accessing models from migrations
Ok, so now Users need to be associated with Organizations. I''ve
created a migration and added a ''organization_id'' column to the users
table. I want the default organization_id to be the first
Organization. So I have :default => Organization.find(:first). But
it''s complaining about not being able to find the constant
''Organization''.

Getting check_box to default to checked?
I''ve tried this (in a new method/template -- so @type doesn''t actually
exist yet):
check_box ''type'', ''notify_on_create'', {:checked=>''true''}
But :checked seems to get swallowed. I''ve also tried setting
notify_on_create to true in the Type model, but that doesn''t work
either. Any way to get the

Specifying a decimal field precision/scale with scaffold requires 2 steps?
Hi,
It appears to me that the command:
ruby script/generate scaffold whatever money_field:decimal(10,2)
will not generate a valid migration.
Therefore it appears to me only two ways to achieve the desired result
is:
1.1 Omit the the precision/scale on the scaffold command
1.2 Edit the migration file by following the "do |t| ... end" with
the command:
change_column :whatever

migrations unit test and sqlite3 add_column
Hi all,
I submitted a patch the other day for an issue I ran into running an
"add_column" migration on a sqlite3 database when there is existing
data in the table, and the new column has ":null=>false".
Details at http://dev.rubyonrails.org/ticket/5215.
The issue I encountered was not picked due to the unit test not
having any actual data in it before running the

add_column not working in migration for sqlite3
Hello,
I developed an app with postgres DB but want to change the DB to
sqlite3. I changed the database adapter in the database.yml file. When I
run the migration most of it was successful but add_column was throwing
an error
"Cannot add a NOT NULL column with default value NULL: ALTER TABLE
"rates" ADD "customer_id" integer NOT NULL".
I made the modification and

Changing column to NOT NULL with migration silently failing.
Hi
I''ve created a migration called
make_customer_type_id_not_null_for_customers. The migration .rb file
looks like this:
class MakeCustomerTypeIdNotNullForCustomers < ActiveRecord::Migration
def self.up
change_column(:customers, :customer_type_id, :integer, { :null => false })
end
def self.down

rake migrate ignores '':null => false'' on mysql
I wanted to add a login string column to an existing table
=> I created a migration :
...
def self.up
add_column "members", "login" , :string, :null => false
end
...
remark: it shouldn''t work, as the table is not empty (=> ''login'' would
be null in the existing rows.)
problem:
rake migrate didn''t complain

Migrating a Field to External Model
I have a model Product with an attribute ''brand''. Currently it is a
simple attribute, however, I am migrating it to a separate model
Brand so that I can have other attributes with each brand. I created
the the model and created and ran the migration to create the new
table. So far so good. Then I created a separate migration to
transfer the data. The up method

Converting Acts_As_Tree to Acts_As_Nested_Set
Hello,
I have a tree structure that needs to be converted into a nested set.
A great deal of work has already been done on the tree items, so
maintaining the integrity of the id''s is mandatory. However I need
the ability to access entire branches of the tree, which is what
Nested set does. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to
efficiently transfer the tree to the nested set and

[Tip] Introspection to determine if a column may be null
I still want to get this into Rails for all connection adaptors, but
for now I''ve hacked my own addition on for just PostgreSQL.
The following code extends every Column object returned by
MyModel.columns to support a new #required? method, which indicates if
the column may or may not be null.
The following is a huge hack - suggestions on a cleaner way to add this
functionality

DB Migrations & Column Order
Hello,
I created a table and about 10 migrations down the line I decided that
I needed to add an ID column (this was actually a table for a has_many
:through and I recently realized that it needs an ID column, unlike
HABTM tables). I am a big perfectionist and I frequently run "SHOW
COLUMNS IN table;", so I naturally expect to see the "id" column the
first one listed. However,

adding primary_key to join table using migrations
Hi list,
My tag_question_user join table is not currently a full-blown model. It
doesn''t have a primary key - just tag_id, question_id, and user_id.
I now want to add a primary key to this model (because I want to add a
"description" column as well so users can describe the tag.
I''m not sure how to add this using migrations.
Here is what I have:

multiple database in the same actions?
Hi,
I read the example in
http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/pages/HowtoUseMultipleDatabases,
it show us how to connect to other database, each time
we start a new action, however, this doesn''t work
while you try to connect to two different database
within the same action.
SO I wonder is it possible to bind to two or more
database within the same action????
Thanks you very much

Problem with plurals, migrations?
Hi,
Ruby 1.8.4
Rails 1.1.4
Windows XP Pro
I''m hitting an issue with migrations that I suspect relates to
pluralization. Here''s the migration:
class Hardware < ActiveRecord::Migration
def self.up
create_table :hardware do |h|
h.column :vendor, :string, :limit => 32
h.column :model, :string, :limit => 32
