Monit; BackgroundRB; environment variables
I started emailing monit mailing list because I started getting this
problem where I couldn''t start backgroundrb with monit anymore,
thinking it was a monit problem. However, I back tracked a bit since
I had added code to my project, and monit was able to start
backgroundrb again.
I seem to have zeroed in on the problem. I''m not sure where the
problem lies - maybe monit or

monit config?
Anyone have a a good monit config section for bgrb?
I''m thinking something like this:
check process backgroundrb with pidfile
/var/www/apps/foo/current/log/backgroundrb.pid
start program = "/var/www/apps/foo/current/script/backgroundrb start"
stop program = "/var/www/apps/foo/current/script/backgroundrb stop"

Need to call C++ processing beast from backgroudrb
Hello,
Bravo Ezra for Backgroundrb! What an elegant piece of engineering. I
envision many folks like myself looking at our CPU hogging executables and
finally seeing a clean path to the Web.
I was wondering if any folks have a good strategy for calling out to a C++
(or any other compiled) executable from a worker. Is the only option to call
system() from a worker? That feels a bit unsatisfying.

Backgroundrb needs a new maintainer.
Hello All-
Is there anyone out there that wants to take over as maintainer of
the backgroundrb project? I feel bad because I know lots of folks use
it but I absolutely do not have time to work on it anymore :(.
I''m looking for a new maintainer, I would give you all the access to
the project you need and try to help you come up to speed on the
codebase.
If anyone is

Fwd: installing backgroundrb
I''m trying to use BackgrounDRb to do image processing on large
uploaded zip files of images, but
$script/plugin install svn://rubyforge.org//var/svn/backgroundrb
gives me this:
/usr/lib/ruby/1.8/open-uri.rb:88:in `initialize'': No such file or
directory - svn://rubyforge.org//var/svn/backgroundrb (Errno::ENOENT)
I can install the old version with
$script/plugin install

A newbie question regarding BackgroundRb
Hi all,
I just read Ezra''s article on BackgroundRb and decided to use it one
of my projects. I installed the plugin into my rails project using
script/plugin and then ran rake backgroundrb:setup to copy the yml
scripts.
Now my backgroundrb.yml looks like

Unit tests are passing, but I''m having mucho problems getting brb to

Mongrel + BackgrounDRb + File Column = Upload Progress Bar?
Hi there,
I''ve been digging around trying to find some information (mostly examples)
on how one would handle a progress bar upload using BackgrounDRb and File
Column. I did read http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org/ and Ezra''s blog of
course, but I still have a few questions.
I made a simple upload form (as a test) that is submitted to the
"upload_song" action.

New BackgrounDRb release
Friends-
There is a new release of BackgrounDRb. This time it is a full
fledged rails plugin with generators and rake tasks thanks to Saimon
Moore. Thanks Saimon!
You can read all about it here on my blog:
http://brainspl.at/articles/2006/05/25/backgroundrb-new-release
The newest feature besides the much cleaner way to install and
control the drb server is caching. You can now use

new BackgroundRB
Hey Greg-
Yes I am sorry, the new architecture uses fork and named pipes and a
bunch of unix stuff to do its magick. Now you may be able to port it
to qwork on windows, but I don''t think it is possible :( I''m really
sorry about this but I need this thing to be as robust and solid as
it can be and in the end windows isn''t compatible. Now you may be
able to

A barrage of unexplained timeouts
We''ve been running unicorn-3.6.2 on REE 1.8.7 2011.12 in production for quite some time and we use monit to monitor each unicorn worker. Occasionally, I''ll get a notification that a worker has timed-out and has been re-spawned. In all these cases, when I look at the rails logs, I can see the last request that the worker handled, and they all have appeared to complete

Mocking Workers in Backgroundrb
Hi
Has anyone mocked a call like the following for backgroundrb?
MiddleMan.new_worker(:class => :admin_email_worker, :args => params
[:email])
I cannot seem to find the correct manner to do it.
Would have liked to be able to do MiddleMan.should_receive
(:new_worker).with(:class => :admin_email_worker, :args => {"body" =>
"my message"})
Cheers

Service monitoring/"Monit"?
Has anybody here tried the "Monit" utility (http://mmonit.com/monit/)? I
need to set up some kind of "watchdog" functionality for a custom
service otherwise started via init (i.e. via a script in /etc/init.d +
rc*.d links managed by chkconfig) and it seems like this system may give
me nearly what I want. However, something that concerns me about it, is
that it appears to

Using BackgrounDRb to replace nested loops?
In response to my Rails Weenie post today[1], someone mentioned that
I try BackgrounDRb to help take the strain off my application.

what is the correct way to stop/start a mongrel instance using monit with mongrel cluster
Hi --
I have been reading documentation and googling around to find the
correct way to do this but I have found many ways that seem to not
work, or the documentation makes no reference to.
I am using mongrel cluster with 10 mongrels for each server. Recently
I installed monit but which lead me to find the correct way to
start/stop mongrel instances one pid at a time. I am assuming one pid

Suppose a chatroom application, a RailsApp + 2 backgroundrbs: MiddleMan1&

Chater1 from db to memory, like his contacts or other personal settings.
When Chater2 login, RailsApp call MiddleMan2 do the same thing.

BackgrounDRb background task runner and Application Wide Context Store
Friends-
I''m happy to annouce the first alpa release of BackgrounDRb. This is
a small framework for managing long running background tasks that
allows for ajax progress bars and more. It also serves as an
Application wide cache and context store for when you need something
like sessions but shared between users and multiple backend processes
like fcgi''s or mongrels.

BackgrounDRb New release.
Howdy Folks-
I''m happy to announce a new release of BackgrounDRb! I have added
quite a few new features and included some nice patches from folks on
the list.
$ script/plugin install svn://rubyforge.org//var/svn/backgroundrb
All of the code now stays within the plugin and the start and stop
scripts are now just stubs. This makes it easier to tweak or figure
out how it works.
