model with not te be updated attributes ?
Hi List,
I have a table that contains several fields that must be initialized
when first created, but may not be altered afterwards (when updating the
other fields) because they can be changed by external processes.
I noticed that the ActiveRecord update commands (even update_attribute)
only seem to work by loading the complete record, changing fields that
need to be changed and doing a full

PostgreSQL Schema and Rails
Hey all,
I am curious about how Rails interacts with SCHEMAs in PostgreSQL. From
the generate command, is it possible to setup a scaffold for a table not
in the public. schema in PostgreSQL?
As a test, I tried,
./script/generate scaffold Manage.Form Manage.Form
No dice.
Any suggestions?

Serialized object behaves weird
Hi!
I got a class named EinsatzFilter which I serialized to session. Before
saving to session it works afterwards I keep getting the message:
"undefined method `to_s'' for #<Person:0x38c6ab8>". "Person" is a from
ActiveRecord::Base inherited class.
Code:
class EinsatzFilter
include ApplicationHelper
attr_reader :personen, :monat, :projekte, :kunde

Tables names with model classes in seperate modules
I have a module that deals with content pages and categories in my
application so create following tables:
content_pages
content_categories
Obviously I need a Page and Category module to map to these tables, but
in order to avoid conflicts with other Category classes, i declare my
model classes like this:
Content::Page
Content::Category
Now, that''s all fine - except that my models

Logistic regression : dicrepancies between glm and nls ?
Dear list,
I'm trying to learn how to use nlme to be able to fit ad analyse
mixed-model logistic regressions. In order to keep things simple, I
started by the simplest possible model : a one (fixed-effect ...)
continuous variable. This problem is, of course, solved by glm, but I
wanted to look at a "hand-made" nls fit, in order to be able to
"generalize" to nlme

problems with migrations in sql server
Is anyone using migrations with a SQL Server database who might be able to
lend me a hand? I''ve used migrations with MySql in the past and haven''t
run into any issues so forgive When I run rake migrate nothing is actually
getting updated in my database. I created a migration using
./script/generate migration AddFooTable and updated the migration to look as

sti + namespace
I''m spidering historical weather data from various sources. I have a
WeatherStation class that is begging for an STI implementation: a
WeatherStation is associated with a specific weather service, and each
weather service has its own protocol for fetching weather data, but most
of the code is can be shared in the WeatherStation parent class. Ergo
STI.
But there are a lot of weather

Major problem with a new ZFS setup
We recently installed a 24 disk SATA array with an LSI controller attached
to a box running Solaris X86 10 Release 4. The drives were set up in one
big pool with raidz, and it worked great for about a month. On the 4th, we
had the system kernel panic and crash, and it''s now behaving very badly.
Here''s what diagnostic data I''ve been able to collect so far:

large fonts on plots
Hi all,
I need to enlarge te fonts used oo R-plots (plots, histograms, ...) in
labels and titles etc.
I seem to be unable to figure out how to do it. The problem is that the
titles of the plots are simply unreadable when I insert them into my LaTeX
text, since they are relatively small compared to the entire plot.
I am sure it is pretty simple, can anybody give me a hint ?

OCI adapter slowdown on dictionary access
Hi,
after some experience with Rails on MySQL databases I gave it a try on one
of our larger Oracle database.
I was facing a problem when Rails tried to detect the columns for a
model/table. The appropriate statement ran about 1 min which led to a
timeout.
Our Oracle guru told me to analyze the SYSTEM schema. After that hadn''t
helped, he said the only remaining chance is to use a

"disregarded projections" warning when fitting lm model
Hi all,
I'm fitting a linear model (using lm) to some 2500 data points. The
model consists of 4 single terms and two combined terms. I get the
following warning message:
"Extra arguments projections are just disregarded. in: lm.fit(x, y,
offset = offset, singular.ok = singular.ok, ...) "
Can anybody clarify this ? I don't seem to find any pointer to what
