Fwd: Response from Canon - MultiPASS (KMM7153196V60774L0KM)
My apologies for this because it is, technically, OT, but it is a classic
example of what rotten support Linux (and CentOS) get in the US from
equipment manufacturers. The whole email is a lie because they DO have the
drivers on their asia site, they just don't want us 'Murkins to get our
hands on them. Or maybe it's part of some clever little nuance of their
agreement with Micro$oft

officejet 7310
Has anyone gotten centos 4 to print on an officejet 7310?
I have tried jetdirect with pcl and postcript no go...
I have tried smb but it does seem to be browsable as its not listed
and when I specify I enter the IP address for server and I dont
know what the share is.
Windows XP connects and prints fine.
THanks,

Trying to share HP Officejet 5610 Multi-function
I'm trying to share my HP 5610 on my Samba (3.0.24-1 fc6 x86_64) machine and
am running into a typical HP related SANFU. The XP drivers supplied only
install through the installation program. (ie. I can't use device manager
to point XP to the driver and install it) So I installed the printer on my
XP machine, used the installation program to install the drivers and then
shared the

Problems with building a complete kernel
I have a plain vanilla Centos source (not 100% sure where we got it
from), but I can't seem to get a build that installs correctly.
I tried the method described at
http://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/Custom_Kernel, but rpm doesn't like the
output file, and even if I install it with -F, nothing seems to happen -
no new kernel, now initrd, nothing.
When I tried following the directions in the

Can't print PDFs or PSs in CentOS 5.0
For some reason, when I try to print any graphic PDF (or a PS file made
from said graphic), it kills my Minolta 1100 laser printer, and I have
to cancel the job, disable the printer and turn the printer off and on
as many times as it takes to clear its buffer of the trash.
I'm running CentOS 5.0 and have tried Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 for
Linux; I have also tried printing the pdf to a file

How to use a modem under CentOS
I have a modem in my system that comes up with this in lspci:

What programs under CentOS, if any, can use this modem and how?
Thanks.

Problem with booting/grub (?)
Earlier this evening, I had the interesting experience of shutting down
my machine (because of that lp out-of-sync problem, discussed
elsewhere), and watching it not come back up. I admit that I changed
out one of my DVD writers for another one, but I don't understand how
that could have had any effect on this:
When I restarted the machine, it came up to the point where it normally

Stumped: kernel 2.6.18-8 source doesn't build???
I installed the kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.src.rpm today and went to build
it, but it fails with this error:
$ rpmbuild -bp --target=`uname -m` kernel-2.6.spec
Building target platforms: x86_64
Building for target x86_64
error: Failed build dependencies:
unifdef is needed by kernel-2.6.18-8.el5.x86_64
I double checked and this appears to be the latest kernel source rpm
on centos/5.0/os/SRPMS.

Samba config for Windows on VMWare
I know this is a little off topic (not as usual, dammit!), but I figure
at least one of y'all can handle this one.
I have tried to configure my CentOS4.4 Plus desktop for samba sharing
with the VMWare Windows that runs on it. However, no matter what I've
done so far, I can't get the Windows to recognize this machine as a
legitimate network destination.
Here's my samba

VMWare hiccup on CentOS 5, 2.6.18-8.1.8
For reasons which escape me, my VMWare Server, which was working perfectly a
week ago when I shut down my machine for vacation, no loner comes up with
the formerly working Windows XP system - it just stays in the small window
where it normally boots and does nothing.
The vmware serverd log shows nothing particularly interesting, and I have
reconfigured the vmware twice to try and fix this (which

CentOS 5 and the nvidia driver
Has anyone with an nvidia video card had issues with CentOS 5 so far?
I've been holding off on installing 5 at home because of the trouble
I've been having with my video here at work, but here I have that
lovely ATI card and there I have a geFORCE 7100gs and am, so far,
successfully using the nvidia driver with CentOS 4.4 without
significant problems.
Just wondering....

Need a driver for a Canon MP160 printer
As usual, virtually every printer on the market comes with Windows, and
sometimes Mac OS, drivers for the printers, but they almost never come with
Unix/Linux drivers. This time Google was not my friend. I got a pointer to
a drivr, dommon<something>mp160.ppd that doesn't appear to exist anywhere on
the web, and there are two driver files from Canon Asia that want a lot of

Actually, here is what shows up in the log, regardless of whether the

Problems reading a backup data DVD
I wrote a bunch of files to a backup DVD about two months ago and now
neither of my drives will read it. I get mount errors from "not a
directory" to something like "unrecognized file system type" and so on,
usually after a really long wait and a notice about how the drive is
write-protected (duh).
Here's what happened most recently:
# mount /dev/hdc /mnt
mount: block

OT: Slow browsers or slow connections?
I have AT&T (formerly SBC) DSL for my primary internet connection here, and
tonight it has been exceptionally, extraordinarily S - L - O - W.... Pages
that normally load in, at most, seconds, are taking several minutes to
locate, even common, frequent access pages like Google, Gmail, etc.
I called AT&T, of course, and all they know about is IE, which, as you can
probably guess, I rarely

Problem with 2.6.11.4 kernel and e1000 driver -Correction
1) I'm actually not building a custom kernel per se, just one from the
standard 2.6.11.4 with our configuration. I may be adding a custom
driver, but unless I can get the standard kernel to boot,...
2) I have been told that after 2.6.11.4, support for the Infiniband
driver is dropped, and we need that. If this is not the case, I would
be delighted to know that and proceed accordingly.

Severe VMware slowdown
In the last few days, I have noticed a drastic slowdown in my VMware
Windows guest OS.. I recently bit the bullet and upgraded it from XP
SP1 to SP2, and that seemed to work fine for quite a few days.
The two major changes I made to the system recently were:
1) The most recent update from CentOS (can't remember which one, but
it was within the last two weekd for 5.0).
2) Adding another VM

What's the best way to convert a whole set of file systems?
I am currently running a Windows XP system at home with around 100+ Mb
in use over ~400Mb of NTFS file systems. I am installing CentOS 4.4 on
it when I change out the mobo/cpu/mem/video combo I just bought. I want
to convert all the file systems to (probably) Reiserfs or maybe ext3,
but I need to do them one at a time because I only have enough transfer
space to accommodate the largest one, or

system-display-config doesn't run right
This might be a gnome problem, but....
I've noticed that, on occasion (frequently), when I try to look at or
modify my display configuration, the Applications->System
Settings->Display doesn't come up. It asks for the root password, which
I give it, and then nothing.
I ran system-config-display form the command line, but it dies thus:
