compressed archives
Suppose I have a particular version of a largish compressed archive, most likely a .tgz or .tbz2, and that a remote machine has a newer, and only slightly different, version of the same archive, where most of the content hasn't actually changed much. I might attempt to obtain a copy of the newer archive by first copying my local older copy to the newer name as a file to update from. My

Javascript compression / How to hook in to rails development
Hi there, I thought it''s rather neat to use the javascript compression from http://dojotoolkit.org/docs/compressor_system.html This removes javascript comments and renames variables and seems pretty reliable and effective. For example, I keep the original htmlarea.js file from http://xinha.gogo.co.nz/ in a file htmlarea.js.txt and it compresses from 200K to 100K. With gzip it

Compressed mail archives
Hello, I have recently begun using IMAP to access my mails, and have found that the size of my maildir is quickly getting larger than I had anticipated. Googling around, I've seen a lot of messages related to compressing individual messages in a maildir. However, what I'm really looking for is a solution which will allow multiple messages to be compressed into a single compressed file,

[PATCH] Compressed output files
Attached is a patch that implements compressing output files as they're written to disk, uzing zlib. Thus far I've only used it with synchronizing directories on a single machine. What seems to work / what's done: - Synchronizing directories with all files in the target directory gzip'd. Files seem to contain the correct data. Use the option "--gzip-dest". -

Using memdisk with grub2 and a compressed iso
Hello, I'm having a problem booting a compressed ISO image using memdisk via grub2 (version 2.02). The entry in my grub.cfg looks like: menuentry 'boot ISO image' { linux16 /memdisk iso initrd16 /my-image.iso.gz } When selected, this starts to boot and then fails with: Ramdisk at 0x37979000, length 0x0033b298 gzip image: decompressed addr 0x7f7f7000, len

Audio level in compressed wav files
Anybody know an easy way to adjust audio level of recordings made in Asterisk (using the 'record' application)? I've noticed that recordings using the "wav" format are about twice the level of those made using "WAV" or "wav49". Unfortunately, the "wav" recordings are uncompressed and about 10 times the size of the other formats. -brian

Difference between compressed & uncompressed audio?
I would like is someone could give me a few hints on how to distinguish whether a WAV file is uncompressed or it was created by decompressing mp3 file - I usually could take a look at the file through Sound Forge and look if there is a freq. cut-off (usually above 16kHz) or if there isn't one - then I can easily tell by listening if there are high-frequency artifacts (common for mp3). Is there

Just switched to Ubuntu 2 days ago and trying to get the hang of Wine. I'm trying to run the IMVU client through it, but all that happens is that the login screen will come up and let me log in, but after that I get an IMVU icon in the upper right but no client to use. When running the command to execute IMVU through the terminal, I get the following: Code: env

Changing the name of a compressed file
Concerning Maildir, the wiki page on compression has this: All mails must have ,S=<size> in their filename where <size> contains the original uncompressed mail size, otherwise there will be problems with quota calculation as well as other potential random failures. Note that if the filename doesn?t contain the ,S=<size> before compression, adding it afterwards changes the base
