link_to - Going Back without knowing the action name.
Hi,
I have a bunch of link_to''s in my code that are simple Back buttons that
should basically just go to the previous request. Is there a way of doing
this without specifying the action to execute? The problem is, sometimes I
may render the same view through separate actions so I wouldn''t know which
action to go back to.
Thanks.

Trying to do a simple thing ...
Hi !
I was talking to a seasider and he asked me if it was easy to do the following
thing using rails :
1) ask a number to the user
2) ask a second number
3) give the addition of the two number and a link to be able to replay
All these things have to be done in one controller and one action, there is no
need for verification and other stuff.
I tried but I''ve got some problems

Redirect back to last page?
I have a few pages where a user may do something (add tags, login, etc)
and I would like to redirect them back to the last page they were at
before calling that action. Is there an easy way to do this?

redirect with application add
There are groups within our app that people can be invited too. If a user
recieves an invite to a group and hasn''t yet added the application the
filter chain ends up redirecting them to the main canvas page instead of the
the group page directly. Is there a way to handle this if the user hasn''t
installed the app, I tried redirect_back_or_default in one of my controllers
but it

session[:return_to] for going back.
Hi,
Is session[:return_to] something Rails maintains to quickly go back to the
previous uri without having to keep track of the action name? Or, do we
have to actually set it in our actions?
Thanks.

Saving and reproducing a POST request.
Hi
I have an action which saves the originating resource from which it
was called, and returns to it later. This is done by setting:
session[:return_to] = request.referer
...
redirect_to(session[:return_to])
Which works great for GET resources. The problem is that POST
variables aren''t kept in request.referer, so this method fails when
the originating resource is a a POST.

Redirect\Cookie bug with MSIE 5.5sp2
Hello all,
There seems to be a bug in internet explorer 5 where a redirect
causes the session to be lost.
A controller says....
def login
case @request.method
when :post
if @session[:user] = User.authenticate(@params
[:user_login], @params[:user_password])
return redirect_to(:action=>''send_confirmation'') unless

"Remembering" link to redirect to after logging in
Hi,
Suppose I have a resource such as http://localhost:3000/topsecret/data
that requires the user to login first.
What I did was make use of before_filter to check and see if the session
variable is set with the logged in user''s id (similar to the example in
"Agile Web Development with Rails").
However while the filtering function does work correctly in redirecting

redirect_to(session[:return_to]) vs session.delete
Hey all,
Recently I''ve been looking into on how to return back to a previous
referring URL and and the most common approach is:
redirect_to session[:return_to]
But some recommend:
redirect_to(session.delete(:return_to) || default)
How I understand it, in the second example we call session.delete so it
will clear the return path since we will no longer need it, and we also use

Can only render or redirect once per action - why?
I ran into this error message a quite a few times since my app requires
branching to different pages from the same action... say using a switch
statement. Ofcourse I found that you can use multiple redirects or renders
if you do
render :action => ''new'' and return false
I hate to code something I don''t understand fully. Any explanation of this

Cancan redirect back at AccessDenied
Hello
I have a rails 3 app and I am trying to implement the redirect back
action at access denied for cancan.
If I try this in my application_controller:
rescue_from CanCan::AccessDenied do |exception|
redirect_to :back
end
It gives the following error:
No HTTP_REFERER was set in the request to this action, so
redirect_to :back could not be called successfully. If this is a test,
