Duplicate entry - how to check if an id exist before saving?
How do I check if an entry exists before saving?
Someone one told me to use the method find_or_create (or something like
that)
but it didn''t work because I think the version of rails that we have is
not the most recent.
I need a way to check if an id exists in the db before saving. Any
suggestions?
Thank you

How can I sort options in a select box?
Pretty much a newbie here, looking for help on select boxes in forms....
Is there any way in the view to sort the options of a drop-down select
box?
My current code (within a larger _form.rhtml file) is:
<div class="form-element">
<label for="asset_location_id">Location</label>
<%= select ''asset'', ''location_id'',

Validation dependent on unsaved parent
I''m having trouble with a validation that depends on an attribute of a
belongs_to parent. If the child is added to an unsaved parent
(parent.children << new child), the has_many collection
parent.children includes the unsaved child. However the belongs_to
attribute child.parent appears to be nil until the parent has been
saved. Without access to the parent attributes, the validation

many-to-one relationship, do I need a second table?
Ok, to keep things short. Im wondering if I need a secondary
relationship table to handle my many-to-one relationships. Here is an
example of what I''ve written down. For instance say I want to find all
of the people in a given location.
class Location < AR:Base
has_many :people
end
class Person < AR:Base
belongs_to :location
end
My SQL tables look like:

Table Relationships Problems.
I have the following tables setup:
locations
:id
:name
systemmessages
:id
:name
systemmessage_validtimes
:id
:name
:systemmessage_id
:location_id
:start
:end
The systemmessage_validtimes has a ''has_many'' relationship with
systemmessages, meaning that there could be many valid times for each
system message.
@systemMessage = Systemmessage.find(1)
E.g. I

How to deserialize an array from XML
Hi,
to serialize an array to xml we can use:
an_array = [ 1, 2, 3]
an_array.to_xml
But to I can''t find a way to convert back XML to array. I didn''t find a
method Array.from_xml like Hash.from_xml.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Gustavo

Build associated model confusion
I''m new to Rails3, and I''m just trying to get one last thing to work
before I call it a night. The situation is the following (please if
the code is horrible, just let me know, still learning):
I want to log a dive. I might have a new location on that dive at
which point I have to create a new Location, and then create the dive.
A dive has_one location. A location has_many

habtm "AND" find conditions
I have two tables and a join table for them
e.g. books, authors in a many to many relationship (habtm) and a join
table books_authors.
I can successfully search for a book that has
"author.id = 2 OR author.id = 4"
but I am unable to search for
"author.id = 2 AND author.id = 4"
This is because the result of all the joins only has one author.id
column so no single row has

Patch series for Cloud Vm Actions
The following two patches should be applied in the order:
* [PATCH server] Add svc_vm_actions method to VmService.
* [PATCH server] Cloud UI layer to initiate actions on vms.
The service layer patch should work fine on its own (and not break
anything), but cloud patch relies on service being there.

Bizarre ActiveRecord::Errors/validation problem
I could be going mad and missing something really obvious here but I''m
getting an unexpected result from the following.
The schema:
create_table :services, :force => true do |t|
t.column :id, :primary_key
t.column :name, :string, :ilmit => 5, :null => false
t.column :port, :integer, :null => false
t.column :status, :string
end
The model:

How to add Asia token analyzer to ferret simply?
Hi,David
Can you give me an example of how to add analyzer to ferret to Asian
languages?
My web application will have to support multi language search,which
means,for example,both Chinese and English will be searched through the
form.
Currently,I have decided to use the simple token principles,which means
that every Chinese character will be a token,although this is not so
well in some

hash fixture access broken in functional test
I have a functional test class that uses the "topics" fixture. I
verified that the fixture is loaded into the database by doing this:
assert_equal 2, Topic.find_all.size
So I should have an instance variable called @topics and instance
variables for each of the rows in the fixture, in this case, @first and
@another. But all those variables are nil inside my test method.
Is that

Help needed using assigns() functionality in functional test
Accidentally posted this to the engines group first...dang computers :-)
I''m trying to create a functional test where the controller action (for
now, anyway) breaks apart a string and populates intermediate variables
with the results. I want to check the intermediate vars in my test, so I
tried the following
(in the controller)
def string_action
# do some processing, etc.

Function Testing Reloading Fixtures before assertion
Hey Everyone,
I have a function test the is failing (despite the fact the function
actually works in the application). I was looking for some debug
advice on how to find my problem.
Here is the test:
def test_should_delete_word
assert_equal ''published'', words(:one).status

delete :destroy, :id => words(:one).to_param

aaf and dynamic attrs: a bug?
Hi!
I faced some issue while using it for dynamic attrs indexing/search.
Maybe I made something wrong. Here is test method. Everything works just
fine until last line http://pastie.caboo.se/66274 . Tested on both
stable and trunk of aaf and ferret 0.11.4.

attachment_fu content_type problem
Hi all....
Admittedly I''m new to Rails and trying to find my way but I''m having
an issue with uploading documents with attachment_fu.
I have a form where I''m uploading multiple attachments (using AJAX to
add file_filed_tags). That seems to work pretty well. The problem is
I can''t seem to get the content_type to work as I would expect. For
example, if I use

[hivex PATCH] ruby: improve test functions
Use better functions to check for proper values instead of assert:
- refute_nil for non-null functions
- assert_equal for checking equality
Also, make sure that the parameters for assert_equal are correct:
expected value, then got value.

Unit testing + instance variables
After *much* digging and playing around, I finally figured out how to
unit test instance variables that are created by actions. It was
more difficult than I expected. It seems like there should have been
a more straight forward way to do this. Can someone enlighten me? A
simplified and somewhat contrived example of what I am current doing:
Thanks.
