rails db indexing and through association
Hello, Say, I have a pictures table, and there are many objects which can have pictures, so I define a picturable type. Now, to make the query for pictures more efficient I should index the picture table using both picturable_type and picturable_id. Is this the correct approach to indexing the table, or can things be done better? I want the database retrieval operation to be extremely fast (I

Newbie''s problem with a nil object he didn''t expect!
Dear Rubyists/Rails gurus, Though I''ve successfully completed the various Rails tutorials online and the Depot application from the Agile Web Development with Rails book, I''m still pretty much a Ruby/Rails newbie. I''m trying to learn by writing my own simple blogging application, but I''ve run into a problem that has had me scratching my head for a few days now.

rake db:seed with has_many through (m:n with seperate table)
My model consists of users and tasks (m:n), the relation is stored in a seperate table sharedtabs (that contains some extra fields). Between tabs and tasks there is a 1:n relation. I have trouble writing my seed.rb: works: (1) tab = Tab.create(:name => ''Admin'', :category => 0) tab.tasks.create(:name => ''Admin_Tab1_Private Task 1'') works: (2)

Doubt on composite index
The AWDwR book has the following: add_index :categories_products, [:product_id, :category_id] add_index :categories_products, :category_id The first, composite index actually serves two purposes: it creates an index which can be searched on both foreign key columns, and with most databases it also creates an index that enables fast lookup by the product id. The second index then completes

Libs directory
Hello, I had an application on Rails 1.2 or 1.1 (don''t remember). Now I have updated it to 2.1. I had a migrations_helper.rb in the Libs directory which defined foreign_key and drop_foreign_key methods. But now migrate task doesn''t find them. Have I to include this directory somewhere with Rails 2.1? Doesn''t it work as always? Could I use another thing to declare

rescuing ActiveRecord::RecordNotUnique: clever or ugly?
I have an ActiveRecord that has several foreign keys, where the foreign keys act as a single compound key that needs to be unique: class CreateRelations < ActiveRecord::Migration def change create_table :relations do |t| t.references :src, :null => false t.references :dst, :null => false end add_index :relations, [:src_id, :dst_id], :unique => true end end

Problem with Oracle function-based indexes in Rails
Hello, We''re using Rails on an Oracle database. If we define an index like the following, we end up with problems during the "db:schema:dump" rake target. add_index "emcolumn", ["upper(name)"], :name => "ind_emcolumn_uname" The created schema.rb file contains: add_index "emcolumn", ["sys_nc00013$"], :name =>

MySQL backticks and column names
The upgrade to Rails 1.1 hurt my ability to run tests because it generated the following MySQL error: Mysql::Error: You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ''key ON config (key)'' at line 1: CREATE UNIQUE INDEX key ON config (key) I have a table called `config` with a column

rake craziness with Migrate as a dependency
Hi everyone, For one of our projects we have a need to deploy and maintain a demo. As a result I''ve attempted to setup a set of rake tasks for the job. My goal is have one rake task called "deploy_demo" which purges the database, migrates to the current schema, and loads the db from a set of fixture files in a specified location. I''ve written two new tasks the perform

Linking one model to another
I have a User model and a Thing model. I want to link users with things, so I have a migration that creates a permissions table with user_id and thing_id. The migration works fine and gives me three columns, I assume I need the permission''s ID so that I can delete it in future. Three questions come to mind though, which I have given thought but got nowhere. 1) Does the

form_remote_for, reloaded
Hi, being relativly new to RoR, I''m having a problem which I found described in this forum and somewhere else - but with no solution. I know, that it may be bad to mix table and form tags, but the first solution of an in place editing within a table looked nice: Version using form_for: <tr> <%form_for :time_record, :url => { :action => "add_time_record" } do

has_many with :finder_sql question
hi all, I have a Class, Client, which has_many projects (Project class). the projects depend on a session_id variable, however. So the question is, how can I do the following: has_many :projects, :finder_sql => "SELECT p.* FROM projects p INNER JOIN projects_users pu ON pu.project_id = p.id WHERE pu.user_id = #{session[:user_id]}" The problem is that I need to filter a

Foreign key constraints, fixtures, and rake task
I''ve got a spec that loads a fixture in the "before" block.
