Straight-quotes for usage and examples sections in PDF docs?
Is there any way to ensure that quotation marks are left as straight
quotes and not converted to curly quotes in the \usage and \examples
sections when the pdf versions of the docs are created?

[OT] Curly Quotes on a Mac
There''s such a Mac-friendly group here, I thought I might get some
guidance. I''m happily developing everything on my PowerBook, and loving
it. Yeah, TextMate is way cool. But all my clients keep sending me copy
in Microsoft Word format and the curly quotes, ellipses, dashes, etc.
turn into question marks.
This might be overreaching, but is there some way to open the Word

Multi Byte Strings
Hey guys,
We''ve been talking about the multi-byte patch and I think it''s time to
get feedback from you guys on a possible way forward.
We can include ActiveSupport::Multibyte with rails 1.2, and update all
of the relevant helpers to use the String#chars proxy. This will mean
that none of the action view helpers will mangle multibyte strings.
Similarly, if any Strings are being

Conversion error: Illegal multibyte sequence
Hello list,
I've noticed this problem for a few years now, I think. I see it popped
out now and then in discussions. But they always end before a solution
is given.
So let's try one more time :-)
I have plenty of UTF-8 named files and directories. It's UTF-8 all
round, I don't use anything else, so I have no doubt the byte sequences
are correct in the filesystem (I happen to

convert_string_talloc: Conversion error: Incomplete multibyte sequence
My users are having a lot of problems since I upgraded a samba domain
member server from samba-3.0.37 to 3.5.X. The main issue seems to be a
very long delay loading office files (sometimes minutes if the file
loads at all) and a lot of read only errors and users not being able
to save. I have found that rebooting the client, restarting samba, or
killing the users smbd process regains access to the

Encoding
What''s a good solution for fixing character encoding problems for
compatibility between ascii and utf-8? The database is postgres and
is encoded in utf-8.
Once in awhile there will be a compatibility error from strings from a
webform.
Is there a command to fix this besides using
a_string.force_encoding(''utf-8'')? Even this doesn''t seem to always
work either.

Can I make spss.get reencode from Windows-1252?
Hi all. I have an SPSS file that I'm loading into R with the Hmisc spss.get function. The trouble is that the SPSS file uses the Windows-1252 character set (which I think is the default for SPSS on Windows) instead of plain-ol' Latin-1, and since spss.get doesn't allow me to pass the "reencode" option to read.spss, any characters in Windows-1252 that are not a part of Latin-1

read.spss and encodings
Hi!
I'm having trouble with importing spss files containing non-ascii characters

Download the following file:

require (foreign)
Sys.setlocale (locale="C")
read.spss("comphomeneu.sav")$ARBEIT[1]

pasting a formula string with double quotes in it
Hello everyone,
I have tried several ways of doing this and searched the documentation and
help lists and I have been unable to find an answer or even whether it is
possible to do it. I am pasting together a formula and I need to insert
double quotes around the strings. Here's an example:
location <- c("AL", "AK", "MA", "PA")
v=2

replacing " with "
Python-markdown currently replaces all straight quotes (`"`) with the
html entity (`"`). Someone recently complained about this in a
[bug report][]. As it turns out the quote was the symptom that brought
the real problem to light[^1]. In any event, the reporter pointed out
that markdown.pl does not replace straight quotes with the html
entity. I know John Gruber has mentioned before

strange matching: maybe a multilanguage collation problem?
Hi,
We''re using Ferret in a slightly unorthodox way: We''re indexing a
large (>100,000) list of names of places all around the world. Mostly
we''re quite happy with it, and have been able to graft on our own
particular required functionality with just a little tweaking.
There''s one strange problem, though: We''ve got a place in Cyprus

error in calling source(): invalid multibyte character in parser
Being italians when writing comments/instructions we use accented letters - like ?, ?, ?, etc.... when running R scripts using such characters I get and error saying:
invalid multibyte character in parser
I have been looking at the help and searched the r-help archives but I haven't find anything that I could intelligibly apply to my case.
Can anyone suggest a fix for this error?
Thanks,

Dear Sirs,
I'm running samba in utf-8/utf-8 mode (unix charset/display charset),
clients are: Windows XP/RUS, files and directories are created by clients
directly, so samba says:

feedback on a few ActiveSupport::Multibyte patches
Hi all,
In response to Rodrigo Rosas''s message about mb_chars.upcase not
giving the expected result on 1.9, I''ve done some work in a fork to
make String#mb_chars always return an instance of a proxy class, both
with Ruby 1.8 and Ruby 1.9. The end result of the patch is
(hopefully) to make Rails'' multibyte functionality behave the same way
in 1.8.7 and 1.9.x.

Using idmap_rid backend, cannot browse home directory from XP
Samba version is 3.0.10 on Gentoo linux. I am trying
to use idmap_rid backend in a Windows AD environment,
the Linux PC acting only as a domain member. I am
using idmap_rid because I need UID/GID predictability.
I can log in to console correctly, and it shows the
right user and the "Domain Users" as the group.
When I use default winbind TDB, I can browse the home
directory from an XP

Help Read File With Odd Characters
I have a large (105MB) data file, tab-delimited with a header. There are
some odd characters at the beginning of the file that are preventing it
from being read by R.

Error in make.names(col.names, unique = TRUE) :

When I view the file with head, I see:

The file is too large
