2005 a send_file odyssey (or Rails and Apache don''t always play well)...
Hi, I''m developing a Rails application that (amongst other things) lets users download media files. These files range in size from a few kilobytes up to several gigabytes. All this development is taking place with Rails 1.0 on a Solaris host with Ruby 1.8.2 and Rails mode set to "development". I''m using the Rails send_file method to send each file with these

send_file doesn't work with Apache?...
Hi, I''ve been using send_file in my Rails application with WEBrick happily to send files of various sizes and kinds. The same code fails to send anything but a 500 error when run under Apache, and a log file message "warning: syswrite for buffered IO". Looking back through the mailing list archives I see that there have been send_file bugs in the past. Can some knowledgeable

send_file bug
I had a problem with the send_file method. I saw that some of you had the same problem but with no real solution/explanation first problem the :stream options, and not ''streaming'' as I see in some doc or book. the second problem : when you set :stream to true, there''s a use of syswrite that should not be. I detailed this in response to a ticket opened by stuart

boolean button helper
I don''t have a blog, but wanted to share this little bit of code with other semi-beginners like myself who are still learning to take advantage of rails features. Selecting an attribute with a boolean switch is a common pattern in forms. You can do it with a check box, but radio buttons are more expressive in some situations and better convey to the user that they are making a mandatory

Using render inside a FormBuilder (EdgeRails)
I''m using the latest trunk of 1.2-ish, and I''m wondering how to do what I want to do. I am using a form_for :builder I wrote, simply called TableFormBuilder after the rails cookbook, and want to be able to present help icons automatically. I want these icons to appear next to form fields I am rendering. For example, I have this method in helpers/table_form_builder.rb: # This

sort.int(S3object) strips class but not the is.object flag
If x has an S3 class then sort.int(x) returns a value without an S3 class but which has the is.object flag set, which, I think, causes identical() give a false/misleading report: > x <- structure(1:3, class="unrecognizedClass") > y <- sort.int(x) > t <- 1:3 > identical(y, t) # expect TRUE [1] FALSE > identical(as.vector(y), as.vector(t)) # expect

Turn element hidden by default (ajax question)
(this is my first post on the ruby forum. If this is not the right place for this type of question please let me know). Ajax question I have a checkbox that toggles the visibility of another element (a text field) with the code: --- <p><label for="checkbox">Appear!</label> <%= check_box :object_name, :method, :onClick =>

ActionView::Helpers::FormHelper instance methods should take an object reference rather than an object_name.
Hi ActionView::Helpers::FormHelper methods (e.g. #text_field, #check_box...) take object_name as an argument. From this argument they infer a name that is supposed to contains the reference to the relevant object. I can''t see why the FormHelper methods were designed that way. Compared to simply passing them a reference, the current way seems too complicated and an invitation to problems

errors_for
Been playing with merb. One of the helpers I liked in rails was on form validations. Found this was real easy to port over, so I thought I''d share. It doesn''t highlight the field with the error, but it gives that same nice little div on top. Say I had an articles controller def create @article = Article.new(params[:article]) @article.save! redirect

Creating a new virtual field
Hello, I have a problem with one of my Rails-Application, I have a table and on this there is object_name and a object_nr, so i want to create a combination of both in the model for a collection box. I''ve tried something like this: def set_new_object_name objects = find(:all).to_new_object_name end def self.to_new_object_name self.new_object_name = self.object_nr + " -

HP-UX/AIX sendfile patches.
I have a fix for the sendfile.c code for HP-UX - length not properly specified prior to call. I've also added code to support the AIX send_file() function and configure.in code to check for AIX specific send_file API and sets AIX_SENDFILE_API if successful. Could you consider this patch for 3.0.11? I also sent a web/cgi.c patch for "struct var" last week with respect to compile

Overwrite form helper methods and call old ones in new ones?
Hi all All my forms should look the same, so I think always putting the right div etc. tags around them is a violation of the DRY principle. Until now my forms look like that: <div class="text_field"> <label for="news_item_subject">Subject:</label> <%= text_field "news_item", "subject" %> </div> Now I want the default

Popup Calendar and DateBoxEngine and Change Made ...
Community, I have been putting off implementing a Date selector for too long. Tonight, I finally put it in. I made the choice to go with the datebox engine. Once I got it installed and working, I realized I didn''t like the way it required you to call it. Example: <% @dateField = model.date %> <%= date_box %> or... <% @dateField1 = model.date %> <%=

Strange send_file problem
Or perhaps I am stumbling in newbie fashion (tho I have active_merchant and a store site basically up and running in development mode - still I don''t feel I always understand what is going on.) So, when I have send_file(filename, :type => ''application/x-zip'') redirect :action => index the send_file seems to hang, rather than complete. I''m deducing

send_file and locking files after download?
Hello, I''m working on a download service which grants users a one-time-download access to files. The idea is to write an entry to a database table after a successful download that "locks" the download link for the user. After doing some quick tests with send_file I noticed that send_file does not block until the user has downloaded the full file, but proceeds with the
