Best cron job method for email notifications?
There are so many ways to do cron jobs in Rails (Backgroundrb, script/ runner, etc.) but I am wondering what would be the best to use in production, just for sending out email/SMS notifications? For example, an email automatically gets sent a day before the due date of a project milestone. Thanks for the help! --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because

Couple questions about backgroundrb
So, what''s the status of this project? I''m a little confused. The documentation at http://backgroundrb.rubyforge.org seems out of date. It refers to http://svn.devjavu.com/backgroundrb/tags/release-0.2.1, which doesn''t work. All I want is a way to easily set up tasks that should run periodically. Some stuff should run every 10 seconds, some stuff once a day, etc.

Forking a process in Rails is messing up mongrel
I''m trying to run an external Ruby script from my Rails app. To do this i''m using this function def fork_with_new_connection(config, my_class = ActiveRecord::Base) pid = fork do begin my_class.establish_connection(config) yield ensure my_class.remove_connection end end Process.detach(pid) end Then, within my controller I do this:

Script/Runner
I have a production site that has a couple of batch jobs, I have used script/runner and cron to run these jobs. This works ok for jobs that only run once overnight during off peak. I am expiring sessions older than 30 mins every 15 mins using script/runner, but I''m concerned about the hit of script/runner loading up the whole rails environment, specifically since I only have a 256MB

Rake task vs script/runner
Hello, until now I allways used script/runner for running Rails cron jobs I wonder is there is any benefit (except not having any fake runner model in the models directory) to use a rake task instead in lib/tasks Thanks -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups

Runner suddenly fails...
I have some jobs running through cron jobs and runner that suddenly starts failing. This is how it looks: from /usr/local/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/rails-2.1.2/lib/commands/runner.rb:47 from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:27:in `gem_original_require'' from /usr/local/lib/ruby/site_ruby/1.8/rubygems/custom_require.rb:27:in `require'' from

alternatives to script/runner?
I''ve been using script/runner to add and delete files from the database in response to inotify events. This works in theory, but is too slow to keep up with a large number of events in succession; I''m suspecting that the bottleneck is that script/runner has a huge startup cost. One thing I thought of was to queue inotify events, and call script/runner once a minute to clear the

SQLite concurrency, SQLite3::BusyException
I am currently experiencing concurrency issues after moving from MySQL to SQLite. My original program worked fined using MySQL but is now returning "SQLite3::BusyException" errors. The same result happens whether or not I enable the allow_concurrency flag. If I do manually acquire a lock on the SQLite DB the problem would disapear, but I thought that rails was supposed to handle this

What to use to do an action every minute?
Hey, I need to have a process running that will do something every minute (check value of some stuff). Is there something in Rails that I can use to do this? -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/. --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Ruby on Rails: Talk" group. Need advice - which version to use?
Greetings! I could use some advice on which version of BackgrounDrb to use in my current situation. I''ve implemented the initial, single-process multi-threaded version in a previous site, but have no experience with the new version. Current situation is as follows. The application involves personal health information and so has very stringent session management requirements. My

Any capistrano email recipes?
I''d like to set up capistrano to send an email whenever we do a deployment. Just start an SMTP session with localhost and shoot off the email. I have all the code to do that actually, I just don''t know how to run some Ruby code on the deployment server. Anyone know how to do that, or do you have an email recipe? render_to_string in a model ?
I have a batch job that will call script/runner, I would like in this call to create html formated email and save it to the database. This is easy enough in a controller with yournewhost.email = render_to_string :action => "email_newhost_ready", :layout => false But render_to_string is only available in controller action pack, is there a easy way to render_to_string in a Model?
