rpmforge-release install/rpm problem
I wanted to install the rpmforge-release package on a new install and get
the following. Do others have the same problem?

yum --allow-downgrade and versionlocking not working
with installed version 1.3.7 from rpmforge
yum --allow-downgrade update rrdtool-1.2.30-1.el5.rf
results in "no packages to update"
yum --allow-downgrade install rrdtool-1.2.30-1.el5.rf

So, how am I supposed to use --allow-downgrade then?
I had to rpm -e --nodeps the newer packages to be able to install the
older packages. Now I want to lock the

munin stopped working
Just noticed that my munin installation stopped showing any data after the
last "big" update. I installed a lot of updates for CentoS, but there was
also a munin update coming from rpmforge. However, in yum.log there is no
munin listed. But I'm sure I updated munin to 1.2.5-2.el5.rf as well. Does
yum log only the centos repo's?
The problem seems to be with the creation of

using new sysconfig file
I installed postgrey from rpmforge and wanted to use sysconfig to change
options instead of overwriting the init file. However, I get a weird
warning from postgrey. I'm not sure if this is a postgrey quirk or I use
sysconfig the wrong way.
/etc/sysconfig/postgrey:

yum hangs when Reading Local RPMDB
All of a sudden yum hangs on a Centos 4.5 (updated to the latest patch
before 4.6) when I try to use it. "clean metadata" didn't help.
The output of -d5 shows it gets to the point of "Reading Local RPMDB" and
then sits there. The process doesn't die, but doesn't seem to do anything
from that point on. strace shows this: futex(0xb76dcae8, FUTEX_WAIT, 2,

keeping a mirror of the updates repo
I have a local mirror of CentOS5 base and updates. Now with 5 having
become 5.1 and in case I just want to keep on updating (at the moment) is
it enough that I update the mirror of updates or do I also need an update
of the base repo?

How to generate UUID for Xen?
The new virtual machine manager in Centos 5.1 displays some weird behavior
here and I assume it's because the UUID of one running VM is the same as
of a VM that is shut down. I used the same config file template for
creating all my test VMs, so several have the same UUID. Didn't produce
any problems with xm. But the new VM manager in Gnome shows active and
inactive VMs and identifies

firewall best practice on dom-0
I took over a custom firewall script from my older Suse machines to my
Dom-Us and it works just fine. Doing the same for Dom-0 immediately killed
all traffic for the VMs. As there was no need before I had been dropping
everything on the FORWARD chain. After ACCEPTing all for FORWARD my VMs
are happy again.
What's best practice on Dom-0, what do you do? Can I restrict the
forwarding, in

fail2ban needs shorewall?
I want to try out fail2ban and notice that both, kbs-CentOS-Testing and
ATrpms, have shorewall as a dependency. I do not use shorewall and have
never used it. I have my own iptables/firewall script and am happy with
it. Can I install shorewall without any ill effects to my current sue of
iptables or would I need to use shorewall for firewalling from that point
on? (It may be a good product,

Hi, thanks for the quick answer. We are serving the mp3s with .nsv endings
since that is what the oddcast plugin seems to send by default when mp3 is

php on command line problems
The installed php on CentOS/RHEL is the CGI version. This means I should
be able to get command line arguments with $GLOBALS[''argv''] or
$_SERVER[''argv'']. That''s how the php documentation tells and how it works
f.i. on Suse.
However, on CentOS I get them only when I use the -n switch to php (no
php.ini). The problem with -n is that php cannot find

How can I disable sound?
I usually don't setup any GUI on my Linux systems. Yesterday I installed
with X and Gnome on a spare system for some testing and hit a problem.
Right after login the system freezes. The system froze already earlier
when I opted to test the sound card on the Welcome screen and when I login
with the alternative login choice xterm and shut down it freezes when

what requires lm_sensors?
I found that lm_sensors got installed because of a dependency on my first
Xen VM that I updated to 5.3. lm_sensors doesn't make sense in a VM. I
thought, ok let's check after the update who wants it. However:
rpm -q --whatrequires lm_sensors
no package requires lm_sensors
(same for --triggeredby with lm_sensors or the packages below)
Trying to remove lm_sensors reveals these packages:

sendmail and cups gets installed although not chosen in kickstart file
I setup a kickstart file that contains only @core and several packages
explicitely listed. postfix is listed, sendmail is not. And there's no
package where I would think it needs cups. Nevertheless, after the install
I now have postfix *and* sendmail on the machine and sendmail even being
enabled. And cups is installed.
How can I find out what forced them (and probably many other unwanted

console keymapping problems
Supposedly CentOS 5.1 should fix the problems with foreign keyboards,
but I cannot see any change. The description in
http://misterd77.blogspot.com/2007/11/xen-graphical-console-and-foreign.html
does not work for me. Nothing changes.
Has had anyone better luck? If so, how?

Xen VMs: regular filesystem corruption
It seems that Xen VMs are subject to file system corruption under certain
conditions. I find that often when I reboot or shutdown a VM the
filesystem is corrupted after that and the VM no longer usable. The xm
create then fails with some Python errors and an eventual
Runtime Error: unable to read filesystem
