misbehaviour of some tk windows, R 2.6.0 on SUSE 10.1?
I don't know whether this is specific to (my installation
of) SUSE 10.1, or is more general.
With R 2.6.0, I am finding that some widgets made through
the tcltk package are having problems which become evident
through scrollbar activity. An example is demo(tkfaq) --
see below. To reproduce the problem, I do the following:
after the tk window appears, hold down the

Halo,
Please can you explain why this is advantage over a hardware load balancer.
I fail to see advantage if anything it add in more point of failure, with
several hundred thousand user, we can ill afford to mess around or add to
complexity, sometime keeping it simple is simply way to be, when use
qmail/vpopmail, we never had one failure or problem, ever, we very proud of
this record so our users.

When I read a SPSS *.por file with read.spss everything after a umlaut is
missing:

db name change
Hi all,
Is it possible to do a db name change during the course of the
project and then propagate the effect all across the project?
E.g. I started of doing a sample program with db name as
"tests". As the project evolved I decided to change its name to "biodatas".
" create_table "tests", :force => true do |t|

Making tcp start transfers slow
Hey list
I have almost gotten my shaping setup up and running as planned. The
last barrier seems to be tcp overshooting availible bandwidth when its
starting a transfer, and thereby bursting the line, so ping rises for a
moment. At least this is my best guess at the problem :)
There is a possibility that its just plain old traffic being bursty for
some reason.. I am using bittorrent to test this,

Striped replicated volumes in Gluster 3.3.0
Hi all,
I'm very happy to see the release of 3.3.0. One of the features I was
waiting for are striped replicated volumes. We plan to store KVM
images (from a OpenStack installation) on it.
I read through the docs and found the following phrase: "In this
release, configuration of this volume type is supported only for Map
Reduce workloads."
What does that mean exactly? Hopefully not,

E`<`<rrors in recursive default argument references
Tested in: R version 2.8.1 (2008-12-22) / Windows
Recursive default argument references normally give nice clear errors.
In the first set of examples, you get the error:
Error in ... :

reference or earlier problems?

(function(a = a) c(a) ) ()

Restarting / shutting down a xen0 server
Hi all,
my main xen test system is a pizza box, simply standard.
The kernel of stable debian sarge can shut it down/restart it correctly.
My own xen kernel (based on debians inofficial xen kernel) cannot.
I do not know much of kernels and hardware yet, so please help me to
understand:
Is shutting down (as opposed to writing "power down" to the screen) or
restarting based on APM or

Weird quirk with ingress policing
Hi,
I notice that if two or more existing connections match an ingress
policing filter, the input bandwidth does not get evenly divided up
between the n connections.
Kinda like litters of baby animals, where the stronger babies get more
access to the mothers teats and grow up bigger and faster than their
siblings.
The only workaround that''s working for me is to set explicit ingress

FreeBSD Samba Binary Package
Hi,
The Samba URL http://us3.samba.org/samba/ftp/Binary_Packages/ does not seem
to have a FreeBSD binary package. I tried a web search but to no avail. I
have searched the samba list archives and i could not find any pointers
either. Any assistance would be most welcome
Thanks in Advance,

Is invokeRestart("abort") unstoppable?
Hi,
I'm trying to implement an abort() method that works just like stop()
but does not signal the condition such that try() and tryCatch(...,
condition=...) are, contrary to stop(), effectively non-working with
abort() calls.
In order to achieve this, I stumbled upon invokeRestart("abort"), cf.
help("invokeRestart", package="base") that reads "Restarts are

[PATCH] ptr_ring: add barriers
Users of ptr_ring expect that it's safe to give the
data structure a pointer and have it be available
to consumers, but that actually requires an smb_wmb
or a stronger barrier.
In absence of such barriers and on architectures that reorder writes,
consumer might read an un=initialized value from an skb pointer stored
in the skb array. This was observed causing crashes.
To fix, add memory

I have been trying to compile the earth Multivariate Adaptive
Regression of Splines package as a standalone application under Linux
(x86_64 kernel-2.6.27.21 openSUSE 11.1) with gcc 4.3.2.
The package compiles without problems from within R as an R module and
I get the following linker error:
