Mongrel + Apache 1.3 + OpenBSD
Hello,
I want to install a mongrel rails server with an apache in fronthead,
all that on OpenBSD. But OpenBSD is released with a homemade Apache
1.3.29 patched by the OpenBSD team. I really want to keep this version
of apache and I don''t want to change it to Apache 2.x (because of the
security and the license but it''s not the point here). But for having
mongrel, it has to be with

Running Apache sites as separate users
I had a recent request to improve security on my web servers by having each
website use a different user to run the hosting service. So
example1.comhas it's own Apache instance running as apache1 and then
example2.com has its own instance of Apache as apache2. Is this even
possible or realistic? I understand the idea of how that would be secure,
much like creating a virtual machine to

What''s the best way to do complex inheritance?
I have a Merchant class that has many Products. Product is an abstract
class which has many subclasses (ProductA, ProductB, etc). All Products
have common data, like ''name'', ''status'', ''created_on'', etc... but they
also have some completely different properties.
It seems like Active Record only supports Single Table Inheritance.

Problem with image caching
Hello,
I have a little problem with image caching. I have a Student model which
contains, for each student, a picture (picture_data for datas and
picture_type for the content-type of the picture). As I want to save
brandwidth, I followed the tutorial in
http://manuals.rubyonrails.com/read/chapter/62 for caching pictures. If
I test, as the tutorial suggests it, with curl, it''s working

IAX Inbound Sound Quality
I have a couple of DID's through VP Connect and have been having sound
quality issues on incoming calls. During the call, the calling parties
voice sometimes sound like it is crackling, in other words it is not
very crisp. I would liken it to listening to a radio with a blown
speaker. This sound defect comes and goes throughout the call. The
other person is always audible but it just isn't

load balancer recommendations
Hello all,
The question is not necessarily CentOS-specific - but there are lots of
bright people on here, and - quite possibly - the final implementation will
be on CentOS hence I figured I'd ask it here. Here is the situation.
I need to configure a Linux-based network load balancer (NLB) solution. The
idea is this. Let us say I have a public facing load balancer machine with
an public IP

That is interesting news. I always go on about mpeg4 and h264 as if
they are the ideal, wheras in an ideal world something like ogg theora

Unicorn and HAProxy, 500 Internal errors after checks
Hi,
This morning, while checking for a correct deployment, we found out
that the Unicorns we are using were sending 500 Internal errors very
frequently to the HAProxy that sits in front of them. After some
investigation, It turned out that HAProxy checks the backend by
opening and closing a connection to the unicorn. Unfortunately the
Unicorns we use ( v 0.990.0 ) will try to reply to this probe

Why Rails + mongrel_cluster + load balancing doesn''t work for us and the beginning of a solution
We have been searching for a Rails deployment architecture which works for
us for some time. We''ve recently moved from Apache 1.3 + FastCGI to Apache
2.2 + mod_proxy_balancer + mongrel_cluster, and it''s a significant
improvement. But it still exhibits serious performance problems.
We have the beginnings of a fix that we would like to share.
To illustrate the problem, imagine a

Running two clusters side by side
I''m happy to announce that ChaCha.com a new search engine that debuted this
week and it runs on a mongrel cluster.
Warning, promo follows. :)
ChaCha.com is unlike any other search engine since it allows you to connect
to a "guide" with experience in the field(s) of knowledge you are searching
in. (Based on your keywords) Check it out at http://www.chacha.com

LVM, usb drives, Active Directory
I have a client with a handful of USB drives connected to a CentOS
box. I am charged with binding the USB drives together into a single
LVM for a cheap storage data pool (10 x 1 TB usb drives = 10 TB cheap
storage in a single mount point).
The next fun piece is how to incorporate that storage space into an
existing Active Directory structure to apply AD acls for limited
access.
I'd rather

Rails controller with Win32 COM object calls
Has anyone had any experience with making calls to Win32 COM object in a
rails controller. I have no problem making the calls using the WIN32
module, however I do seem to have some memory leaks, when the COM object
being called at some point makes use of SafeArrays. The same method
calls in VB,Visual C++ don''t produce the same memory leaks. I realize
this might seem a little odd, but

Terminology
Hello folks,
I''ve blended/updated the Glossary of Terms
(<http://reductivelabs.com/trac/puppet/wiki/GlossaryOfTerms>). It seems
the definition of "manifests" is a bit different amongst members.
Some people consider a "manifest" to be a configuration file written in
puppet, e.g. any .pp file. But at my organization, we''ve considered the

ultramonkey vs pound?
I know most people use pound, but has anyone tried using ultramonkey as
a load balancing solution between a cluster of mongrels and lighttpd?
Thanks,
Ray

Mongrel, lighty, pound, and request.remote_ip
Is anyone using the setup described at the Rails blog?
http://weblog.rubyonrails.org/2006/7/3/pound-makes-lighty-and-mongrel-

I''m using it in production, and the only problem I have is the same
as people have described in the comments over there, namely that
Rails thinks all requests come from localhost.
See http://isabont.com/requestinfo for the headers.

default features
Hi
We are provisioning some default features to our customers like "automated answer when outside labor time", "rerouting when Subscriber Absent", and so.
These are macro calls embedded in key points inside the dialplan.
Since not all customers need/want all features and they (the features) are
customized, I named them like [macro-feature1-ClientA],
[macro-feature4-ClientF],

Survey: what's the best HTTPd/TFTPd/FTPd to serve up configuration files to sets
I would like to start a discussion centred around the various ways one
might serve up configuration files from an Asterisk server (I know, it's
better to use a secondary server for all this, but let's talk about a
smaller system).
The types of things being served would include:
- Logo image for sets that support that
- XML directory files
- XML or raw text configuration files

Lost while trying to deploy rails app on apache
I need to graft some rails apps onto a website running apache 1.3 and
I must be missing something very obvious because I cannot get things
working properly. Here is what I need:
1) The server must be running apache 1.3. A very large body of PHP
content is currently vended by the server through 5 vhosts and I have
neither the time nor resources to replace apache1 with apache2 or
lighttpd. Maybe

Cannot get puppetlabs-haproxy to do what I want
I''ve been having a mess of a time using this module, which stinks because
its behavior is EXACTLY what I am looking for... whenever I bootstrap new
rabbitMQ nodes I want to add them to our HAProxy instance.
Here''s my relevant site.pp entries:
