreign key indexes on my tables just because they''ve been fairly small and i didn''t really think i needed them. well, i''m working on something now that has the potential to have a lot more data, and a lot more foreign keys. so i have 3 tables... users, projects, and tasks.. should i be using add_index

Strip & Sanitize BEFORE saving data
So I''ve googled my brains out, and I see a lot of talk about TextHelper for views, but next to no discussion about cleaning text _before_ it is saved. I figured this had to be asked 4 zillion times, but I''m not finding anything concrete/obvious. Using h is fine as a safety catch, but that alone is not acceptable to me as the means of diffusing the impact of HTML or JS

routing failures
probably something really simple but I don''t understand. Shifting to Apache to w/ fastcgi (definitely feels faster than webrick) Anyway, I set the default route in routes.rb to be map.connect '''', :controller => "placements", :action => ''list'' which worked once I figured out apache... Anyway, now that I have done that, all attempts
