Can't connect to MySQL on another machine
hi everyone
I''ve got two machines here: a Powerbook and a Linux box running MySQL.
The MySQL user privileges seem to be configured properly, e.g. I can
connect to a database using "mysql" from the Powerbook, alter the
tables etc without any problems.
However, I can''t get Rails to connect to the same database. (just a
simple app with one model called "Test"

Unacceptibly slow.
I currently have a fairly simple Rails application running on FreeBSD
under Apache 1.3 and normal CGI, and the performance I''m getting is
alarmingly poor. I realize CGI or WebBrick are quite a bit slower than
FastCGI, and I''ll probably use one of those instead when I have the
time. However, I''m just curious if CGI is really supposed to be that
slow, or if

Could this be caused by the sqlite3 driver?

[OT] building fastcgi
Following the instructions on Hivelogic, everything works flawlessly on my
Powerbook until I do the ''sudo gem install fcgi.
I''m getting no-definition errors all over the place. Any thoughts how to
resolve this?
Example of errors:
No definition for fcgi_s_accept

Development Environment
I want to be able to code my rails apps either on my Desktop mac or
my Powerbook using textmate.
I want to build a Debian server that runs lighttpd, rails and mysql.
Would I use samba on the server and access the files that way through
TextMate or is there something else that folks use? and should I
use subversion and if so, how would I do that in the scanario I''m
describing.

moved from ruby 1.8.6 to 1.8.7 and "We're sorry, but something went wrong."
I''m a windows user, and I was using ruby 1.8.6 installer over at
RubyInstaller.org. All was working well, but I decided to give ruby
1.8.7 a try. I uninstalled 1.8.6, downloaded and installed ruby 1.8.7
from rubyinstaller, reinstalled rails and all of my gems, and copied
over sqlite3.def and sqlite3.dll to the Ruby/bin.
I then my start my server (just using webrick for now, same as

Capistrano not working for me
Hello fellow railers,
I''m new to the whole RoR thing and I have finished installing and setting
everything up on my OSX G4 Powerbook. I followed the step by step
instructions at Hivelogic, running lighttpd and everything else. I''m having

I''m following the tutorial at Apple:

OK, ppc32 EH used to work better than this (although I haven't tried
it on 10.4). I'll have a look.

Memory error
I''m using ruby on rails on a Macbook Pro with sqlite3. I''m finding that
memory for the ruby process stays about 20mb until I hit an error after
which the mermory doesn''t seem to be released and keeps going up until I
can''t use my machine.
What could be causing this? is it using sqlite3? have I set up rails or ruby
wrong?

Make task for rake
I have a dual processor machine and got mad that both processors were
not working away at compiling wxRuby. At first I tried using Ruby
threads but they are ''fake'' software threads that run in one process
on one cpu. So until Ruby gets ''real'' threads I added a task to rake
that generates a makfile which is run with the command: ''make -j 2''

Compiling R for OS X 10.2.6 (Darwin 6.6)
Our lab just picked up a G4 Powerbook (1 GHz, 1GB RAM, OS X 10.2.6). None
of us have any experience with Macs but for various reasons we need to have
one around for development.
In any case, we've installed fink, all the Apple Developer Tools and the
Dec2002updater to gcc 3.3. We're now trying to compile R 1.7.1 without too
much success. First we had to get g77, which turned out to
