validates_length_of with char field
I am new to ruby/rails and am having a problem with validates_length_of. It seems to work fine on a varchar field, but when I try it on a char field the extra characters are silently truncated and the message appears that the record was successfully updated. How can I get my app to produce my error message instead? I''ve tried various variations, but here''s one of my tries:

update_attributes and save!
I notice that ActiveRecord::Base.update_attributes() calls save(). What if I want to get an exception if the save fails? Is there a way to get the update_attributes() function plus the save! function? Thanks, Wes -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

Hi, IN one of my unit tests I get an ActiveRecord::StaleObjectError: Attempted to update a stale object object.save! in object I have apart from other stuff an after_save method, which calls object.assosication.update_attributes(...) If I remove that line from my code my tests succeeds. Unfortunetly, I do not understand why an update_attributes call can generate an StaleObjectError. Maybe

NameError Exception
Ruby/Rails n00b here so go easy on me... I''ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out what is wrong here. I''ve checked all my models for the appropriate belongs_to, has_many, etc. I''ve checked to make sure I''m using singular and plurals in the right spot. I''ve checked my syntax around all my "within"''s and nothing seems to fix

(2.3.5) removing validations
Today I tried to remove (actually overwrite) a validation from a model, from within a plugin. This was the original validation: validates_length_of :login, :maximum => 30 This was the only code I could come up with to replace it: def self.included(base) base.class_eval do @validate_callbacks.delete_if { |callback| begin # Sorry, only way to remove

update_attributes! does not update nested model
Hi! I have updated my app to rails 2.3. I have form that has few nested models and I am happy that I can just write accepts_nested_attributes_for :tasks, :allow_destroy => true, but update_attributes! does not update my nested model. I have tried update_attributes, and it works. Any ideas? Few lines from log: update_attributes: SQL (0.1ms) BEGIN Education Update (0.3ms) UPDATE

validation null objects and objects with data
I have a model where initially, they we don''t insert an gov_id value because it isn''t known. The field is given a value of "" because it is on the form. I then added code to the ''create'' method to set that value to nil if it is blank which seems to be fine but then it fails this validation (if NULL) validates_length_of :gov_id, :maximum =>
