belongs_to causing NoMethodError exceptions ... ?
I''ve got a really strange problem using belongs_to. I apologize in advance for the length... this is going to take a while to explain. Basic idea: Creating a User requires that the user enter an email address and activation key that matches an existing PendingUser. After creating the user successfully, that pending user should be marked as "used". The problem: When I

Major issues with ActiveRecord callbacks in BackgroundRb r324
Hi there I''ve been running BackgroundRb in production for a few months now. Recently we added encryption onto some of our ActiveRecord fields by hooking in the before_save and after_save callbacks, like: class MyCallback def initialize(attr_names) @attr_names = attr_names end def before_save(model) @attr_names.each do |attr_name| next if

updating model bypasses callbacks
Hi, Very quickly, I''m having trouble calling my before_save ro before_update callbacks when I do something like User.update(id, params["user"]). I notice that Rails is calling after_save but for some reason it doesn''t call the before_save or before_update callbacks. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks. -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Active Record observers broken: can't be used for "before" callbacks
I was just wondering what about a report that I made almost 2 months ago: Active Record observers broken<https://rails.lighthouseapp.com/projects/8994/tickets/4087-activerecord-observers-cant-be-used-for-before-callbacks> I think it''s a pretty big bug. In Rails 3, creating an observer with a "before_save" callback (for instance) will result in all observed models being

[OT] Sqlite2 question
So, under Sqlite2, if I want to update a database''s schema, I have to dump the DB, modify the table''s structure, then go and modify EVERY insert statement. The insert statements look like (from memory): INSERT INTO my_table VALUES (''some_id'', ''some_val'', '''', '''', '''', ''some_other

Callback sto InstanceMethods in a plugin
Hello there, I''m currently building a plugin, for which I need a before_save callback. The method I want to call is in module InstanceMethods, but when I add a before_save foo, foo, as defined as an InstanceMethod, never gets called. This is the first plugin I''m building, after only two weeks of fiddling with Ruby and Rails, so if anyone is kind enough to help me out.... :)

Ajax.Updater asynchronous => false
I was just working on a project where I needed to use Ajax.Updater with a synchronous request. It appears like all one would need to do is set the asynchronous option to false. I tried this and noticed that the content was being requested synchronously but the content was never injected into the DOM tree like one would expect from Ajax.Updater. In order to get the content returned by

Re: Rails-spinoffs] Ajax.Updater asynchronous => false
I just ran into this very problem myself. Yes, this is a bug in prototype. If you look in the code you will see that the relevent handlers and callbacks simply aren''t called with a synchronous request (onComplete is similarly not called). I submitted a patch <http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/4657> over at dev.rubyonrails.org which fixes this behavior. If you decide to check it

difference between attr_accessor and attr_accessible?
Hi, What''s the difference between attr_accessor and attr_accessible? Is attr_accessor to create a virtual variable/object and attr_accessible makes it accessible? Do you need attr_accessible if you already have attr_accessor? after_(read|find) callback?
I am pondering the possibility of encrypting/decrypting some fields in a SQLite backend on-the-fly. The point of the message is not security, I know that''s broken, but whether there''s a technique that provides on-the-fly save/read filters. Of course the solution would need to work transparently in joins, so user.posts.last.title would do the right thing if title

Can't mass-assign protected attributes even if I use attr_accessible
Hi, I''m working on a Rails 3.2.2 application which has JSON APIs and I use a CLI client for inserting some data. It works fine except for the Author model. When I try to create a new post (Post belongs_to :author and Author has_many :posts) I get the following error : <h1> ActiveModel::MassAssignmentSecurity::Error in PostsController#create </h1>

before before_validation callback
Hi, I was looking around a bit and couldn''t find any callbacks that executed before before_validation The current problem with using before_validation is that it won''t fire if I''m not using validations with #save(:validate => false) - which makes sense. Before_save won''t suffice because I want these callbacks to fire before validation on the occasions that
