question about software Raid 1
Does software raid 1 compare checksums or otherwise verify that the same
bits are coming from both disks during reads? What I'm interested in,
is whether bit errors that were somehow undetected by the hardware would
be detected by the raid 1 software.
Thanks,

Encrypting tmp swap and home
Hi everyone,
I added a page under the HowTos for Encryption, and then added a guide
for encrypting /tmp /swap and /home using cryptsetup and LUKS keys on
LVM, when you already have partitions setup.

hard drive failing in linux raid
Hello all. I have a server with a linux software raid1 setup between
two drives of the same model....one hard drive as primary ide master
and second hard drive as secondary master. Now primary master hard

Partitions are /dev/md0 till /dev/md5. I think I know what

qemu-kvm package?
I just did a clean net install of CentOS 6.4 and when I run virt-manager it
says that qemu-kvm is missing, but when I try to install it with yum it
says that there isn't a package with that name. Is something wrong with my
configuration? Or what is causing this package to appear as not available?
Thanks,
Dave

Preventing laptop from sleeping when lid closed?
How can I prevent the laptop from sleeping when the lid is closed. I tried
messing with the settings in gnome-power-preferences but that doesn't seem
to prevent it when no one is logged in. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Dave

Good linux software RAID primer advise
Dear Experts,
Could someone recommend good Linux software RAID primer. It would be good
if it has good coverage of monitoring and dealing with failures.
I inherited a couple of boxes with big bunch of software RAIDs each, and I
even may have some problems, but I don't want to bother anybody with
specifics unless I really hit brick wall, not just my own ignorance.
Thanks in advance for all

Problem with mdadm, raid1 and automatically adds any disk to raid
Hi.
CENTOS 7.6.1810, fresh install - use this as a base to create/upgrade new/old machines.
I was trying to setup two disks as a RAID1 array, using these lines
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md0 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb1 /dev/sdc1
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md1 --level=0 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2
mdadm --create --verbose /dev/md2 --level=0 --raid-devices=2

What I want to do is put a new boot drive in load Centos on it.
Then I want to be able to mount the raid without loosing any of the data on
it.
What information do I need from the SUSE OS (raid info etc...) to tell
Centos how to recognize it?
The data is backup on

Help with software raid + LVM on Centos 6
Hi all,
Please excuse the many posts.
Wondering if any one can help me with the the setup.
I have 2x2TBdisks.
I would like to mirror them.
I would like to create two LVMs so that I can snap shot from one to the other.
During Centos 6 install, how would I go about this as its confusing?
So far I am here;
1) Created the following raid devices;
md0 500MB (use it for /boot)
md1 4000MB (use it

software raid - better management advice needed
Hi,
I've used mdadm for years now to manage software raids.
The task of using fdisk to first create partitions on a spare drive
sitting on a shelf (raid 0 were my 1st of 2 drives failed) is kind of
bugging me now.
After using fdisk to create the same partition layout on the new drive
as is on the existing drive and then using mdadm to finish every thing
up is a little tedious.

Best way to compress *many* .spx files
Hi,
I am using a digitized voice with a vocabulary of some 350.000 words.
Converting them from WAV to Speex obviously cut down the size a lot,
but I find that some more compression could be done. Specifically I
collect the resulting files in one big container file, and that one
compresses quite well (from about 600MB to about 130MB). I expect
that is due to redundant data in the headers

Software Raids Questions (I have only ever used hardware?)
Hey List;
I have no experience with software RAIDs; at work we only use hardware
RAIDs and I'm looking to implement, probably a RAID 5 set up at home
for a media server however I have a few questions;
I have three 1TB drives in various places; one is inside a USB caddy,
one is inside my PC and in is inside my existing media centre.
Is it possible to add these three drives to another one to
