Connections
I''m checking out backgroundrb for a calculation process I estimate will take 2-3 minutes and be ran on-demand only via Rails. Very easy and slick. But I have a question. The connections never close, if I do a netstat they just keep piling up. Do I need to do some housekeeping somewhere? I noticed the @ connection.close statements are commented out in favor of a # FIXME type deal.

Mongrels dying on FreeBSD 5.5-STABLE......why why why?
Yo Zed and everyone else, I''m having a major problem I''m hoping someone can help with. I''ve been running mongrel clusters for a few months with no problems on a couple of my boxes. They both run Debian... I recently moved one of my older Rails apps on a FreeBSD 5.5 box to mongrel as well. Everything runs quickly and wonderfully - when it''s running! My problem

What is so hard about Rails deployment?
Recently there has been a lot of fuss about the ease of Rails deployment. People made various claims, such as "I''ve deployed PHP, Java, (insert something else here) and Rails. Rails is by far the most painful." and "Java deployment (with Tomcat) is easier." I have no experience with Java deployment. But I have a friend who has worked on several high-end software

Article: Creating a Live Datagrid
I just finished posting an article on creating a lightweight but very functional web grid that does a slick job of live updating whatever content you put in. Much like Rails itself, I pulled the code from an active project effort, in the hopes that others would find it useful. http://unspace.ca/discover/datagrid Or, for the impatient, give the demo a shot: http://unspace.ca/datagrid Feedback

Datagrid with RJS
I''m trying to create a list of doctors with names and surnames. I want to be able to add many doctors using AJAX and then save all of them at the same time. All the doctors are associated to a patient. I want to do something like the datagrid in http://unspace.ca/datagrid/update but I would like to use RJS because this fellow used javascript before RJS came out. And also, they are

Editable datagrid using wice_grid and in_place_editor?
Hi All, I need to create an editable data grid. What would be a good way to do it? I did not explore wice_grid much - but it does not seem to allow editing. I was wondering if I could use a combination of in_place_editor and wice_grid to achieve this. -- Regards, Kashyap

DataGrid (Table) using tables/Scriptaculous Sortable
Hey yall, I wanted to share some code I''ve been working on as it seems up the alley of folks on this list. It''s not rails, per se, but one day... DataGrid: http://development.finetooth.com/?p=6 This also showcases the option.delay perameter I''ve submitted into scriptaculous - hold down your mouse for one second on any column other than Vendor and then drag away ;) The

Rmagick not handling GIF files properly...
Tracked down the source of my problem... It seems that Rmagick isn''t properly cropping/resizing GIF or PNG images when uploaded via file_column. I can upload JPG files just fine. Originally I had installed ImageMagick via Debian''s apt-get and built the rmagick gem using "gem install rmagick". This wasn''t working so I uninstalled ImageMagick and tried to

Anyone running a business hosting plan @ textdrive?
I currently run a handfull of sites on a MediaTemple VPS - which is blazing fast and very cheap for what I get. BUT installing rails and mysql v4 was a major pain in my ass, along with other things. I''m considering switching to a Textdrive business hosting plan but wanted to get some feedback from list members first. I pay about $200 a month quarterly for my MediaTemple service.
