failover strategies - failing open vs. failing closed.
I''d like to setup a box with 2 NICs as a firewall which will also rate limits outbound traffic. What happens when/if that box hangs or is rebooted? I''d like a solution that when there is a failure, traffic can still go through the box even though the firewall and rate limiting functions will no longer be in effect. I believe that this is "failing closed" but have

Inaccurate results without natting the traffic.
Hi folks. For quite a while, I tried to use linux (cbq and htb) to control bandwidth in order to replace a cisco equipment used to play this role on our network. After trying here and there, with a bunch of different distros, different versions, different compilations, ... the closest I could get was as follows: (using htb.init and cbq.init) Desired BW ==> Achieved BW 128k ==> 404.78

Wrapping prio in tbf
The manual says (about prio): > Because it doesn''t actually shape, the same warning as for SFQ holds: > either use it only if your physical link is really full or wrap it > inside a classful qdisc that does shape. The latter holds for almost all > cable modems and DSL devices. I want to wrap prio inside of tbf. Here''s why: I have a server on a DSL line, which has

TC breaking Virtual network connection
Good afternoon, I am a newbie to lartc. I have read the HOWTO. I set up a CBQ traffic control using the following commands, and it caused my VNC connection to break frequently. ======================================================================= **CBQ: cbq-1280.My_shaper /sbin/tc qdisc del dev lo root /sbin/tc qdisc add dev lo root handle 1 cbq bandwidth 20Mbps avpkt 1000 cell 8 /sbin/tc

Resetting traffic history
I''m a tc newbie, and I think I am close to being able to use it to control one of the virtual web sites on our Gentoo Linux server. The site has it''s own IP address. I have a bit of a problem in that the way I originally configured tc, the busy site grabbed all the bandwidth, leaving none for the other (and more important) sites. Here is how I had configured it: tc

Suggestion.
Hi, I''m new to the list. I intend to learn about some Linux Networking features to help myself and others. I''m looking to control the bandwidth in my office. Basically there are like 20 computers, a 2MB Adsl Line. And I would love to let them only use a certain amount of bandwidth. For example let every client use 20KB of internet bandwidth of the 210KB we can download

Marking returned MASQ'ed packets (ingress, TC, etc.)
Hi Folks, I''m using a 2.4.x kernel and TC from the iproute2 package so that I can limit traffic through my gateway. I''m using this to mark packets when they leave the LAN: /sbin/ipchains -A forward -j MASQ -i eth0 -s 192.168.1.0/24 -d 0.0.0.0/0 -m 1 When the packets return, I need to have them marked again so that the ingress filter will limit the bandwidth in the opposite

tc is giving an error: RTNETLINK answers: File exists
Hello, I''m using tc to limit the bandwidth of our wireless customers. I have a working script, but I''m not happy with it. I''m trying to write a more sophisticated script, but when I run it, it give me this error: RTNETLINK answers: File exists I have no idea what this error means or how to fix it. Here is a portion of the script (the whole script shapes several

Hi everyone, This is on a linux box, ingress (eth1) at 100Mb/s and egress (eth0) at 10Mb/s. The purpose is to test CBQ Here is my script ------------------------------------------------------------------- # Root qdisc tc qdisc add dev eth0 root handle 1:0 cbq bandwidth 9Mbit \ avpkt 1000 cell 8 # Classes tc class add dev eth0 parent 1:0 classid 1:1 cbq bandwidth 9Mbit \ rate 5Mbit weight

how to borrow bandwith
Hi,All I am using iproute2 to manage bandwith for ADSL router.High, medium, low priority are needed for different protocol port on the ADSL's upstream side,as following: LAN --- |ADSL Router|------WAN When there aren't traffic on the specific priority, its bandwidth should be borrowed by other priorities. But it doesn't work. Here is my script: /usr/sbin/tc qdisc del dev nas0 root

TC Hashing Filters
Hey all, I had asked a question a little while ago about CPU usage being outrageous while using tc and a cbq qdisc. Ed was very kind and offered a few suggestions. One of these was to look at hashing. So after pounding away at it for about a week, I have a general understanding of how it works and have tried to implement it. Unfortunately, and quite obviously since I''m posting here, it

Slightly offtopic: IRC channel archives
Hi all. I fear I''m slightly offtopic with this question, but I''ll keep it short: who is (or feels) responsible for the #lartc irc-channel in oftc.net? I''d appreciate if that person would get in contact with me (off-list) in order to discuss some ideas I have. Thanks in advance. OK, finally I have made cbq run ! now I would like to know if it is posible to limit a range of IP to a speed. something like this : from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.21 limit to 128K I don''t whant to limit each IP to 128K, what I would like to do is limit all 20 IP to have a max of 128K. Is it posible?

priority bands don't reduce interactive latency?
I run a small Linux webserver and NAT router from my cable modem at home. Whenever someone starts an http download, all other traffic from my LAN is starved. Bandwidth is not really an issue, but latency is particularly horrible -- pings that usually come back in 20ms can take up to 600ms while the web server is active! I set up QoS (netfilter+iproute2) on the NAT machine in an attempt to give

Problen in cbq , fw
Hi, In my LAN Iam trying to make following setup: - All the traffic generated by 10.0.2.1 should go to 10.0.2.11, If the destination of this traffic is internet than it should be placed on its interface eth1. Outgoing traffic on eth1 should be shaped. For this I am using fw filters and cbq. _______ 10.0.2.1 -------> 10.0.2.11(eth0 )----| A
